Interview: Eliza Hittman on 'Never Rarely Sometimes Always'

The first great movie of 2020 has arrived. Visceral, exquisite and artfully rigorous Eliza Hittman’s Never Rarely Sometimes Always drops the audience into the experience of two teenage girls in rural Pennsylvania. Faced with an unintended pregnancy and a lack of local support, Autumn (Sidney Flanigan) and her cousin Skylar (Talia Ryder) embark across state lines to New York City on a fraught journey trying to secure an abortion. The performances from newcomers Flanignan and Ryder are stunning in their simplicity and authenticity and Hittman reaches new heights with her assured filmmaking no matter what you thought of her previous films, Beach Rats (2017) and It Felt Like Love (2013). The movie won raves at this year's Sundance and won the Grand Jury Prize, or 2nd place, at the Berlinale last month.

We recently met with Hittman in New York. [This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.] 

Murtada Elfadl: Congratulations on the film. I saw it at Sundance. I really loved it. It's great.I wanted to ask you first about working with the actors. I hear Sidney Flanagan has never acted before and Talia Ryder has maybe done a couple of things,

Eliza Hittman: Stage. She's done musical theater.

They are amazing. I was flabbergasted by these performances. I read about your casting process, but can you talk about working with them on set, how did you manage to get these performances out of them?

Exclusive Clip: Swallow

Out this Friday is Swallow, a psychological thriller about a woman unraveling ie The Film Experience’s favorite genre. Haley Bennett stars as Hunter, a newly pregnant housewife leading a seemingly perfect life who cracks under pressure to meet her controlling in-laws and husband’s rigid expectations. Austin Stowell co-stars as the husband. Bennett won best actress in the US Narrative competition at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival and this could mark a major breakout for her after roles in The Girl on the Train (2016) and The Red Sea Diving Resort (2019).

We are debuting an exclusive clip from Swallow and to set it up here’s writer and director Carlo Mirabella-Davis:

One of the core visual themes of SWALLOW is the image of a cracking façade; a veneer of normalcy with a fracture slowly forming on its surface. We used this image as a central motif in the camera direction and the production design. Thematically, this façade represents the world of white, patriarchal power and “success” that we are all taught to idealize as the apex of the American Dream. SWALLOW is a quasi-satirical critique of the top one percent and its malignant, patriarchal norms that are propagated throughout our government, corporations, society, and media. Hunter, our main character, has married into this masculine world of power and success, but because of her gender and working-class background, there’s something about this gilded cage that doesn’t sit right with her. She represses this disquiet under a plaintive smile until it threatens to undo her.

 

Swallow will be in select theaters and on demand this Friday March 6th.

Interview: Zora Howard on 'Premature' and having a Cultural Moment

Zora Howard is having a moment. Premature, a film she co-wrote and stars in, is out today.  At the same time Stew, a play she wrote but doesn’t star in, is playing Off Broadway. The two works are different but announce the emergence of a perceptive writer and a sensitive actor. Premature is a Harlem-based love story, the kind of languid gorgeous storytelling you want to cozy up with. While Stew is more confrontational and heartbreaking, both works are steeped in Howard’s memory and experiences. 

Premature is directed by Rashaad Ernesto Green who co-wrote with Howard, and tells the story of 17 year old poet Ayanna (Howard) and her passionate summer romance with a charming music producer Isaiah (Joshua Boone). The film announces Howard as an actor to watch, we said as much when we saw it at last year’s Sundance. We recently met with Howard in New York and started our conversation with her double moment on film and stage. [This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.]...

"Farewell Amor"

... one last Sundance review from Murtada Elfadl 

Early on in Farewell Amor, Angolan immigrant Walter (Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine) sits down to eat with his wife Esther (Zainab Jah) and teenage daughter Sylvia (Jayme Lawson), they talk about all the years they spent apart. Walter moved to New York to escape the Civil War and was hoping to bring over Esther and Sylvia, yet they were stuck in Tanzania for seventeen years. That's a long time to be apart; Are they still a family or just three strangers trying to avoid the awkwardness of small talk?

It’s a moment of fraught emotions and stilted silence. Yet as Mwine, Jah and Lawson play it, it is also a moment of guarded release. The wait is over, there’s awkwardness, doubt and trepidation but also hope...

The French Dispatch, Wes Anderson's latest

Wes Anderson’s new movie, The French Dispatch, is about a fictional weekly magazine that was inspired by The New Yorker. That’s big news for this writer who got their subscription while still a teenager, and used to look at the “goings on about town” and imagine living in New York, while being so far away in Khartoum.
