Podcast: Jane Eyre

New season of the podcast starts now. Though Oscar season is still many months away the Big O (and I don't mean Oprah) is not required for hearty movie conversations. Even if he likes to muscle his golden way in from time to time. In this week's episode Nick and Katey and I have gathered to talk about the dreaminess of Michael Fassbender, the skill of Mia Wasikowska, the promise of Cary Fukunaga and drafty manor houses on the moors filled with dark secrets.

For those who haven't yet read the book or seen the movie we pull back from the spoilers so fear not. But go see the movie! All three of us were fans of this particular adaptation. Also discussed, however briefly: Rango, Certified Copy and Andrea Arnold's forthcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights. It's a big year for those Brontë girls.

Podcast: The Elephant in the Room

For this final podcast of the 83rd Oscar season, we've misplaced Katey. Oops? Where she go? But Nick, Joe and myself (Nathaniel) are back to close out the season.

We had fun chiming in weekly and after a  break will be back with Off-Season cinematic musings.  While we normally have quite a laugh during these, and there's a fair bit of that againe, we do get a bit serious on a couple of topics. "The End" always brings a smidge more sober take-it-all in perspective.

Topics covered include:

  • Kirk Douglas & Melissa Leo. The early peak.
  • Dressing like a winner / Dressing like a nominee
  • Cate Blanchett, Sharon Stone and other fancy dressers
  • Nobody ever likes the hosts of the Oscar show. But Anne Hathaway & James Franco?
  • Ovearching themes and production confusion: Old or Young?
  • Why no visual gags for non-comedian hosts?
  • Colin Firth, Christian Bale and Natalie Portman speeches
  • Awards Fatigue (and strategies for coping)
  • Next?

Podcast: Return Engagements, 2010 Memories

It's part 2 of the last pre-Oscar podcast. Nick, Nathaniel, Katey and Joe complete their role swap conversation. Other features include.

  • "Range" does Jesse Eisenberg have it?
  • Melissa Leo's filmography
  • Sofia Coppola, John Cameron Mitchell, Nicole Holofcener
  • Matt Reeves and other directors to watch
  • What directors learn from success or failure
  • Mark Harris' GQ piece on Inception's box office
  • Tilda & Luca
  • Christian Bale and Oscar nominees in superhero films
  • Statistics about 2nd nominations
  • When does Amy Adams become "overdue"?

Join in the conversations in the comments. Which young directors will one day be occupying the Aronofsky/Fincher spots of "finally breaking through" with Oscar? Which of this year's newbies will come back for second nominations?

Podcast: Sexy Interlopers. Oscar Role Play

New Podcast!
The gangs all here. Nathaniel, Nick, Katey and Joe were too full of the Awards Season spirit to squeeze into the alloted time so this one comes to you in two parts (part two tomorrow). We're bursting with chatter about the nominated actors in particular and the post BAFTAs King's Speech climate. So we decided to play The Film Experience's favorite hypothetical award season game: Which nominated roles do you think would have been interesting or totally different with the another nominated actors playing them? But that's not all...

Topics covered include

  • Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell in The Eagle
  • Queens of (Reaction Shot) Shade: Miranda Richardson and Anjelica Huston
  • Nicole Kidman at the Grammys
  • David Fincher "behind enemy lines"
  • Aronofsky's homage to Natalie Portman
  • Supporting Actress free for all. Who to predict?
  • Role Play Switcheroos. Which actors would be most interesting in each other's roles? Helena Bonham Carter gets quite a vocal/psychological workout and Mark Ruffalo's Sexy Interloper in The Kids Are All Right finds plentiful sperm-donor competition.

Recent articles briefly cited: Nick's Annette Bening piece, Nathaniel's review of The Eagle, Joe's 1990 Oscar retrospective.

LISTEN IN. We'd love to hear your comments. Especially about the annual Film Experience Oscar game. Switch the roles around. What'cha got?

Podcast: Oscar Switches, Summer Dreams

See?

We are trying to get weekly. We recorded the new podcast early this week (included at the end of this post) as today I knew I would be all wrapped up in a wedding. Well, attending one that is. But you know how time consuming they are. It was a lovely snowy Connecticut wedding and I'm just back. So here is the new podcast. There's a bit of a lull in Oscar happenings as we wait for the big night, so this week, Joe and Katey and I go a little more Off-Gold than usual.

Topics include:

  • Chris Nolan (Inception and a brief Memento cameo)
  • The Jesse Eisenberg Show
  • Spirit Award Best Actress ballot. Could there be a Natalie Portman upset?
  • The success of the Best Picture field at the box office
  • Our individual least favorite Best Picture nominees (surprising results!)
  • Toy Story 3. Is it a great movie or just a great 15 year narrative?
  • Oscar Narratives. Reading purpose.
  • Super 8 and Superbowl trailers
  • Crushing on Michael Fassbender
  • Nostalgia for Harrison Ford
  • Reese Witherspoon: "Think about your choices, lady!"
  • Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher
