Adrian, God of Glamour

by Cláudio Alves

Born Adrian Adolph Greenberg, the designer best known as Adrian was one of the most influential costumers in Hollywood history. After working in his family business of millinery, Adrian went on to study costume design in New York and Paris and later found work dressing the starlets of Broadway. His talents soon took him to Hollywood, where he found a home from the mid-1920s to the 1940s, designing the costumes for many an MGM classic. Throughout his tenure in Tinsel Town, Adrian perfected the on and offscreen looks of such great divas as Greta Garbo, Norma Shearer, Myrna Loy, Jean Harlow, Vivien Leigh, Ingrid Bergman, Lana Turner, Judy Garland, Hedy Lamarr, and others. Among them, his most essential collaborator and muse was the one and only Joan Crawford…

All hail The Prince of Darkness!

by Cláudio Alves

In the annals of American film history, you'll have difficulty finding a filmmaker as influential as Gordon Willis. He's one of the best cinematographers that's ever lived, a man who almost single-handedly invented the look we most quickly associate with the great cinema of the 70s. Low-lit and underexposed, his pictures were rich in shadow play and gloomy frames, a materialization of the decades' paranoia and moral ambiguities. Kurosawa was, in his own words, "transfixed" and the rest -- 16 films of a classic collaboration -- is history. For our Mifune Centennial celebration thus far we've covered Stray Dog, The Hidden Fortress, and Yojimbo but herewith a beauty break to bask in the photographic glory of this iconic masculine star...

Beauty Break: Breakthrough Performers of the Year

by Nathaniel R

Getting to the fun stuff now in the Film Bitch Awards. New categories are up including Best Juvenile Performances (which gives us the chance to rave about the best working child actor in Hollywood again -- that'd be Noah Jupe), Best Casting (the only time you'll hear Nathaniel praise Uncut Gems), and Best Ensemble acting. Also on that awards page are the nominees for Breakthrough Perfomer of the Year including both of stars of Waves, Taylor Russell and Kelvin Harrison Jr. The basic criteria of that category is that it has to be early in their film career and we ask ourselves the question: how badly do we want to see them again in something else?

After the jump beautiful photographs of this year's nominees as well as a history of who came before them this past decade...

Oscar's International Race Pt 5 - The Eye Candy

by Nathaniel R

Now that we've covered female directors, returning auteurs, trivia, and half of the trailers, and updated all the charts, let's do something lighter... and sexier... before we wrap up with the rest of the movie trailers.

We've selected 9 hunks for you to gawk at from the 93 films submitted. In the comments we trust that you'll let us know whose, uh, native tongue you'd most like to learn.

For educational purposes.

After the jump, beautiful men from Argentina, Norway, Pakistan, Thailand, and more...
