11 Quick Observations about the Oscar Nominations

Did you toon into the Oscar nominations this morning. Jack Quaid and Zazie Beetz (in particular) did a fine enthusiastic job of announcing the nominations in Oscar's 23 categories. There were surprises and shut-outs and overperformers as per usual. You can see the complete list of nominations at the Oscar Charts Index Page (though the individual charts per category are not yet updated).

Herewith 11 quick obversations about the nominations before we dive in to individual categories.

1. BARBIE FATIGUE (SORT OF)
While America Ferrera nabbed the Oscar nod we predicted for her in Best Supporting Actress (we went 5/5 on that volatile category in our predictions) Barbie received just 8 nominations overall. That's a lot, of course, but it isn't a lot in terms of expectations and how well the film had been performing at precursors...

The most noticeable shut out -- an unfortunately problematic shut-out given the movies stance on how hard it is to be a woman in a patriarchal society -- was the two women who were most responsible for its phenomenal success: Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig who were left off the Best Actress and Best Director list respectively. Nevertheless they were nominated in other categories (as producer for Best Picture and co-writer for Best Adapted Screenplay, respectively)

2. OPPENHEIMER SWEEP INCOMING
Chris Nolan's atomic biopic nabbed exactly the nominations we expected (all 13 of them which is just one nomination shy of the all time record). In fact the only area Oscar stiffed it in was Best Visual Effects as it didn't make the finalist list in that category so it was no longer possible to receive that nomination. It will surely carry home multiple Oscars in March. It's closest competitors in terms of Oscar hauls are Poor Things (11) and Killers of the Flower Moon (10) which both did phenomenally well but missed a nomination or two they were probably close to getting (a second Supporting Actor nod and a Writing nod, respectively)

3. ANATOMY OF A FALL vs THE ZONE OF INTEREST
This would have made for a fascinating "who ever will win?" nailbiting contest in Best International Feature Film had Anatomy been submitted by France (though it might have been disqualified given the amount of English in the film). Nevertheless they both received 4 big nominations including the important double of Best Picture and Best Director. And Best Director in particular was no easy feat! The Zone of Interest will surely win Best International Feature but can Anatomy of a Fall take home any Oscars?

4. BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE CONTINUES TO SURPRISE!
The Best Documentary Feature category is known for shocking snubs that shouldn't be surprising at all given their history of high profile misses. This year American Symphony and Still: A Michael J Fox Movie had been the top performers in this category during precursor season but they both missed the lineup. We predicted the latter missing -- but it was more a hope-diction as we maintain that you shouldn't be eligible at both the Emmys and the Oscars and somehow that film managed to be! Since it's already won 4 Emmys it shouldn't be too disappointed. We're also proud of ourselves  for predicting To Kill a Tiger (which had not performed well in precursor season) though we're kicking ourselves for booting Bobi Wine at the last minute since it snagged a nomination, too.

5. SWEETEST SURPRISE
Pablo Berger's Robot Dreams is a true gem and we're shocked and overjoyed that it made Best Animated Feature... if only Suzume had also made the list instead of Elemental it would have been a perfect quintet for the category!

6. FINALLY!
Sir Ian McKellen (Gods and Monsters) is finally no longer alone in the dubious statistic of being the only out LGBTQ performer to be nominated for playing a queer role. This year Colman Domingo (Rustin) and Jodie Foster (Nyad) both join him. (Yes, yes, other LGBTQ actors have been nominated over the years but weren't out in the modern sense pre-nomination)

7. SALTY PLUMMET / NAPOLEONIC SURGE
We were expecting Saltburn (given its sudden popularity) to be the rising film that nabbed the most nominations without a corresponding Best Picture citation -- people were definitely talking about it during the voting week. But that annual honor went to Ridley Scott's Napoleon of all pictures which no one seemed to be talking about. We've yet to meet someone who loves Napoleon. Curious result!

Which brings us to a related point...

