Coming Soon the original Fantastic Four movies were just terrible and I have literally no optimism for the reboot either despite admiring director Josh Trank's Chronicle and virtually all of the actors individually just not the in roles he's considering them for. His casting is too young, too arbitrary, too non-WASPy. I know it's foolish to lament the lack of role opportunities for hot blondes in Hollywood - Hahaha - but if any superhero role ever was meant for a WASPy blonde and a WASPy blonde alone it was Sue Storm. Kate Mara and Emmy Rossum don't fit the bill and isn't Miles Teller way too young and fun-loving for the science genius gravitas of Mr Fantastic?

You know how much we love the topic of age and acting here at TFE. Well on this recent HuffPo conversation they discuss the earning power drop for actresses which comes, they say, at 34. With men their power doesn't drop until their mid 50s.
I started the video aggravated that all the panelists seemed clueless about the disparity when it came to the men... I mean it's so obvious since male actors don't even start their reign until their 30s usually (Leonardo DiCaprio is not the norm, he's a rarity. What's far more common is the Channing Tatums and Brad Pitts of the world who kick around for a bit winning some attention and then *BOOM* supernova at about 30)... but I'm glad they ignored the men and discussed the women. It's an interesting conversation and Lisa Rosman is a critic I liked and she's good on the fly discussing this. I would need to read more about this study to believe the results fully though because from where I sit it does seem to me that actress careers are lasting longer, even in terms of lead roles, than they once did. Obviously Sandra Bullock, even more successful than she once was as she approaches 50 -- and she was pretty successful to begin with! -- is a rarity. And yet in general it does seem to me that the major actresses are having longer shelf lives than they once did. They don't seem to just vanish until their mid to late 40s early 50s now (notice the quick fades of Hunter, Allen, Linney, Clarkson, etcetera) rather than the late 30s early 40s it once was.

Thank goodness the Village Voice article actually specifies Disney princess movie. Now I have no reason for a wonderful rant about Lilo & Stitch. I love that film so much. I still think it should have won Best Animated Feature over Spirited Away. A Miyazaki fantasy is always going to receive a lot of praise; an animated film about two sisters fighting against the foster care system to keep their remaining family together (played on two levels: Nani fighting to keep custody of Lilo, and Lilo and Nani fighting to keep custody of Stitch) is something far more ambitious.
And it's always good to see more successful writers than myself also working in a pile of their research material and madness. Thanks, Richard Brody.
Re: that Frozen article, kinda weird that Brave went completely unmentioned. I guess because it's Pixar, if you want to be technical about it, but it's all Disney, and especially in the past several years it's all Lasseter, and Merida is obviously intended to be part of the Disney princess tradition, so it's weird to leave out... Except that Brave also kind of torpedoes the premise of the article, since it arguably did everything Frozen did a couple years earlier, so maybe that's the real reason?
Not to take anything away from Frozen. I went to the sing along version with my boyfriend last night. We had the theater to ourselves, took parts in the duets, and had a blast.
The original "Fantastic Four" movies were not a complete loss. They did have Shirtless! Chris Evans in extended scenes.

Julia Roberts looks AMAZING in that video! I mean literally gorgeous! Is she aging backwards, what the heck? Also LOL at George Clooney's joke about Gwyneth Paltrow the whole thing seemed so silly and the fact that they somehow got pulled into it was so dumb. I remember all of those tabloids claiming Julia was mad at and not speaking to George and Julia because they agreed to pose for the cover of the magazine. I'm sure they were both like "What the hell does any of this have to do with us?"

