Happy Australia Day, Jacki Weaver

I didn't realize it was your special day and making it doubly special, Jacki Weaver got nominated as Best Supporting Actress for her incredible work in Animal Kingdom! I had a wonderful time interviewing her a couple of weeks ago.
Here's what she said about this morning's nomination (courtesy of Variety).
"I'm elated to the point of euphoria. I feel like I'm in a walking dream. I'm so relieved that all those millions of Australians who wanted me to get this nomination aren't disappointed. Happy Australia Day."
Other Australians getting happy news on the national day were Geoffrey Rush (The King's Speech), Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole) and the team behind Animated Short nominee The Lost Things.

We do indeed firmly claim Nicole Kidman as Australian.
Glad others have pointed out Nicole Kidman. If we want to be particularly patriotic, we can claim Tom Hooper to some degree as well. He has an Australian mother and lived here for some time.
Correction: Tom Hooper doesn't seem to have lived here, but he's still got the Australian parent.

Such a gracious Australian, talking of which does anyone know when Australian Liam McIntyres (new Spartacus) thriller film Frozen Moments hits the theather? This seems to have some hype around it so I'm looking forward to seeing it. I believe it was shot in San Francisco and Australia.

While a lot of Americans made it, my fellow Minnesotan John Hawkes has to be the toast of my morning. I remember when he was doing community plays near my Midwestern Minnesota hometown, and getting to meet him afterwards. For New Yorkers, you get to see tons of movie stars before they become stars due to Broadway and off-Broadway. It's not nearly as often to see a future Oscar nominee in a town with 5000 people, so I've been ear-to-ear all day. Go John!!!
I'm from Venezuela and we (like always) lucked out.. some people had their hopes high because Hermano (the submitted film) was actually one of the best in recent history but alas...

Yeah, but I'm not so proud that Biutiful got nominated... And what's worse was when my mother asked me if I have seen it and I said that I didn't like it and she replied "But you like Almodóvar movies, don't you?" and I was like OMG! hahaha
Correction to the correction: Tom Hooper carries an Australian and an English passport and has a home in South Australia. So, after much deliberation I think we can claim Hooper as one of ours.
And Geoffrey Rush, too, eh? So many Aussies this year.

"How to Train Your Dragon" is directed by a Canadian, so that is a plus. "Barney's Version" also got a nod. But "Incendies" is the icing on the cake. By the way, Felix, I have seen "Hermano". And though I hate to be negative, I must say that that (film?) was one of the most inept, cliched, badly acted, and just all-around-awful films that I have witnessed since Cuba's laughable submission ("Fallen Gods"), last year. It's embarrassing when countries offer up movies that are much lesser than an after school special, or an episode of some craptastic made-for-the-web series, where some ridiculous and pretentious themes of testosterone and idiocy flourish.
I get you, Felix. I live in Chile and the closest we've gotten to the race was last year with the Maid, which wasn't even the submitted film. But I was born in Argentina, so I was happy with last year's outcome :)
Congratulations to Aussie Ben Snow for his fourth Special Effects nomination! Ben used to be a projectionist at our local university Film Group.
I LOVE Jacki Weaver. She makes me proud to be an Australian Oscar blogger. haha.
At least one of the "King's Speech" producers is Australian (it's co-produced by an Australian company), the editor of "The Social Network" is Australian as is someone within the FX team of "Iron Man 2". So a whole swag of Aussies got in!
But, of course, the Weaver nomination is the one I'm happiest for. Didn't I predict this in March?
Haha, we have a way of making a claim on anyone who has any kind of slight connection to the country...it's kind of annoying really, but anyway. I was proudly telling me non-film mad friends at our usual BBQ about Jacki Weavers nomination. I think I'll have to force them to watch Animal Kingdom now!

Anywho, my Danish countrymen received two noms. In a Better World for best foreign language film and sound mixer Martin Jensen was nominated for The King's Speech.

Biutiful was shot in Barcelona, my home town so... go Biutiful! (although the movie is SO depressing and the city looks so, so bad)
Oh! and go Bardem! I met him back in 1996, also in Barcelona, in a very popular art house movie theater. I saw Moonlight & Valentino and he was calmly queuing to watch Red Rock West. While he was signing me an autograph I got to hold his popcorn box!!!
I'm from Spain and we have Javier Bardem nominated!! and Biutiful, even if the film is compiting by Mexico it is more spanish than mexican... But It's ok representing Mexico, it's a terrible movie....
