11:58 p.m. The most romantic moment of the night comes from Tommy Lee Jones, of all people. He's holding up an In-N-Out burger for his wife Dawn to graze on, while looking at her lovingly. She's literally eating out of the palm of his hand right now.

Gotta love The Onion!

12:10 a.m Hilary Swank and Quentin Tarantino are deep in conversation, which she punctuates by clinking their Champagne flutes together.

This will give me nightmares.

Well, Norman Osborne is the sequel baiting. Kind of like Thanos at the end of The Avengers. I DOUBT he and his son are going to have much of any role outside of, maybe, the last 10-20 minutes. However that brings up the big question: How LONG is this thing going to be? Spider-Man 3, with 3 villains (two unintroduced) and 2 love interests (1 unintroduced), was reported as a blatantly overstuffed 131 minute film (subtracting the credits). This film, if Norman has more of a role than sequel baiting, has the same villain count (but all unintroduced), as well as, possibly, ALL THREE of his most important love interests. Also, the tie-in video game might be explicitly in continuity. To those who are worried, the only really important difference from the final status quo of the last film that the game adds is that Black Cat is around. That's it. Everything else is self contained and the story ends right back where it started. That might mean, if Felicity Jones IS Black Cat, that you'll get Spidey knowing who she is right away, even if YOU, the audience, don't. However, even with that, that still means they have to introduce MJ (Shailene Woodley is weird casting when balanced against Emma freaking Stone), Harry Osborne and up to three villains. So, my upper threshold on length would be...195 minutes, before credits.

Paul Outlaw -- you and me both!

SusanP-- i know they're unpopular at the moment but they are so routinely hilarious I think people need to let one mistake slide.

February 28, 2013 | Unregistered Commenternathanielr

Right, I totally forgot about that until you just reminded me!

That list of pics with no Oscar noms just reiterated what a great year we had in film. TDKR should have had quite a few technical nods, as well as for Mr. Hardy. I just watched Killer Joe, and Gina Gershon just blew me away. I still don't know what to make of the film--have to think on that--but it does make me forgive Matthew for The Wedding Planner.

brookesboy: Um...tech nods? Maybe. But the acting was in service of what might be the worst script of a trilogy ender ever. (The Godfather Part III can finally rest relatively easily.) It's not even like you can say it's "just nitpicking." Five *foundational* levels of The Dark Knight Rises' script are completely BROKEN. 1. The Dent Act. I live in Canada and I know that the legal system is structured differently. But the presumption the movie makes that Gotham, a MUNICIPALITY, is able to not only pass this law, but also keep it active for eight years, is ludicrous. Mob bosses would get senators to attack that thing like bloodhounds. I'd give it two years, tops. 2. Robin John Blake is supposed to be Batman's equal as a detective. What they use to establish this is the guy staring into Bruce Wayne's eyes to figure out that he's Batman. How about some actual evidence and THEN we'll talk? Or at least a challenge from Bruce Wayne? 3. Robin John Blake is supposed to be viewed as Bruce Wayne's physical equal. What they use to establish this is the guy taking down two guys in the same time Batman takes down eight of them. 4. Bruce Wayne ends the movie structuring his will in such a way that his replacement is locked into the Batcave during the day. I'd just love to see what happens three years later when he becomes fullblown ASBAR-like from the stircraziness. 5. It forgets that they dropped a big thematic thread from the last film about "They'll be doubling up the cells at the rate this city's inhabitants are losing their minds." And instead of following that thread and saying "how do we manage to do Poison Ivy" or "how do we do The Riddler" or "how do we do one or more of the many other flashy Gotham criminals", they choose to end on a big ol destruction plot from Bane and Talia, even though you dropped hints toward the exact opposite thing happening.

Volvagia, I don't know too much about comic book lore or specifically the Batman legacy. I judged TDKR how I judge most every film--on face value. I don't usually enjoy the genres of action, superheroes, or comics, but this movie grabbed me from the opening and didn't let go. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. For me, TDKR's cinematography, sound editing and score packed a visceral impact that built relentlessly to a thrilling crescendo. Add to this some real emotional and political resonance, and I was sold. Mr. Hardy had to rely on only his voice and body control to give a performance--and a dazzling one he gave. I realize that TDKR is a polarizing movie, but for me, despite a flawed script, it worked beautifully.

The Dent Act in the TKDR seems to be commenting on the American post-9/11 bills like The PATRIOT Act that faced little opposition until it was much too late, but it gave a lot of people piece of mind. That was frankly the only connective tissue it had with the The Dark Knight where the build-up of the noble lie about Harvey Dent as a hero and the blame shifting on Batman ended that film but by the next film became a house of cards. That said, the revelation over how Gordon would spill and that it would be believed just because Bane said so was incredibly flimsy.

And I would watch a movie that had Chris Cooper and Dane DeHaan as father and son. Heck, let's rescue Shailene Woodley and put her with him. And Sally Field. I was none to pleased about TASM and now I feel like I am being trolled hearing three straight names of people I really like getting cast. But Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone's charm offensive actually bored me.

The Awards Daily List is my Top 12 of 2012 (minus Django, The Hobbit, and Beasts of the Southern Wild) plus most of my 12 Great Films You Missed in 2012 list. I hope I remember those films and catch the ones I haven't seen yet (like Take This Waltz and End of the Watch).

Emma Stone seems to have jumped to the A-list without any credentials. The only starring roles I've seen her in are The Help and Spidey4....not overly impressed.

The funny thing is, this girl in my class was talking about how much she hates Anne Hathaway because she's such a keener (maybe that's why she stops talking to me lol even though I'm not even a keener)! That's why she didn't even watch "Les Mis". It's interesting so many women don't like her. Maybe I have a soft spot for her, so I never understand why people think she's eager/keener/annoying/irritating. Didn't Winslet do that? Lawrence? To be honest, EVERYONE loves getting awards.

Also, rewatching Million Dollar Baby, I have to say the writing/script didn't hold up really well (damn you Paul Haggis!). However, Swank's performance, even though it's not the best that year, was above Lawrence's this year definitely.

brookesboy: Check out Easy A and you'll probably "get it".

March 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Lars - i dont even know what a "keener" is? !

brookesboy -- it was EASY A that did it and she's just great in it. total movie star calling card.

thanks, Nathan, I'll have to check it out. I just got Take Shelter at the store...it's cued up!

March 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

Well, I'm just quoting her lol
But strangely enough, the word "keen" also could mean piercing, so maybe she just hates her voice...
I would rather see Emma Stone headlines a comedy rather than have her as someone love's interest.