8. THE INTERNET IS JUST THE INTERNET AND THE OSCARS ARE JUST THE OSCARS.
If you trust the younger-skewing online chatter, Maestro and Saltburn's fates would have reversed positions in this Oscar race. And it might have been, say, All of Us Strangers and not Nyad to score an Acting Double. It's just the annual reminder that the perpetually online community and the Oscar community have different tastes. Sometimes those tastes converge in fun ways (like the Everything Everywhere All At Once situation where the perpetually online loved it for months before the industry got caught up in the fervor) and other times they never come together in the middle.

9. NO LONGER A MISSION IMPOSSIBLE TO SNAG OSCAR NODS
We didn't predict Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 to receive any Oscar nominations even though it had made a shortlist or two. The reasoning was simple. Oscar has never given a single nod to the franchise, despite its immense popularity and very well executed technical achievements. Funny thing is that the latest installment struggled to make the usual bank at the box office and this is the time Oscar picked to honor it. We're happy for the film which has great sound and visual effects but it's quite an about face for the Academy to finally deem it worthy!

10. LONE NOMINEES
Colman Domingo (Rustin) and Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple) received the only nominations for their films. That's increasingly hard to accomplish in the acting categories (or really any craft category, too) in the expanded Best Picture era when only a dozen or so films appear to be widely watched. So congratulations to both of them for beating the odds!

11. PRECURSORS AREN'T EVERYTHING. ESPECIALLY IN THE SPECIALTY FEATURE CATEGORIES
If you predict solely based on precursors you probably had a rough morning in Best Animated Feature, Best International Feature, and Best Documentary Feature. All three categories did not truly play along with what the Globes, the CCA, and many other organizations suggested to them.

P.S.
My own punditry had its usual success rate with a few perfect categories, lots of close call (4/5), and a few embarrassing failures. This year the extremes were:

Proud Achievements: Perfect scores for Picture, Actor, Supporting Actress... and I'm proud of getting Supporting Actor almost right (my only mistake was placing Dafoe above Ruffalo for Poor Things) and my thinking if not my prediction was correct in Adapted Screenplay where I had Killers of the Floower Moon in 5th vulnerable place with The Zone of Interest in 6th as a potential spoiler. Should have gone with the hunch, there! I also had the correct hunch on Original Song (4/5)  that Rustin's would be left out but I chose the wrong replacement as prediction.

Wipeout: Live Action and Animated Shorts (predicting only 2 of 5) and Documentary Short (scoring only 1 of 5 - yikes!). Another reminder that it does not pay to actually see the shorts in question, in terms of punditry! Always glad to have watched them though.

I don't think I ever predicted so many things right. I got 88 out of 120 nominations, or roughly 73% correct guesses across the board. And yet, I feel a bit sad that things were this predictable and that none of my NGNG choices happened save maybe KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON missing screenplay. On the one hand, it's good to know I'm not always horrible at predicting. On the other hand, the thirst for surprise is everlasting so these results can't help but feel a tad disappointing.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterCláudio Alves

I think this means Greta is getting the screenplay Oscar after all, don’t care how competitive the category is. It’ll be an Argo-esque makeup win.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterParanoid Android

Very happy for Poor Things, Anatomy of a Fall, Zone of Interest, Past Lives and May December.

The following nominations made me LOL:

Golda for makeup.
Foster and Benning.
Killers of the Flower Moon for song (the white guilt!)
America Ferrera

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterSad Man

America Ferrera in is so undeserved considering how many great supporting females were snubbed, and especially getting in when Margot and Greta didn’t (for actress and director). Makes literally no sense. Ugh.

If Lily Gladstone had campaigned in supporting she would have won this. I think it’s Emma’s to lose now since KOTF showed weakness in screenplay and actor.

Absolutely gutted by NOTHING for All Of Us Strangers. Also bummed for Saltburn with deserved at least some below the line noms.

I knew they weren’t going to care for The Color Purple.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterNR2

After they announced the first category I knew I was going to be continually disappointed the whole morning. Then I heard America Ferrara and knew nothing would help. Did they even watch All of Us Strangers?!? Or did they only watch Oppenheimer, Barbie, Poor Things and Killers of the Flower Moon? So many movies out there with much better performances that don’t even get a chance - it’s heartbreaking. All of Us Strangers will reside next to Mass - movies with an exceptional quartet of acting performances that just can’t be honored because they don’t make enough money.

