Grammy Noms for Gatsby

Somewhere in the past 5 years I lost the thread of popular music -- I can only keep up with so many things and film is obviously my happyplace -- but even when I was firmly ensconced in the music side of pop culture,  the Grammys never made much sense to me. Needless to say I'm lost when it comes to the major nominations though I generally listen in or around the top three categories (Album, Song, Record) to see if something pricks my ears. But I digress. Let's talk about the fields that relate to what we do here at The Film Experience. Grammy has categories for everything including prizes for stage, film and television... but since they're on a different timetable than Oscar, it's a mix of 2012 films and new releases mostly The Great Gatsby that could win Grammy gold.

Someone really likes themselves some Desplat, the new John Williams for awards ubiquity. You'll notice this nominee list is Oscar's shortlist for Original Score from last year minus Anna Karenina plus Zero Dark Thirty (which was an unfortunate Oscar snub since it's so superior to Desplat's other nominated score)  and 2013's The Great Gatsby since the Grammys can't be contained by 5 nominees... sometimes.

Why does The Great Gatsby get to be nominated for both kinds of movie score categories? I do not know.

I can't remember who told me that a lot of people hate the Orange is the New Black song but when they told me I did not believe them. Best TV theme song in years and years. Or at least since Jenji Kohan's last television series. It matters not - Skyfall will continue hoovering up awards for years to come as "Temple Grandin" of movie songs.

 Odd that there are only 3 nominees when Grammy loves an overabundance. Odd that recent sensation Pippin didn't make it, but I guess it wasn't enough of a tourist crossover to catch Grammys eye? It's tough to imagine that Cyndi Lauper will lose this given her success on the boards and her previous incarnation as a Grammy winning pop star (14 noms / 1 win).

There were two different Great Gatsby album releases. One was the compilation album featuring all of the modern music. The other was the instrumental scoring. That's the difference between the two categories. Grammys are determined by actual album/single releases except for the two video categories and catch-alls like Producer of the Year. All of the score soundtrack nominees had physical/digital releases of film scores, while the compilation soundtrack nominees had physical/digital releases of collected songs featured in a film in addition to (or in lieu of) a traditional score.

I also love the Orange Is the New Black opening credits song, very fitting, Have you seen this roundtable conversation with Taylor Schilling and other tv actresses (SMG!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgnSoHZhMzk ? It's short, but very interesting and fun.

YAAAASSSSSS!!!!! To that Desplat ZDT score nomination. It has no shot though, then again, I have no idea who is the favorite in that category.

I like the OITNB theme song, but it's so long that I end up forwarding through it. And they don't even include faces to go along with the rollcall of unknown actor names. It's kinda baffling, so maybe that's why your friend doesn't like it? Good song though.

And, "Young and Beautiful" has now picked up a couple of these nominations.

I think had the OITNB theme only played in the first episode and then had just played in a 30 second vignette before each episode, people would've liked it more. Instead each episode just has the song at the sang length over and over. I'm sure for the binge-watching crowd that was a put-off. I still liked it in the end.

The Grammy is the perfect example on how the awards losing touch to both audiences and critics. We often complain hoe the Oscar always pick the safe choices, but the Grammy do it worse. Many of the music blogs don't even care to put the Grammy nominations. But guessing who they will nominated/left out is actually the fun thing to do
