Meet the Parents

I'm can't really do a TFE-patented "Yes No Maybe So" for the just-dropped trailer for Mass -- writer-director Fran Kranz's Sundance smash that gives four great roles to the character actors Ann Dowd, Reed Birney, Jason Isaacs, and Martha f'ing Plimpton, playing the parents of two children involved in a school shooting -- because the trailer is mostly critical hosannas from Sundance, with maybe ten seconds of actual and intense footage from the intense film slammed down at the end, a bit like a punch in the gut. What am I gonna say, "Yes to that Variety quote but I'm iffy on the one from the Post?"

Anyway I already saw the movie at Sundance and it should be a yes for all of you, just trust me. All four actors have made it clear they're aiming for Supporting nominations Oscars-wise, and I wouldn't be surprised to see all of them make it. I'm rooting for all of them! The film hits NYC & LA on October 8th and rolls on out after that. Here's that trailer...

Sundance: Discussing Grief in “Mass”

 It’s always interesting to see actors step behind the camera to direct, both for the subject matters they choose and the times they decide not to cast themselves in their projects. I was particularly moved by William H. Macy’s debut in that role with Rudderless, which played at Sundance in 2014 but didn’t go very far after that. It dealt with a father struggling to connect with his late son through his music after a school shooting. Now, Fran Kranz, who I always remember as Topher on Dollhouse, is exploring a similar concept as writer and director of Mass.

The film opens with church staff members setting up a room for an awkward meeting set to occur between two sets of parents...

The Only Thing You Have To Fear Is 

Team Experience from the Tribeca Film Festival - here's Jason on "Rebirth" and "Fear Inc."

It's weird that I brought up the 2006 film Severance last week when reviewing director Christopher Smiths' latest, because as soon as I sat down to watch Rebirth, writer-director Karl Mueller's new film about a suburban office drone sucked into a nightmare spiritual retreat, Severance was on my mind once again. Rebirth is never half as nasty as that film but the dots are there to be connected. This, too, is a satire most black about the search for that something greater than the proverbial pushing of pencils.

Kyle (Fran Kranz, Whedonite staple) starts the movie with a life that's tossed off in one of those meaningfully repetitive montages straight out of Fight Club. You know the type: coffee, car, cubicle, coffee, car, cubicle, and on and on to a not-early-enough grave...

I'm Mad As Hell And I'm Not Going to Link It Anymore

CHUD James Franco to direct a film based on the making of bad movie everyone obsesses over which I haven't seen The Room. You guys, I can't even with Franco's lack of focus. I mean I don't dislike him. I think he's interesting but he is way too scattered.

We're hearing from Coming Soon that John Travolta will be playing Gummy Bear, or Gummibear if you prefer or are European, in an upcoming animated film version of the yummy treat. The character designs look hateful, really and not much like the actual food stuff.

Frankly, I don't see the point in a Gummy Bear movie when the deliciousness was already twice immortalized via Robot Chicken and Hedwig and the Angry Inch...