This year is just not exciting to me at all. Usually I can find two or three to get excited about, but this year I can’t find any. Sad but true.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterTony L

The Greta snub will age about like Spielberg getting passed over for Jaws.

January 23, 2024 | Registered Commenterjules

I am not too disappointed with any of the snubs because Jodie Foster settled in early with her best notices for years and getting herself out there so she made the list,

I'm sad for my favourite in the category Pike but that performance will endure

Ferrara Get a monologue get an Oscar nod.

I'm shocked Domingo made it as it's hard but glad as it kept out Leo but would have preferred Yoo,Keoghan or Rogowski,

Best Actress is a very good category,Nat's prediction of a bit of comedy snobbery prevailed for Robbie.

I'm not sure Annette deserves it this year but her SAG conversation was very good, she's fascinating to listen to,5th nod 5th time unlucky, the momentum isn't high for a career win.

I knew it would be Jodie/Annette or Julianne/Natalie but not both.

The Color Purple faceplanted outside of Brookes, she must be really on Oprah's level to get the lone nomination.

Best Picture was very easy to predict.

Golda did deserve the make up nod despite any controversy, good work is good work.

They still have their pets Williams and Warren again.

I am most bothered by Supporting Actor I haven't seen Ruffalo/Dafoe but none of my favourites, category fraud or not, made it.

I don't like the song category outside of Flower Moon, basic annoying pop on Barbie and the other is Warren by numbers.

They did like Maestro but not enough for a Coper double nod.

I thought Napoleon was entertaining but suffered in the relationship dymanic though Kirby tries and as usual the film looks wonderful.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterMr Ripley79

What is it with ignoring the craft of Wes Anderson movies unless they're THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL? It makes no sense!

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterWae Mest

The fact that America Ferrera was able to pull through like many predicted (good for her, but a very silly nomination), but Margot and Greta were snubbed hurts.

Barbie is such a directing feat, first and foremost. And truly, Barbie would not work without Margot's performance, which she made look a whole heck of a lot easier than it was. Honoring Barbie without nominating Margot's performance as Barbie feels wrong, I must say.

When they announced Annette Bening's name, I was shocked, and knew we were in for a snub. If they were gonna go for a wildcard pick, I would've preferred Fantasia Barrino or Greta Lee.

I didn't realize how much I loved Margot as Barbie until she was snubbed!

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterPhilip H.

I'm no fan of Barbie beyond it's visuals which are cleverly done but I have to agree Robbie deserves it more this year than Annette if we are assuming she pushed Margot out.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterMr Ripley79

I would have never predicted Bening over Robbie. Not in a thousand years. Keeps you humble.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterPeggy Sue

I definitely thought Bening over Robbie was a strong possibility. They really do like Bening a lot (to nominate but not to win). Maybe it's because I thought about her performance for awhile after watching Nyad and my estimation of it definitely grew. I do think Robbie was deserving as well, competitive category this year.

January 23, 2024 | Registered Commenterwhunk (he/him)

The BAFTA snubbing Andrew Scott means I made my peace a few days ago about him missing out on a nomination this morning, but it still sucks as is the film getting nada. I wonder if it would've made Screenplay if BARBIE didn't switch. Oh, the what ifs.

The Robbie/Gerwig snub in Actress/Director also stings, but as you say, they are nominated elsewhere and honestly the movie did SO WELL both money and industry already that this really is all just icing in the cake. Happy for Ferrera's surprise nom too! Now let's get Gosling that win (haha... imagine!)

Also, not sure why people always forget but Stephanie Hsu identifies as bi and was out as far as I knew before getting Oscar nominated for her queer character in EEAAO.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterRyan T.

"...but can Anatomy of a Fall take home any Oscars?"

I'm thinking Original Screenplay, given that it did surprise at the Golden Globes by winning Best Screenplay, and Barbie has been winning Original Screenplay prizes in other places, so it could be wide open for Anatomy of a Fall to take it. Imagine, ir Barbie and Anatomy of a Fall both win their respective Screenplay Oscars, it will be the year of the married collaborators (which might extend to Oppenheimer winning Director and Picture, since the producer is Nolan's wife Emma Thomas).

