Cannes Closing Ceremony - Live Blog

Cannes closes tomorrow and Diana still has a couple more pieces to share with you I believe, but now the prizes are handed out - here are quick notes from the ceremony.

12:45 PM EST the Jury has arrived which means the show is about to begin. Jane Campion is too busy to stand with her jury (at least at this second in the screencap)... and how have I never noticed how toweringly tall Nicolas Winding Refn is (far right)? I love his "who, me?" pose here as if he's aware of the disparity. This image alarmed me so much that I looked up photos of him with Ryan Gosling his 6'2" muse and Refn is yet taller.

12:49 Uma Thurman arrives with Quentin Tarantino and is wearing something like a white winged dove across her bosom... ooh, baby, ooh, said "ooh" ♫. Gorgeous as ever and I've always admired how bold her color choices are. Bright yellow at the Pulp Fiction 20th anniversary screening at Cannes and pure white today.

12:59 Timothy Spall, Mr Turner himself, has arrived which means we know where Best Actor is going (there didn't seem to be much competition for that this year (unlike Best Actress). Best Actor, Oscar Division, will have much more competition.

1:04 Xavier Dolan arrived looking very pleased with himself #whatelseisnew (I kid. Mostly. I enjoy his work. Intermittently he looks nervous but Mommy is definitely winning something)

1:05 Sophia Loren just had some sort of near wardrobe malfunction and is now holding tightly to her gown (perchance she tripped on the train on the steps). MORE...

Dolan and one of his two "Mommy" muses on the red carpet

1:15 The jury is taking yet more photos. We're obviously about to go in.

1:20 And here is where I realize my live feed is looping the arrivals and the show is already underway. DRAT.

BEST ACTOR
1:22 Arriving at the show in progress apparently Timothy Spall has been talking for a long time, and reading the acceptance speech from his phone (tacky!)

BEST ACTRESS
1:23 In a shocker it's JULIANNE MOORE from Maps to the Stars. "Vivre Julie Moore" LOL. Pity she's not there to accept since she never* wins anything. And not to say 'I told ya so' or anything BUT...

* please to note: many literalists have corrected me listing the festival prizes and tv prizes that Julianne has won. But Julianne is a movie actress so I'm referring to the mainstream movie awards which elude her. Festival wins are rarely televised widely so only devotees ever see her being honored. It's frustrating for someone with such a gift.

BEST SCREENPLAY
1:28 Jane Campion flubs the names and laughs are herself. The winner is the Russian film Leviathan written by Oleg Negin & Andrey Zvyagintsev

1:33 JURY PRIZE
[TIE] Xavier Dolan for Mommy and Jean-Luc Godard for Goodbye to Language. I would transcribe Xavier Dolan's beautiful speech -- he really loves Jane Campion and The Piano (1993) -- but the translator talks over him the whole time so it's like listening to two speeches at once.

1:39 BEST DIRECTOR presented by Adrien Brody
Bennett Miller for Foxcatcher. The first of many awards?

1:42 TRIBUTE
The legendary Sophia Loren is honored with a clip reel. And now she speaks in French to the crowd

1:44 GRAND PRIZE presented by Sophia
The Wonders by Alice Rohrwacher

1:50 PALME D'OR presented by Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino, QT embarrasses himself with a faux French accent
Winter Sleep by Nuri Bilge Ceylan

Finis!

Thanks Nathaniel. And ditto on Julianne Moore, it would have been nice to hear a speech from her.

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMDA

Go Julianne! Get back to the Oscars!

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBia

Dam Xavier Dolan looked really disappointed for winning the Jury Prize. Maybe he was really expecting to win the Palme d'or??

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMDA

So happy for Julianne and Bennett Miller!

I'm concerned that Maps to the Stars will be too much for the Academy, though... but a couple of her 2015 projects seem pretty Oscar-friendly. In fact, this could be the start of a "comeback" for her (especially with her high-profile Hunger Games role) even though she never really went away.

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Go Julianne!!! She truly deserves this, she's amzing in Maps, ONE OF HER BEST PERFORMANCES EVER.