this whole Gwyneth vs VF story is so ridiculous. i can't believe people got hooked on it. those tabloids are pathetic. still I don't understand Julia Roberts' reaction. she looked like George has said something he shouldn't have.
Robert G: Lilo and Stitch is fine, and (conceptually) way more interesting than Spirited Away. But it's still far too unfocused for either aspect to fully WORK.
Nat: I wouldn't necessarily say being "WASPy" is nearly as necessary for Sue Storm (the right age (which WON'T be faked), bright blonde hair (which CAN be faked, through hair dye) AND (most importantly, especially in approximating the character AS SHE IS NOW) the feeling of a strong intelligence behind those eyes (which CAN'T be faked), though? Those THREE things are CRUCIAL. Desirability is only a bonus. (Seriously, though, these are STILL both better casting choices than Alba.) as it is for, say, Janet Van Dyne (who, implicitly, unashamedly OWNS her racial and social background IN HER SUPERHERO NAME. So...Evangeline Lilly, who's at least in talks for "the female lead" of Ant-Man? A bit older than I'd have gone, but if she's Janet? I accept her more than the bizarre Rashida Jones (seriously) rumors. It was bad when the Ultimate Universe did it (Asian-American instead of Black and Jewish) and it'd have been bad if the MCCU did it.)
Mister Fantastic: Casey Affleck.
Sue Storm: Charlize Theron. No question. Partially so the only superhero movie on her filmography ISN'T Hancock. Hancock was a MESS.
Johnny Storm: Eh, I'm not TOO against Michael B. Jordan if they're going for a mixed race makeup (he's probably the one I'm LEAST against of these casting choices), and it'd fit with me leaning on him being an unplanned child a decade or more younger than Sue. Josh Hutcherson or Miles Teller would also be perfect HERE instead of as freaking Reed...(Doom pushes commenter out of the way) RICHARRRRRRRRRRDS!!!! (commenter slams Doom back behind fourth wall) Leave! (Sorry for the gag, I just had to do it.)
Ben Grimm: Eh, I don't know if anyone will ever look more PERFECT than Chiklis in that role and his insistence on it being a practical effect was a bonus that got him deeper into character. Still, Christian Cooke at least looks right, so here's hoping he can do the accent work.
Doctor Doom: Bold, strong voice that you believe would be speaking entirely in capitals. (Yes, that's actually canon that Doom speaks in Caps Lock.) If he hadn't just died, PSH probably would be one of those "almost TOO easy" picks. However, going for someone who's around the right age, still alive and not averse to coming across as hammy? Christian Bale. He hasn't played someone who's supposed to be out and out EVIL since American Psycho and it's surprising he's never wound up returning to that since he was SO GOOD THERE. (Doom speaking from behind fourth wall: Goooood. Doom is tired of being played in live action as a plank of wood!)
With his hoarder-office-Unabomber-beard-blazing-blue-eyes-writing-is-sexual-and-transcendent manifesto, Richard Brody is like the prophet in the desert howling at the world that Cinema is Serious. So it's completely startling when he mentions his wife and kids, and how he sits at home with the remote eating Lowfat Ben and Jerry's.
Nat: Though why we're even talking about the casting as the primary reason the movie's going to suck (though that is part of it) is baffling. The primary issue is that it has six credited writers (already usually a warning sign). Two are decent. The other four are Seth Grahme-Smith, Simon Kinberg (who script doctored the first two. Be very afraid), an unknown (klaxon: Studio Hack) and one of the writers on Green Lantern.
volvagia -- it's pretty mean to assume that an unknown is a hack. maybe they're brilliant? but yeah any connection to green lantern or the first two movies is worrisome.
Nat: Okay, that was harsh. But six credited writers? Three of whom, Seth Grahme-Smith, Kinberg and Michael Green, are partially responsible for Burton's Dark Shadows, the first two Fantastic Four Movies and Green Lantern respectively? Yeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaah. Count that as another stable back in Marvel's hands by the end of 2015.
Volvagia, I don't disagree about the focus. I just prefer the film. I come close to putting Treasure Planet above Spirited Away for similar reasons, but the execution isn't nearly as good. Lilo & Stitch just hits me right. It's so sweet and tries.
I enjoyed the original "Fantastic Four" movie a good B movie sci-fi fun- this re-make looks like " I Was A Teen Age Fantastic Four" which goes against the mythology of the comic book. The "Four" are not X- Men.
I really enjoyed reading it, you can be a great author. I will definitely bookmark your blog and maybe come back someday Thanks for a great article. Please continue to uphold!
