A bit late on the quickie box office chart this week but for a good reason. The race for #1 was so tight between three films that it took til Monday to clear it up with the Kingsman sequel topping and the new Tom Cruise actioner American Made on bottom....

Kingsman: The Golden Circle got off to a fast start with its all star cast and Looney Tunes broad violence (only I guess people die unlike Wile E. Coyote) while It continues to power on determined to be the biggest horror hit of all time right now trailing only The Sixth Sense (if you don't adjust for inflation) and that and The Exorcist (if you adjust for inflation).

Meanwhile since Fall has officially begun, so too has the Oscar-hopeful release cycle (FINALLY). All four of them that opened this weekend are off to great starts...

As you've probably heard box office for 2017 is way down, the lowest in several years overall. I've read numerous reports blaming this on Hollywood's overreliance on event movies and franchises and the like but here's a depressing theory: I don't actually think that's the problem...

"I'm Your #1 Fan..."

IT defied already optimistic expectations last weekend, opening to mostly postive reviews and a staggering box office of $123m. Hot takes are afoot as to why IT is such a mega hit, compared to the flopzilla of The Dark Tower. And amongst the good reviews was the adulation of one particular enfant terrible...

Did you succumb to the scares or were you not amused by the clown? Discuss.

numbers from box office mojo

This was the worst Labor Day weekend for the movie business in nearly two decades! Marvel's Inhumans, a tv series launched in movie theaters, didn't even excite people much. I went to a lakehouse with friends to enjoy the last bit of sun and water but we did rewatch Moana with friends' kids though.

If you did get to the movies, which ones? If you saw Do it Like an Hombre, please report: was it as dated and homophobic-despite-being-about-how-homophobia-is-stupid as it looked? If you didn't, which films have you been thinking about? I have to admit that Wind River has been rustling around in my mind quite a bit after seeing it so I'm glad it's holding steady with audiences.