I would have preferred Margot Robbie getting her nomination rather than America Ferrera. I recently re-watched Barbie, and while Ferrera kills it in several moments, she's over-compensating for weak writing for her character, and her nomination really feels like validation for some of the worst parts of that film's script (or at least the parts that were most underdeveloped). I found it both funny and sad that in the closed captions for Barbie on Max, they refer to her character as "Sasha's Mom" (I'm not kidding, they never refer to her as Gloria).

On the plus side, this was the Best Picture lineup with the highest number of films directed by women (Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, Past Lives). It may not seem like much, but baby steps.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterRichter Scale

I was bummed but not too surprised by a few of Barbie's snubs and the collapse of The Color Purple's support. I do really love America Ferrera's nod. Some may say it's undeserved but her monologue is going to be long remembered post Oscar race over some of the other snubbed nominees. After the Christmas box office success of TCP, I wonder if Taraji's bad PR about the making of the film hurt the film's chances or maybe audiences really weren't prepared for it to be a musical. Oprah just can't catch a break with films she has a heavy hand in.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterJDM

Admittedly I haven't seen Nyad (and I love la Bening, who should've been nominated AND WON for 20th Century Women), but the Robbie cut hurts.

Triet for Gerwig (ok, maybe it wasn't as crass as that, but it sure reads that way) was not in my book - hat-tip to those who were predicting it.

Very glad Jeffrey Wright got in and Leo did not.

Sad but not surprised All of Us Strangers was blanked.

Surprised but not at all sad that Saltburn was, too.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterLynn Lee

The acting categories are really lackluster.

Who doesn't love Bening and Foster, but that's a lot of real estate for Nyad. Ferrara is a wasted nomination, same with Brown. It seems like wherever there was a question mark they answered it with the least exciting choice.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterDK

THE OSCARS AREN'T REAL, THEY DONT MATTER. I did not care for the Barbie movie, but the Greta/Director snub is outrageous.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterMM

I think these are solid nominations.

I'm very happy for Annette making it in. She gave a great performance of a somewhat unlikeable person, and had great chemistry with Jodie. I had a feeling she'd make it here and was the secret in everywhere, even if everyone was predicting her to be snubbed (see Ana De Armas). Her film was really affecting, even if it wasn't great.

I'm also happy for Colman Domingo and Jeffery Wright. Two great actors who deserve this kind of attention.

I think the biggest snub, for me, is Killers of the Flower Moon missing screenplay. It's such a good adaptation that makes an important point to refocus the narrative on the Osage, and makes that film work. I've been rooting for it all season.

I am surprised by Margot Robbie missing out. Personally, I'd rather see Barbie miss picture and have her in. I'm also miffed about Andrew Haigh missing out on adapted screenplay, though that was far more expected.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterJoe G.

Also, I'm surprised that I like the ring of Academy Award Nominee America Ferrara, even if I don't think she was nearly as deserving as Penelope Cruz, Claire Foy, or Rachel McAdams. At least those other three have been honored throughout the season.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterJoe G.

Love that May December got stiffed by the actors after delivering the most devastating critique of the Acting Industrial Complex since Inland Empire! If the actors had embraced it, I'd be worried it hadn't been nasty enough!

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterMarsha Mason

America Ferrera being nominated is downright bananas.

She has a nice monologue but is absolutely mediocre and irrelevant during the rest of the movie.
You might as well have nominated Michael Cera.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterKyleD

Congrats for the supporting actress prediction Nathaniel. It truly is a fantastic lineup, 4 newcomers and someone who hasn't got a nomination in almost 3 decades.

I'm ecstatic for both Bening and Foster getting in. Never would have expected it. Nyad is a recent watch for me and I loved their chemistry so it's well deserved.

Wasn't really planning to watch the ceremony but having Bening, Mulligan and Stone altogether in one category makes me change my mind (even if I don't care to watch most of the other movies).

The lone nominee trivia in lead categories is interesting this year. Last year we had 2 in actress and 1 in actor, now it's another one in actor, which is rare in itself but now it's a consecutive feat. In comparison 4 out of the 5 actress nominees are also BP nominees and Bening has her co-star in supporting.