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterferdi

Agree with Suzanne. Julianne seems rejuvenated recently. I hope her best role is something we haven't seen yet. Because it would be epic considering her past. And I hope she's honored for it.

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermurtada

Disappointed for Marion. Happy for Julianne. And relived it wasn't Swank.

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered Commenter3rtful

*relieved it wasn't Swank.

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered Commenter3rtful

/3rtful -- or maybe you're also reliving her wins?

murtada & suzanne -- i SO hope you're right. artistic rejuvenation is necessary when one has a long career.

May 24, 2014 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Oscar schmoscar. The Cannes Best Actress prize has been won by the likes of Shelley Duvall for '3 Women,' Anne Bancroft for 'The Pumpkin Eater,' and Isabelle Huppert for 'The Piano Teacher.' I consider it to be the highest accolade a film actor can receive and am thrilled for Julianne!

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMike M.

Such a gimmick to have the youngest and oldest directors in the festival tie for a prize, especially since the Godard is mostly just ridiculous. Glad Mommy was recognized but I wish it had been allowed to do so on its own.

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDominique

Moore won what a joke once again playing someone on meds what a stretch been there done that she is a bad actress the new Nicolas Cage :)

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTrisha

Julianne you go girl it's about bloody time.

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermark

I notice some people will have a dig at Swank simply for not winning, pathetic!!!

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermark

As I already wrote, with the award she received today for "Maps to the Stars", Julianne Moore becomes only the fifth person to have won acting prizes at all three major European film festivals [Cannes, Venice and Berlin] (2002, Far from Heaven - Venice; 2003, The Hours - Berlin).
The other members of this very exclusive club are Jack Lemmon, Sean Penn, Isabelle Huppert and Juliette Binoche.

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermarco70go

Very disappointed Marion Cotillard lost. What does the girl have to do to win at Cannes (or get another Oscar nod, for that matter)? If she had to lose to anyone, though, I'm glad it was Julianne Moore.

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMia

Yay Julianne!

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSad man

"QT embarrasses himself with..." Pick a card, any card.

Nat, don't hate on Spall for saving the trees! ;-)

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

Julianne Moore actually becomes the fourth actor as Isbelle Huppert did not win the silver bear for best actress but won for outstanding artistic contribution. So Moore follows Binoche as the second women and Penn and Lemmon as the fourth actor.

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterEoin Daly

The Dolan stuff on Godard is a little strange because he has definitely seen his earlier films and has name-checked a few as an influence. I have to assume he meant current, contemporary Godard, which is quite possibly the most polarizing art house work coming out these days. But early Godard definitely seems like an influence. Just like how influential The Piano was for him. That was genuine. He seemed initially disappointed to be be placed there instead of Palme, but I loved that speech and that moment he got to share with Campion.

Spall speech was kind of a mess and the cuts to Bellucci and jury members aside from Bernal kind of a showed, 'Well, we had to give out an award to a male actor'. The competition did not seem too strong and they probably would have given it to the Winter Sleep male lead if Cannes rules let Palme d'Or winners receive other honors.

Reviews for Maps to the Stars had me throw away Moore as a contender even if her reviews were always glowing. Love the choice, even if I secretly wanted a Binoche-K-Stew share of the actress award.

How strange that two consecutive years of out there, art house directors getting Directing honors that such a mainstream filmmaker like Bennett Miller gets Directing prize.

Refn seemed the most vocal of the Campion jury, although I definitely think Jane still had a lot of power and influence. It helped that they, somehow, seemed to agree on a lot of the films.

The Leviathan director seemed a little disappointed. Screenplay and not Director/Top 3 seems like a back-handed compliment. Plus, poor Jane could not pronounce his name and he had to wait a little longer to get up for his prize.

I wonder which In Competition films Uma and QT saw, because they definitely were not too familiar with Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Also, Quentin's new hair, while an improvement, makes him resemble Bob Hope.

Nice to know that 3rtful really pays attention to the press. Because those early reviews on The Homesman made it immediately DOA from awards consideration.

