While Oscar nomination morning (this past Tuesday) brought its share of happiness -- which we'll get to soon. It also brings small shockwaves (never large, really) at unexpected nominations and sadness in the form of beloved favourites missing from the "Best" conversation, however unthinkable that may be in the moment. So we polled Team Experience asking them for their saddest snub* and nominations that had them reeling for various reasons.

Ridley Scott vs. History

With Napoleon in theaters, Ridley Scott's on a rampage – or what most people call it, a press tour. The 85-year-old director is out of fucks to give, throwing shade at historians left and right, not to mention the entire population of France. If the French can't like themselves, how in the hell are they gonna like Scott's latest movie? Ruisms aside, the filmmaker's wrath has been primarily directed at those who dare come to his cinema expecting a modicum of historical accuracy. Simply put, that's not where Sir Ridley's interests lie, as he's fond of reminding his critics.

But then, why does he keep throwing himself at historical narratives? The conundrum got me thinking about his vast and vastly inconsistent filmography…

Best Costume Design is all about Big Hats

It's always interesting to find links between otherwise disconnected pictures, whether in the context of a film festival or just the calendar year. Sometimes, the awards season can suggest interesting threads uniting films by virtue of competition-born comparison. Note that one need not be very intellectual about this, and it's always good to have some fun about the race. This year, for example, I couldn't help but notice how three of our likely nomination leaders are bedecked in exuberant millinery, with Killers of the Flower Moon taking the cake as 2023's best hat movie. Or, at the very least, 2023's most hats movie.

And, as we all know, when it comes to the Academy, "most" often trumps "best." Not that Jacqueline West is locked to win Best Costume Design for the Scorsese movie. After all, even in hat terms alone, there's stiff competition from Barbie and Oppenheimer…
