Fun Factoid: With an average age of 62, this is the most senior list year ever in this category, even though it generally skews the oldest of the acting categories. Not even that George Burns year in the 70s skewed this vintage. Max von Sydow and Plummer are now the 2nd and 4th oldest nominees ever in this category (Hal Holbrook from Into the Wild is the oldest still... but now by only 50 days! In third place was Ralph Richardson for Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan Lord of the Apes though that nomination came posthumously)

Albert Brooks wins the Dennis Quaid in Far From Heaven prize of enduring showbiz player with critics wins playing against type in a movie that's in love with the movies who seems obvious and then gets snubbed at the last minute prize WHEW. This race seemed really diffuse beyond Christopher Plummer and Kenneth Branagh since Nolte's film didn't have heat, Hill seemed like an easy snub if they didn't love Moneyball as much we expected so several men still seemed possible like SAG nominee Armie Hammer, Globe nominee Viggo Mortensen and men in Best Pictures like Ben Kingsley.