In Competition Films on My Must-See List:
Sils Maria
Maps to the Stars
Mommy
Winter Sleep
Leviathan
Timbuktu
The Wonders
Mr. Turner

Enough with praising Moore pretty girl but the acting sucks get over it :)

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTrisha

Moore whatever

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTrisha

Trisha, you are a troll!

Moore is one of the finest actresses from her generation along with Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet, Juliette Binoche, Laura Linney and Isabelle Huppert so in my eyes she is a worthy winner.

It would have been nice if the Palm went to Dolan.

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDaniel B.

Do not compare Moore to the great Cate a real insult to Cate enough said :)

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTrisha

Moore was so great in 9 months with Hugh Grant and one life to live soa

Go to hell Trisha, you'll be eaten alive here if you're still trolling The Julianne

I am literally screaming in joy when I know she won it, go get the oscar, girl!
But also kind of disappointed that marion didn't win

Winter Sleep is never reviewed in here, as far as I can remember, maybe Diana can share her thoughts on it?

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered Commentercraver

If you're going to troll at least try to be amusing.

To me, Juliette, Julianne and Swinton are the greats... very happy the first two have their triple crowns.

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

marco70go , Eoin Daly -- Why aren't you including San Sebastian? Lemmon won there.

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

I wish Pfeiffer would take notes from Moore: challenge yourself, Woman! Even if Hollywood agism, sexism, and whatever the fuck else are going against you.

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBVR

Oh God, as if I needed any more reasons to dislike Dolan - that Godard quote pushes the dislike into violent rage.

Meantime, I am ecstatic for Julianne! And also for Cannes. Sounds like such a strong competition slate - so many films to look forward to.

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered Commentergoran

"To me, Juliette, Julianne and Swinton are the greats"

One of my favourite (and wisest) things I've read in the TFE comments section

May 24, 2014 | Unregistered Commentergoran

Actually I've just come across Dolan's list of top 10 films, which is not only impeccable (Forbidden Games! Cries and Whispers! Cranes Are Flying!) but also includes Godard (Pierrot le fou!). So I take back the above. I'm a fan now.

May 25, 2014 | Unregistered Commentergoran

Boo, I missed the livestream and now the awards ceremony doesn't seem to be on-line anywhere. This is what I get for leaving the house!!!

JULIANNE MOORE WON. OMFUCKINGOD.

And the bitch wasn't even there! WHAT.

This is so NOT how I expected that award would turn out. I know, I know. And her reviews were good but the movies kinda came and went. And wasn't she like the third/fourth co-lead in the movie? But they remembered her! OMG I love it. Ugh if only she had given a speech. This is such an exclusive club to be a member of, ugh, I wish this had been a moment for her like it was for Kiki.

Funny thing is, I knew most of these winners from an earlier pic report but since she wasn't there to accept, the only other female photo with a prize was of Alice Rohrwacher who I incorrectly assumed was some random European actress who snuck in there as a surprise win. Eyeroll @ the Timothy Spall win. C'mon now.

And I just KNEW Winter Sleep would get the big one despite the breathless raves for Leviathan. They always play musical chairs with that Palme D'Or when there's no runaway or buzzy newbie frontrunner.

The Xavier Dolan/Jean-Luc Godard tie is kinda of delicious for all sorts of reasons. And I didn't think for a moment they'd give Dolan the Palme, he's waaaaay too young and they still have a list of directors to cross off before they even think about it for him. Those rare kind of awesome shocker wins only happen when the film take the festival by storm, a la Pulp Fiction or Dancer in the Dark.

Okay, I'm still kinda freaking out over Goddess Julianne having a Cannes Best Actress award. WHAT. I dare you to say that aloud and not have a huge smile afterwards, fellow actressexuals. :D

May 25, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMark The First

Here's the wonderful list of elite actresses Our Goddess Julianne joins the ranks of:

Bette Davis, Lee Grant, Susan Hayward, Giulietta Masina, Bibi Andersson, Ingrid Thulin, Simone Signoret, Jeanne Moreau, Sophia Loren, Katharine Hepburn, Anne Bancroft, Vanessa Redgrave, Susannah York, Joanne Woodward, Shelley Duvall, Jill Clayburgh, Isabelle Huppert, Sally Field, Anouk Aimée, Isabelle Adjani, Hanna Schygulla, Helen Mirren, Norma Aleandro, Cher, Barbara Hershey, Meryl Streep, Irène Jacob, Holly Hunter, Brenda Blethyn, Kathy Burke, Émilie Dequenne, Björk, Kati Outinen, Maggie Cheung, Penélope Cruz, Carmen Maura, Lola Dueñas, Blanca Portillo, Jeon Do-yeon, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Juliette Binoche and Kikikikikiki.