I think a lot of winners are either Poor Things or Oppenheimer so the others are going to be more interesting where there is an actual fight.

Costume design is the most fascinating one. Jacqueline West is now 5 nominations with no wins, she is the perennial nominee in this category but she has Dune Part 2 coming up in the next season. Mirojnick finally breaks through and she might win if the Oppenheimer sweep catches her. Holly Waddington is the newbie but if Poor Things sweeps then she can win just as easily.
Janty Yates, a previous winner who couldn't be caught dead to get nominated for nearly 25 years while consistently working with Scott whose work did get Oscar attention sometimes (and she got some nominations at critic and guild awards in the past). And finally, Jacqueline Durran, in comparison she is the one the Academy loves in this lineup, a consistent and regular nominee and two time winner already. Is she going to be the new Sandy Powell with an "I already have two of these" win on name alone? Last year they clearly went for the person instead of the so-called "preferred periods" (Babylon and Elvis lost, Amsterdam not even nominated). No royalty porn or jazz/swing era costumes in the lineup so Durran seems to be the best bet at the moment.

And Ferrari got the cold shoulder, I expected Cruz to get in instead of Foster and I thought Sound was a done deal!

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterElazul

I find myself marveling at the fact that in 1977 Jodie Foster and Robert De Niro were Oscar nominees for their work in the Scorsese masterpiece Taxi Driver. Now a whopping 47 years later the two double Oscar winners are again both nominees. Remarkable. I hope the producers have them present together.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterFinbar McBride

Now that Godzilla has finally been recognized at the Oscars, maybe he can stop showing up to destroy major cities around the world. Rest well, Academy Award nominee-Godzilla.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterRobert G

-Great to see the nominated people nominated for Taxi Driver (Scorsese, DeNiro and Jodie Foster) can be reunited at this year’s show as nominees. Would be greater if this trio presented an award…

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterTOM

Haven't been here in awhile, but I agree with Tony L. Oscar voters, like Emmy voters, do NOT watch movies, or only watch the 5 that everyone is talking about. What is the point of awards anymore when the voting members have never seen more than 20% of the stuff that's eligible?

I guess it mirrors the voting public for US public elections. Uninformed. Sigh.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterPam

Since a couple of people already mentioned the Taxi Driver connection regarding Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster, I guess it's as good a place as any to share what connections I've found among this year's crop of acting nominees (I usually share this in the stat post). This year there are quite a few (maybe a few of you can come up with a few more):

La La Land/Gangster Squad/Crazy Stupid Love: Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling
Drive: Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan
Aloha: Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone
The Kids Are All Right: Annette Bening and Mark Ruffalo
Taxi Driver: Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster
Marvel’s Avengers films: Robert Downey Jr and Mark Ruffalo
The Ides of March: Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti and Jeffrey Wright
Silver Linings Playbook/American Hustle/Joy: Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro
The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Emma Stone and Paul Giamatti
The Hangover, Part II: Bradley Cooper and Paul Giamatti
A Quiet Place, Part II: Emily Blunt and Cillian Murphy

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterRichter Scale

And now people are complaining about the Greta and Margot snubs (which they shouldn't have been nominated - but whatever) so that will overshadow everything else a la Ben Affleck (again - shouldn't have been nominated for Argo so....).

And this whole America Ferrara monologue - she didn't write it!!! So the people that love it nominated the screenplay, nuff said. Shouldn't have been a supporting actress nomination. Why not talk about the snubs because she got in? But no, poor Barbie, blah blah blah.

Shouldn't let it get to me so much, but c'mon

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterTony L

At least I have the Film Bitch Awards to look forward to :)

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterTony L

Carey Mulligan as a three-time Best Actress nominee feels correct, even if I didn't care for Maestro. She was in the "criminally underrecognized" category for a very long time (now the exclusive province of Rosamund Pike) but 0-3 feels right sized for her.

Similarly, I'm glad Margot has been passed over a few times—she'd have like six nominations if she'd been nominated for Barbie, Babylon, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Mary Queen of Scots, way too much for this stage of her career.

