Erotic Thrillers: Part 4 – Naughty Nineties

by Cláudio Alves

THE COMFORT OF STRANGERS (1990) Paul Schrader

The last time we checked on the Criterion Channel's Erotic Thrillers collection, it was to consider the voyeuristic properties of late-80s cinema. Moving on to the next decade, let's get over the nineties in one go. During this era, the erotic thriller reached its apotheosis of influence and trashiness, gradually fading into obsolescence as the millennium approached. It was an epoch of Fatal Attraction copycats and prestige-infused sensuality, a final resurgence of neo-noir aspirations, the rise and fall of Joe Eszterhas, Sharon Stone's stardom, and direct-to-video sleaze. Criterion traces these arcs through eleven titles, spotlighting great cinema and irredeemable garbage with the same gusto…

Was 1958 the all time greatest vintage for iconic women?

by Nathaniel R

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MADGE ❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️
-Sharon Stone

Today is Madonna's birthday which we celebrated over at our official Instagram account (are you following yet? Plz do!) and on Twitter. She's 64 today having been born on this day in 1958 in Michigan. Angela Bassett shares her exact birthday. It got us to thinking about what an incredible vintage 1958 was for women who became inarguable legends in their fields. Then, when Sharon Stone, who is also a '58 baby, shared the pic above we knew we had to discuss this nonscientific observation with you.

1958 is the greatest vintage for producing iconic women. Proof is after the jump...

Would you rather?

A game to excuse the hours we waste looking at celebrity instagrams. So... Would you rather?

• enjoy the ocean beside Julianne Moore?
• explore Lee Pace's cave?
• go barefoot on the streets of Paris w/ Janelle Monae?
• have a self-care day a la Millie Bobby Brown?
• play on a rug w/ Ranveer Singh?
• join Daryl Hannah in her bubble bath?
• watch Sharon Stone paint?
• make popcorn w/ Kevin Bacon?
• have a cup of coffee w/ Michelle Pfeiffer?
• flip and tumble like Nope's Brandon Perea?

Pictures are after the jump to help you decide.

Cannes Gown Round 9: Red & Black Song

It's a DOUBLE-SIZED poll tonight/this morning (depending on when you're seeing this) since the stars have been out out en masse for various premieres. One question begs to be asked: Do stylists and designers all have meetings cross-clients to decide on the trends for each major festival...not just general trends but day-to-day shifts. If not why is it all of a sudden blacks and reds? Earlier in the festival metallic gowns and pink were all the rage. The fashion hive-mind has such mood swings!

You know what to do!

You can still vote on the earlier polls. Vote again if you'd like.

Cannes Gowns, Round 8

Previous Cannes 2022 Fashion Polls: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7

Cannes closing ceremony hits this weekend and so many stars have already been strutting to the premieres and parties that we have to wonder who will stick around to the bitter end? Or, more excitingly, who might be called back to town for the closing ceremony. They don't tell people what they're winning, from what we've heard, but they do supposedly contact some filmmakers people to suggest that the team should be in town if you catch the drift. But we're getting ahead of ourselves. That's this weekend. In today's roundup, Sharon Stone, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Crimes of the Future's Kristen Stewart, and Zar Amir Ebrahimi who is the star of Ali Abassi's buzzy serial killer film Holy Spider. It's based on a true story though her reporter/protagonist role is an invention.
