"Hit Me..." Summery Schedule

Every Wednesday we look at a picture together and choose our own "best shot" individually. It's a great way to see a motion picture through multiple sets of eyes. Join us...  Add eyeballs to our crazy blogging monster that just looked at cloned monsters, rotten to the core dames, and stars reborn.

Summertime, Ripley, Fantasia, Hud

NEXT
5/8 Summertime (1955) David Lean shoots Katharine Hepburn in Venice
5/15 The Talented Mr Ripley (1999) Tom would really like Dickie's life, thank you very much
5/22 Fantasia (1941) a strictly conducted 'best shot' special. You have three options:

1) Beginners (or Short on Time?): In honor of the May Centennial of "The Rite of Spring", choose your Best Shot from that section of Disney's experimental early feature.
2) Apprentice: Choose from 'Rite of Spring' AND the movie as a whole. Two shots.
3) Sorcerer:  Your post will contain six screenshots, your choice for "best" from each of the movies major classical movements: The Nutcracker Suite, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Rite of Spring, The Pastoral Symphony, Dance of the Hours, and Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria

5/29 Hud (1963) 50th Anniversary! Nominated for 7 Oscars but outrageously not Best Picture. If you've never seen it, this is mandatory viewing before our Hit Me Hiatus in June. (Season 4 concludes in August)

I already have my shots for Ripley and Jurassic Park picked out. Those are two of my all-time faves. I'll still rewatch just in case i find something else that strikes me though.

nat - what is the screen capture program that you've recommended in the past? would like to participate, maybe, and have no idea where to start...

I'm torn on the Minghella choice because on one hand I think I have my five favourite shots already and that movie sure is gorgeous, but in considering Minghella and his best "best-shotty" film I realised (I wonder if deliberately?) we'd never done a Best Picture winner for the series. I wonder which shall be the first one.

I'm looking forward to the April and after titles particularly, I'm so curious to see what people have to say about RIPLEY, HUD, SUMMERTIME.

Roark -- i use apple's built in snapshot system, (shift+command+4) but on dvd programs which block screen captures the easiest thing is CAPTURE ME because it works like a transparent overlay.(the only annoying thing about it is that you have to physically "save" each capture before clicking again whereas most built in snapshot programs just automatically save your clicks.

awesome - thanks!

Oh, "The Talented Mr. Ripley." Such a gorgeous film in so many respects (location, art direction, costumes, music, Jude Law). I'm usually neither here nor there with the series, but I'm looking forward to that one.

The Talented Mr. Ripley is such a weird film - so much about it on paper is terrible - 'Oscar begging' film by 'Oscar begging director' (at that point), Miramax prestige hope, Matt Damon giving an almost bad performance, removes so much of the menace from the source material to homogenize the story.

Yet Law, Blanchett, Paltrow, Hoffman and the cinematography/production design are so PERFECT that I can forgive it almost everything else...

Ooh, you've got some good ones here. I'll definitely be joining in for a bunch of these.

I'd love to participate in the short films if I can get my hands on them. Will the short films be available online (not Netflix?)

Also, if you're still taking suggestions, may I suggest the animated film "Tales of the Night?" Not only is a throwback to the first animated film, it has some GORGEOUS images to choose from, and I would love an excuse to go nuts with screencaps.

everyone -- those shorts are both available to watch instantly on vimeo if you just click on their links. EASY. and they're short :)

Well I'm always glad to have an excuse to watch the Judy version of A Star is Born again so thanks. I may revisit the Janet Gaynor one too since its been years but even though I dearly love Babs I don't think anything could possibly make me sit through the piece of crap that is the Barbra version of Star again!

I've always meant to watch Hud from beginning to end, I've caught bits and pieces through the years, but somehow it never makes it to the top of my list. Now I'll have to make sure I see by the time it comes up.

A Star is Born, Double Indemnity, Summertime, and Hud?!? I already loving this lineup. I've seen all of three of these except for Summertime, which I hear great things about, Now, I must definitely check it out since the other three are pure classics!

I am a social-network-agnostic bit I'm seriously considering opening a tumblr just to post muy favorite shot of Hud. Or may we email you the shot?

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

Hud is unforgettable. One of Paul's top five performances. So glad he reteamed with Ritt after Paris Blues. Thanks, Nathan, I just now realized I need to watch this again. It's been years.

Ah, "the one that got away." (Wasn't Patricia Neal just divine?)

And has there ever been a more luminous s screen couple than Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow? I'd say they're collective beauty in The Talented Mr. Ripley may pale only to Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger in 9 1/2 Weeks.

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

Mareko, for collective beauty, my favorite is Jennifer Jones and Gregory Peck in Duel In the Sun. Can u imagine their babies?
