That Linking Feeling
Go Fug Yourself riffs hilariously on a photo of Noomi Rapace & Charlize Theron at the Prometheus premiere. Guldbagge!
Film Studies for Free "all that pastiche allows" looks at Far From Heaven, All That Heaven Allows and other examples of pastiche
The Kid in the Front Row discusses "the scene that made it all worth it" in Friends With Kids. I still haven't seen this one but love the cast. Same deal with Salmon Fishing... What's keeping me?
Liz Smith on all that's riding on the product known as Jeremy Renner who'd rather be "a good human"
The Guardian Darth Vader and son. Tee hee
Indiewire wonders if Matthew McConaughey could be an Oscar contender for Magic Mike. I wish I had done a post about this last week. It occurred to me and I even wrote a wee note about it on the supporting actor page but my then original thought will now be lost in groupthink.
Clutch have you heard this shady catfight rumor re: Michelle Obama vs. Kerry Washington?
Metro on Kathleen Turner still touring with the play High. Love this quote from her on her many health problems and continuing on through all of them. I wish one of my other favorite actresses [ahem] felt similarly committed to her gift:
There has been a lot of work that had to be done to be able to continue and carry on and I can’t imagine not being able to act. It’s what I set out to do when I was a kid and I love it so much... I know that I would find another work for myself if I really couldn’t (act), but until I’m completely, physically incapable of acting. I am not giving it up.
Cinema Blend has a gallery from the digital artist TXE (name?) which illustrates 93 (!) characters from the Game of Thrones franchise
The Mary Sue has a piece on actors who have starred in multiple franchises. "Get Over It"... I know most people enjoy this but I can't be the only person who hates hates hates the same actors starring in everything? I am too much of a polyamorous film slut? I need some variety up in here! I really do. I don't like the idea of Storm being Catwoman and Iron Man being Sherlock Holmes and so on.
Randomness: Here is the new poster for Rust & Bone. J'adore Jacques Audiard movies. I mean Read My Lips, The Beat That My Heart Skipped, A Prophet...
What a roll, huh?
If Rust & Bone is as good as those it'll be one of 2012's highlights for sure.
offscreen just for kicks
Monkey See "I died on the Titanic" a personal memoir

The Mary Sue animal mating rituals described in humanoid cartoons. Isabella Rossellini is surely sporting wood reading this.

I don't know how well it will translate to the screen, but the short story "Rust and Bone" by Craig Davidson is incredible. His debut collection was very polarizing because every story surrounded a horrid act of violence. The dog fighting story in particular drove a lot of the negative reviews. None of the stories are actually about the violence, but they couldn't happen without the blood and bruising.
"Rust and Bone" in particular felt real. It's a subtle story all about relationships and I hope it works on screen.
The Matthew McConnaughey performance could be similar to that of Burt Reynolds' in BOOGIE NIGHTS. .....unexpected performance in an unconvential adults only film.
I'm dying to watch "Rust & Bone". Never heard of this project before, but I love the poster and it's time to see Cotillard in a meaty role.
PS Turner is a force of nature and, probably, the most unappreciated American actress I can't think of right now.
I don't recall that dinner scene being so memorable in Friends With Benefits.
And, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen was "cute." You could say the same for "Friends," marginally.
I liked the big scene in Friends with Kids-- it was very actory and avoided typical rom-com corniness (and Jon Hamm was amazing)-- but agree with the article that the movie showed flashes of brilliance amidst many eye-rolling moments. I just couldn't get into Westfeldt's character, who was so neurotic and never got called out for it. The movie was just a little too 'precious' at times.

The official trailer of "Rust and Bone". Let me say Cotillard looks amazing. She could win the Best Actress prize at Cannes this year; but also Matthias Schoernaets is having an excellent chemistry with Cotillard, so his rise for the stardom is secure at least for European circles.
Both actors are starring the next Guillaume Canet's film -After "Tell No One" and "Pretty White Lies"-. Good luck for them
For Magic Mike - umm... interesting. Again, it's only one note, we don't know yet, but in last years we have surprises for the nominees especially in supporting categories. At least a Golden Globe nomination (Or two) are possible
-Matthew McConaughey -He's also in "Mud"-
-Channing Tatum -But hecould also be nominated as Actor in Comedy for "21 Jump Street"-
Have you tried giving Game of Thrones another go? It really is fantastic. I was a bit skeptical after the first few episodes, but really grew to love it. It's one of my favorite TV shows on right now. Plus Cersei and Tyrion are killing it this season, particularly in their scenes together.
Also, you should get out and see Salmon Fishing. Very cute. And funny - love me some KST.
Thank you for distracting me on this crazy-slow Monday! Love the variety on the links. That said, the McConnaughey Oscar rumors... I may not have seen the film yet, but this guy's skills are on par with Kristin Stewart, so I'm doubtful. (Not a compliment.) Then again, I get surprised by actors all the time (who knew I'd ever be a Jonah Hill fan?).
McConnaughey can act - when he wants to. He just seems to prefer to take the easy way out with the same cookie cutter rom coms.
He reminds me of Cage - the guy can deliver, he just doesn't want anybody to know it.
