Red Carpet Lineup: Best of the BAFTAs & the CCAs

Lady Gaga, Juliette Lewis, and Alana Haim all looking very glam over the weekend

Last night the stars had to choose between the BAFTAs and the Critics Choice Awards but the nominations did some of the choosing for them. For the Hollywood stars that were nominated in both locals, the choice was easy: BAFTA across the pond! When it comes to fashion, beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder so I can't begin to pretend that you'll agree with these selections as "best" or the roughly ascending order.  But consider this weekend's ceremonies a warm-up to Oscar fashions. Apologies to Jada Pinkett Smith and Melanie Lynskey -- couldn't find full length images but they looked elevated in their style but also exactly like themselves which is often the perfect choice for a  glamourous night out.

"Enola Holmes"

It's been a while since a Netflix film prompted me to write in my cinephile What's App group chat: "ok everybody, I have a fun movie to suggest." After the boring disappointments of The Devil All the Time and Project Power, after the unspeakable horrors I witnessed in The Last Days of American Crime, I confess I log in my Netflix account holding my breath. Enola Holmes brought a sigh of relief. Nothing life-changing, mind you, just a fun, entertaining movie that reimagines the canon of Sherlock Holmes, the classic of classics. Conan Doyle's detective is one of the few fictional characters who keeps getting adapted in fresh ways without ever wearing out his welcome. 

Giving Mycroft and Sherlock a little sister is not entirely new...

26th Annual SAG Awards

It's SAG night. Let's jump right in...

Christina Applegate got here SAG card in the 70s on an indie film. She doesn't remember what it was (yeah, right) but everyone was "really really high". Cynthia Erivo played a shepherd -- "Everyone lauded my performance." she was hooked at five years old. Eugene Levy dreamed of being the next Mr Whipple but goes on and on in a funny bit. They are actors! (We always love that corny intro.)

Levy and (hot/gay) Son present Male Actor, Comedy Series for which, inexplicably, neither of them is nominatd. The statue goes to awards magnet Tony Shalhoub in Marvelous Mrs Maisel

Who will win the Emmy for Supporting Actress in a Drama?

Emmy voting is currently underway (ballots are due on the 27th), so it’s time to start digging into some of the more exciting categories this year has to offer. The Supporting Actress in a Drama field is always tricky to navigate – we hope for inspired wins, but end up with repeat winners, such as Anna Gunn for Breaking Bad or Maggie Smith for Downton Abbey. 

That’s why it is exhilarating when an unexpected name is called on Emmy night, for instance: Archie Panjabi on The Good Wife or Ann Dowd last year for The Handmaid’s Tale. This year, Dowd is back. Will she repeat or will someone else be victorious?