Making them work/wait for it isn't the worst thing. She can't expect to produce a movie every other year that gets her an acting nomination (which feels like her career plan), just saying. And I think she's really talented, it's just not about how prolific you are.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterDK

I'm not happy that Greta and Margot got snubbed. I am happy for America Ferrera as believe it or not... I'm distantly related to her. She's related to one of my mom's favorite cousins so I have to root for her. I'm happy that "I'm Just Ken" got nominated and whoever booed that nomination... MOTHERFUCKER... I'M GONNA KICK YOUR FUCKING ASS! It was probably Oliver Stone who is an irrelevant old fuck who hasn't made a watchable film since Any Given Sunday as he's just a whiny liberal cum-bucket who doesn't have anything to say anymore and should just fucking die.

January 23, 2024 | Registered Commenterthevoid99

Happy for America. The actress not the country.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterPeggy Sue

DK - I am sad Margot had to miss a nomination for her best performance to date IMO, but you are right. I also think it helps with public perception if people aren’t nominated every time they’re in contention - Bradley Cooper has no doubt been hurt by the fact that he’s received so many nominations over such a short career. People like underdogs.

I am glad for Ferrera’s nomination. She’s a talented actress who hasn’t had a lot of opportunities - her presence on the campaign trail this season has made me recall the discussions a few years ago that Maria from West Side Story was the only character to win an acting Oscar for a Latina (2x). Meanwhile, Emily Blunt can play the one-dimensional wife of a great man in a biopic and be considered a shoo-in for a nomination. I personally think Blunt is the worst of the 20 acting nominees, but I understand that Blunt’s performance won’t receive the backlash Ferrera’s received, because it was perceived as an “Oscar role” - unfortunately, few of those “Oscar roles” are open to someone of Ferrera’s ethnicity. Remember, they wouldn’t even nominate J.Lo. for Hustlers.

January 23, 2024 | Registered Commenterjules

When actors say they are disappointed about snubs, like Ryan Gosling just did, I really wish they would say who of the five that were nominated should not have been so the ‘snub’ wouldn’t have happened… because that’s what they are essentially saying when speaking of snubs. So come out and say who shouldn’t have been nominated if you’re going to criticize publicly.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterTony L

Your 8th point is one that people really need to remember. As much as I like to cheer for the underdogs, I’m also still very skeptical of the Academy even with the progress they’ve made. I had no faith they would nominate a weird little gay movie like All of Us Strangers. I did hold out hope for a Charles Melton nomination, though.

At this point, maybe it’s a good thing that Todd Haynes doesn’t do well with them, because they clearly want something very different from what he does and I don’t want him to compromise for anyone!

January 23, 2024 | Registered Commenterthefilmjunkie

First of all,

Bening!
Foster!
I believed all the time! ❤️

Extremely fine list of nominees.
Except for some stupid choices, like some omissions - "May December", the Great Julianne Moore, Dominic Sessa, Rosamund Pike, "American Symphony" and "Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie" -, and the inclusions of that boring Ferrerra and that disgusting Ruffalo, it all went so well...

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterFabio Dantas Flappers

Some points,

Paranoid Android,
Gerwig and Baumbach winning for Adapted Screenplay? For a bad screenplay? Over a Masterpiece like Oppenheimer? God help us. I still have some faith in human race.

DK,
I really thing Mulligan deserved her second nomination for Shame. Today should've been her fourth.

NR2,
I agree with you. Gladstone would have it in her bag if she went in supporting. Now, I think Stone or Bening will win in the end and Lily will just show hee new dress at March.

Joe G,
KOTFM losing Adapted Screnplay was a real shock. But not so sad, 'cause they changed everything. The writers branch did like it...

KyleD,
I'd prefer Cera nominated than Ferrera.
It would be a double irony.

Tony L
I don't see parallels between Affleck and Gerwig. He was a serious contender, he won EVERYTHING. He directed the movie of the year - not Life of Pi, not Silver Linings Playbook, not Lincoln, Argo was the movie of 2012. If nominated, Mrs Gerwin would never get the award.

Julie,
Anita (the character) gave two Oscars tili her actresses, Rita Moreno (brilliant) and Ariana DeBose (just ok).

In the end, I think it's was a great list of nominees.

Some considerations.

