Sarah Jessica Parker Loves "Melancholia"
Who'da thunk it?
I love odd celebrity interviews -- the interview not the celebrity -- and this one qualifies. It's rapid fire, 73 questions in 5 minutes while you tour one floor of SJP's brownstone here in NYC. We knew Sarah Jessica Parker loved The Way We Were (1973) which is referenced so beautifully in one of Sex & the City's best episodes, but who knew that Lars von Trier's Melancholia was such a favorite?!
My favorite answer of all though is her response to "heels or flats?". Hee

loves it....
Well then she has terrible taste. lol. That movie was awful much less the best of the past 5 years.
With that said, that interview was super fun. Came away liking SJP quite a bit and she looks great.
Love the decor of her home. Wish Ferris Bueller was there. He'll forever remain adorable. I hope to someday get her side of the Kim Cattrall conflict. Sarah Jessica is such a cute girly name makes me want to jump up and down when I say it in my highest vocal register. She loves Greece but cites Von Trier over Lanthimos! Bummer.
Melancholia is fantastic, what are you talking about?
I love her stairs.
Now I'm interested to see her work with Lars Von Trier... lol. Good taste, though.
3rtful - Kim Cattrall conflict? There was a conflict???
Yet she couldn't watch Brokeback Mountain (lost some respect for her after that).
@Jase: I was just about to reference her failure to even watch "Brokeback Mountain" (which I find rather ironic since she has such a following in the gay community). I still like her when she has good material (which isn't often lately), but that made me cock an eyebrow in her general direction.
But its good to know that she at least appreciated the visual poetry of, "Melancholia", which was probably my favorite film of that year. I still consider it a crime that Kirsten Dunst didn't gain more awards traction for that performance. I'm already hoping that Uma Thurman can snag a supporting nod this year (though i'm doubtful).
The Kim Cattrall conflict was pure media fabrication. You know how they love to put girls against each other. Nothing there. Move on.
And choosing Melancholia show's she's quite discerning in her taste. That movie was one of the best cinematic experiences of that year.

Kim Cattrall is open with her frustration with Sarah Jessica not being in her corner about equal compensation. Cattrall had nothing to lose if Sex and the City were to initially fail. However its ascent in the pop culture mainstream meant she had cache to leverage whatever she wanted from the business at that stage in her career. Well all things aren't equal. Sarah Jessica received the bulk of award season attention. Beauty and fashion companies went to Sarah Jessica for endorsement deals. Cattrall wanted at least equal money to Sarah Jessica because their characters are the Captain Kirk and Mr Spock of the franchise. Cattrall having worked on a Star Trek movie knows that both actors had deals that were equal in the money and perks. Sarah Jessica was fine with the dynamic of being the primary benefactor because she was giving up a promising film career to be on series television. This of course before it became necessary for film actors to do this. Cattrall resented that Sarah Jessica had control over her cast members' story lines as she was given a creative consulting credit from season one and eventually became an active executive producer. Cattrall was powerless without an ally in Sarah Jessica. This is not media fabrication. Cattrall has shared her side of the story publicly. And if one looks at Sex and the City critically you can tell by season three was the beginning of serious friction that would spill over into their scenes together. Season five is the worst creatively and their characters' on screen conflicts are quite obvious mirroring of real life. Sarah Jessica having the final say made sure that after season five season six of Sex and the City would be the final one. Of course Sarah Jessica wanted to use a possible Sex and the City movie as leverage to regain her leading lady movie career. Cattrall held out for more money. In the end neither she nor Sarah Jessica are satisfied with the results of those movies and where their standings are in the business at present.
Can someone explain to me the Brokeback Mountain situation? I'm not aware of this.
Side note on SJP: I love that her favorite lyrics are from the Sondheim musical, Company. She really can have great taste ;)
Another one here adding to the love for Melancholia. It was my favourite film of that year. I understood exactly what Kirsten's character was going through, and the strength that depression can give you. Forget Meryl and Viola, in my opinion Kirsten Dunst was the Best Actress of that year.
God, Manhattan real estate is just ridiculous! Look at how tiny those rooms are and you know she paid like $14 million for that townhouse.
Can someone please shed light on the whole SJP/Brokeback Mountain thing. I've seen it referenced before but I still have no idea what the issue is. Did she refuse to see the film? I wish someone could speak about it without being so vague as to why she didn't see the film.
Cattrall was indeed open about her wanting more money for season 7, which ended up not happening, and for the movies, but she has also been clear that the beef was not with SJP. Both ladies have openly said how sick they are of people pitting them against each other and stubbornly don't want to believe that they get along. Both Cattrall and SJP have said that. Check it out. It's on the record.
JAMIE -- i haven't heard of this either.
LVT VS SJP - let's make this happen. Surely Lars can make a film for her. One that people would confuse as "misogynistic" when really not.
Loved this interview. So fun and a lot of great little insights and moments. Plus, she has a ping pong table in her drawing room!
Are you guys referring to this? Because it is not about her refusing to see Brokeback.

None of their PR whitewashing alters the reality of their on-set conflicts that stemmed from Cattrall's frustration from her lack of power and compensation with no actual support from Sarah Jessica who is the star and executive producer of the series.
If you want real clarification on the SJP/Kim Cattrall relationship -- look up the Howard Stern interview Kim did a couple of years ago on youtube. It's fascinating in general, but she does touch on these issues. Most of it dealing with money and HBO's cheapness.
Another Hundred People. Yes!
Do I pick you up or do I meet you there or shall we let it go? ♪ Did you get my message? 'Cause I looked in vain ♫ Can we see each other Tuesday if it doesn't rain?
P.S. Impressive liquor collection.
Anyone want to try to convince this cynic that this casual, "spontaneous" interview isn't rehearsed?