Now, I haven't seen Moore's performance itself so it could fall under the Marie-Josée Croze/Bérénice Bejo/Virna Lisi subcategory of THIS IS WHAT WON AND THESE WERE MY OPTIONS?! but nonetheless it's a damn fine company of women to have been handed this honor. This is historic, ya'll. And she's only the 18th American to win this in their 67 years. lol

Ugh, I wish we had a speech to replay over and over and lull me to a happy sleep.

May 25, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMark The First

It's so wonderful for Julianne Moore! The festival trifecta is probably something that is more accomplished than even an Oscar statue, in which I am sure she will win one, someday. The role looks so juicy I can't wait to check it out.

And it's wonderful for Xavier Dolan too. I don't get all the snarky comments towards him, he's basically just a kid at 25 and has made wonderful films. Perhaps he lacks the typical hollywood etiquette? But then he doesn't even work in Hollywood. The shared price with Goddard is kind of strange but I really look forward to Mommy now given how much I loved I killed my mother. Anne Dorval was absolutely wonderful in it!

May 25, 2014 | Unregistered Commenternico

Sad Moore won when so many others are more deserving :(

May 25, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTrisha

VIRNA LISI is GREAT in QUEEN MARGOT, even if her role was supporting....after all you could say the same also about Julianne's role in MAPS

May 25, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMirko

Mirko -- 100% agree on Virna Lisi. I totally think she should have been nominated that year but then I am gaga for that movie in general

May 25, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Ulrich - thanks so much!

May 25, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRoark

Berenice bejo is great in The Past!

By the way, have you heard this, Leila Hatami is threatened with public whipping in Iran for kissing cannes president in the cheek...

May 25, 2014 | Unregistered Commentercraver

I donot know about you guys but I find myself disheartened when I read these comments passing judgements on films and performances that they themselves have yet to see. To already be dismissing a performance or film without having ever seen it just is so disrespectful toward the art of filmmaking and acting and is the equivalent of a slap to the face in my opinion. Furthermore, actresses like Kidman, Blanchett, Cotillard, and Moore are are like finding needles in a haystack. There is no need to pit them against each other. I am confident that they all respect each other's work. So as fans of theirs, can't we respectfully do the same and stop with the personal attacks? I know it is easy when you are behind a computer to spew hatred when you want, but just because you can does not mean you should.

What's the point of knocking someone whom you may see as a threat to your favored actress. Isn't it better that we should just enjoy them and their talents instead. Isn't that the problem with how American Cinema views women and how American society views women in general. Why is there to need to spit such vitriol when it comes to women. How is it there is such negativity towards the actresses and yet almost none against the men? I apologize if I had ranted on a bit.

May 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKai Lor

Mirko + NATHANIEL R

Virna Lisi is quite good in the role but giving her the prize over Isabelle Adjani makes zero sense to me, especially when Adjani does so much more with such a trickier character in a role that's in nearly every scene. I consider it a serious ball drop in that category's history. I mean, they obviously went out of their away to reward a veteran actress' work in the same film when they could've just given them both the prize. And if any international actress deserves to join the even more exclusive club of two-time Cannes Best Actress winners, it's Adjani doing career-best work in a film tailored to her strengths. But yeah, that movie in general is pure fabulousness.

craver -

We're gonna have to just disagree on that. Bejo winning is one of the most baffling wins to me, sorry. I know she has her growing group of fans but I'm not one of them. I find her unremarkable in many ways, actually

The Leila Hatami news sickens me. The fact that she even had to give a public apology despite it not being her fault speaks volumes to how those fundamental extremists treat women.