* What hit me hardly:
Julianne Moore out, probably the best performances of the year.
Rosamund Pike out, it's a performance that will be remembered.
Cooper out for Directing.
American Symphony and Still - A Michael J. Fox Movie snubbed.
Saltburn 's production design out.
And of course the absence of Sarsgaard, Chastain, Bell and Foy - but probably they never had a chance.

* What made me happy:
Oppenheimer leading with 13 nomination.
Bening and Foster deservedly nominated.
"Maestro" gets all it deserves - deserved also director and costume design.
Justine Triet getting all she deserves. Because it should be about real talent, not hype. Same for Hüller performance. Cheers!
Diane Warren again. Yes, and will won her competitive Oscar one day.

What made me sick and nauseous:
Ferrera and Ruffalo. Really. What? She's pathetic, he's disgusting and hammy. Why? Why?

What made me laugh. Really LOL:
Grewig and Robbie out. 'Cause they don't deserve the nomination! Period.

January 23, 2024 | Registered CommenterFabio Dantas Flappers

Tony L., such a good point.

The immaturity is striking, sometimes you forget that Hollywood stars (especially Gosling, a former child actor) haven't spent much time in reality, don't have proper educations, they just don't see the world like rational people do.

"Snub" is also a terrible word because it casts passive omissions as active rejections. Nobody voted *against* Robbie or Gerwig, a critical mass of voters just liked other things better, which is very much allowed!

To put it in perspective, Margot had a billion dollar hit, a $50 million+ payday, nominations for nearly every acting award under the sun, a Best Picture nomination as a producer, the power to greenlight anything she wants...but it's a grave injustice that she didn't get a Best Actress nomination, too. Give me a break.

January 24, 2024 | Registered CommenterDK

Gosling’s statement was very classy. I was glad to see David Muir close ABC Nightly News by reading it approvingly.

January 24, 2024 | Registered Commenterjules

Ugh I’m tired of all the “poor, poor Greta” screeching on the internet. She is not the greatest director of all time. She literally got a nomination this year; she’s fine. Why can’t Gosling use his platform to whine about no black directors being nominated and that no black director has even won…ever! But no, let’s cry about the movie that grossed a billion dollars and got 8 nominations and that it’s still not enough. Jesus.

January 24, 2024 | Registered Commentercharlea

Okay, the outrage for Gerwig/Robbie might be too much, but the outrage TO the outrage is starting to become very tiresome as well. Are we really complaining about how Ryan Gosling, who owes A LOT of his success (and nomination) to the work those two women did, expressed his disappointment at them being excluded? Do please re-read his entire statement -- he never used the word "snub," he didn't say the other nominees weren't deserving. He just wanted to honor both of them and thank them.

Also don't like the subtle downplaying I've been seeing of Gosling and Ferrera's nominations in reaction to Robbie not getting in. Different categories people! Actress was EXTREMELY competitive, more so than the supporting ones. Specifically Robbie was always #4-5 this season while Gosling was #1-2 in their respective categories so yeah.

Finally, I don't know why people are TOO surprise at all the discourse? BARBIE was framed as the movie for the 50% of the world that haven't gotten their due and as hyperbolic as that is, it was actually greeted like it this year, a bonified cultural zeitgest hit. SO many people identified with the movie and many of those people have also never seen the Oscars, so yeah getting all these knee-jerk reactions... makes sense. I'm sure Gerwig and Robbie are fine. Let's all simmer a little.

People need to stop looking for sexism and insults where there are none. Top Gun: Maverick (2022), like Barbie (2023), made more than 1 billion dollars at the box office. Both films scored a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. Tom Cruise was not nominated for Best Actor (Margot Robbie was not nominated for Best Actress). Joseph Kosinski was not nominated for Best Director (Greta Gerwig was not nominated for Best Director). Lastly, Top Gun: Maverick is a better movie than Barbie, I say that as someone who doesn't much like Tom Cruise and action movies.

Oh, and... Barbie is on the level of Jaws? People aren't taking their pills.

Yavor, exactly.
I think the same way.
It's obvious.
And "Top Gun: Maverick" is so much better than "Barbie".
People really aren't taking their pills.
