New Pixar sequels announced, one more incredible than the other
Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 5:30PM Disney announced today that Pixar has more sequels in the pipeline after Finding Dory in 2016. For our sins, one of them is Cars 3, because as long as the company can make the GDP of several small nations by selling Lightning McQueen lunchboxes, there's no compelling reason to stop making Cars films, apparently. The good news is that Cars 2 probably sets the bar low enough that the next film in the franchise ought to be able to blast right over it without much trouble.
By far the better news, though, is that the studio is also gearing up for The Incredibles 2, a sequel to the one Pixar film that seems rich with possibilites to have its plot expanded upon. And Brad Bird is on hand to write the screenplay, at least, which is pretty much the only thing they had to say to keep me, for one, more than a little optimistic.
No dates are announced, but the studio has a full slate through Thanksgiving, 2016, so we likely have a solid three years of alternating hopefulness with troubling stories about last-minute director replacements or more.
Anyone besides me genuinely excited for The Incredibles 2? Can anyone muster up something even a little nice to say about Cars 3?

Pray God they manage to effectively squeeze that "I don't know, something Amazing I guess" kid on the sequel somehow. I dislike the idea of sequels repeating the beats of the original, just for "I LIKE IT!! MOAR!!!" sake, but it's been almost 10 years now, and the kid in the tricicle still cracks me up every. single. time.
Cars 3: At least it's not Toy Story 4
Another Cars movie? Gross. I don't mind another Incredibles. But this is disappointing news. No more sequels please.
i am speechless about CARS 3. the franchise that killed Pixar's track record (sigh).
anne marie -- you found the only nice thing to say! well done. it absolutely broke my heart to see that lame toy story short AFTER toy story 3. that should have been our goodbye, our perfect goodbye.
The Incredibles is freakin genius. It is an incredible comedy, possibly the best 'superhero movie' ever and a very good action film. The characters, dialogue and voice acting are so sharp. Easily my favorite Pixar film - and definitely the funniest one.
For all of the above, I am both super excited and super nervous for the sequel. If it's bad people will use it as an excuse to knock down the first one.
But you're right, it's sort of built for a sequel and I'd love to spend more time with Mr. & Mrs. Incredibles & fam - so I'm mostly very excited (clearly).
Weird that Lasseter seems determined to run Pixar into the ground while bringing Walt Disney Animation back to prominence. Oh well, we'll always have those 15, amazing years (1995-2010).

Do we really need more sequels?
I couldn't care less about a Cars sequel, since I never even liked the first one.
However, the Incredibles news makes me both hopeful and hesitant. The first one is such a nearly perfect film, I would hate for anything to tarnish it. But I have faith in Brad Bird.
I'm really curious to know whether they'll set the story 10 years later or not. I think it would be wonderful for the narrative, but the freedom of animation means they could just as easily have it be the next day.
V -- the answer is "no" but i assume the question is rhetorical.
Gregarius -- i have the same fear but at least Pixar proved with Toy Story that great films can get great sequels that don't feel like lazy cash-ins.
I haven't found the Grand Pixar Sequel Experiment as offensive as most - Toy Story 3 and Monsters U were both strong films, TS 3 especially, and I don't really find the idea of Finding Dory or Incredibles 2 all that terrifying. Cars 2 sucked, but that's one genuinely bad movie out of how many now...? Plus, next year we start getting the next wave of Pixar originals, so everyone bemoaning their death as a creatively innovative entity should maybe just cool it for a little while...

CARS 2 is far better than Nathaniel thinks. :) But as I said before, maybe it IS better outside the English speaking countries, with dubbing and all. I don't know. Still, it had good reviews here, in not-English-speaking Europe, and it was far more intelligent than most of the not-Pixar movies. :)
The Incredibles 2 is huge news. I'd feel even more elated about it if Brad Bird was directing as well but we'll see where that goes. Such a perfect set of story and characters for a sequel. Admittedly, it would feel more special if it wasn't for all the damn sequels coming out of them lately but alas.
No comment on Cars 3. SMH. 1 was undercooked (like Brave) and 2 was just a money grab in the worst way. They didn't even bother trying to solve the story problems from the first one, they just added more of them. And the argument that they need to make money to fund the more ambitious projects is moot now since they, of all studios, have proven that the original ambitious projects are the most beloved, critically and commercially successful.
Do think Incredibles 2 will be good? Yes. Would I prefer to see Bird and Pixar making something wholly original? Yes.
On a similar note to The Incredibles getting a sequel: Can we get an animated MOVIE about the entire Bat Family? Please, Warner Animation Group? Yes, the ENTIRE core Bat Family (In order of introduction into mainline continuity, that is: Bruce Wayne, Alfred Pennyworth, Dick Grayson, Barbara Gordon, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, Cassandra Cain, Damian Wayne) as movie subject's. I'd much rather that be done than whatever Storks or Smallfoot wind up as. I know why that almost certainly WON'T happen: Edgier content, length concerns of balancing the entire Bat Family in a single story AND introducing all their "deals" to a mainstream audience and Robin being an unusually contentious concept/character for something that's been around pretty much since the beginning at this point.
