Twins: Eva Green and...

each day at 2:22 a twin post dedicated to all you Geminis reading - one of us... one of us...!

Eva Green keeps winning the spotlight in 2014. In March she took every MVP notice for 300: Rise of an Empire (though I must ask 'was their competition for that title, really?). In May she headlined the premiere of the new Showtime series Penny Dreadful (which we briefly discussed here). Right on the heels of that her hotness made the MPAA all sweaty again (they freaked out over her film debut as well) and they vowed that her character poster for Sin City: A Dame To Kill For woudl never see the inside of theaters. They've since changed the poster to get it approved. (They are so reliably weird.)

Eva's fanbase is ever growing but she's still mysterious onscreen and off. Did you know she has a twin?

As an actress Eva is one of a kind, but she shared a womb. Eva began life two minutes before her sister Joy (they're non-identical) who is not in the entertainment business but works with horses. Here you can see a few photos of the very photogenic French family.

Joy, Dad, Mom, and Evathe twins with their momEva & Joy

I had no idea Eva was a twin but it adds a new unexpected layer of 'I'll do anything onscreen' daring to her debut as ½ of that incestuous twin pair (with Louis Garrell) who went all threeway to include Michael Pitt for The Dreamers

Have you ever seen The Dreamers? And are you watching Penny Dreadful?  I still can't decide if I like it but the most recent episode was so light on Eva's hypnotic actorly pyrotechnics (it's not like her to recede and let the other characters appear to be more interesting!) that my attention was totally fading until that twisty kiss at the episode's end.

Update! 06/05: Penny Dreadful has been renewed for a second season.

Eva Green is such a revelation on screen. The Best Bond Girl since forever (Diana Rigg) and the bright spot in Dark Shadows. It's nice to see her finally starting to do more work instead of the one-film-per-year she did some couple of years ago.

It's been a while since I last saw The Dreamers but circa 10 years ago I remember being quite taken with it, if only for the incandescence of Green's performance and the frank treatment of sex and nudity in the overall film. Given that Bertolucci's filmography includes such sexual touchstones as 1900 and Last Tango in Paris, the sexuality of The Dreamers probably shouldn't come as so much of a surprise. And yet American cinema continues to be starved of such sensual screen representations of sex and physical love. I had read somewhere that Leonardo DiCaprio and Jake Gyllenhaal both turned down/dropped out of the Michael Pitt role, which was probably for the best - neither would likely have committed to the required nudity of the part, and such modesty would have been distractingly out of place next to Garrell and Green's nonchalance.

The Dreamers is not that great, but Green is great in it, and holy shit is that one sexy sexy movie. So many beautiful young things prancing around in the nude. I just wish Bertolucci hadn't pussied out on having Pitt and Garrell's character get it on (as they do in the book).

Back on topic - it's very nice to see Green finally getting a well deserved moment in the sun. She has been stealing entire movies from much more established talent for years now. Has anyone seen Cracks? Also not a great movie, but she's really aces there, too.

I saw an interview she did with KTLA years ago to promote that Ridley Scott movie she did...and she smoked during it. But I guess the security in the building weren't thrilled so they kept interrupting and telling her to put it out, so she just got up and left. Very charming, nonetheless.

I discovered Eva Green through The Dreamers as I already knew that she had a twin while her mother is actually a famous actress during the days of the French New Wave. I'm glad she is getting some attention as she is an amazing actress and still, the best Bond girl.

It's not that I didn't like The Dreamers, but I felt it was too focused in the threesome instead of the period, May '68, which I found way more interesting and unexplored.

Louis Garrel has the most marvelous hair, don't you think?

The Dreamers: It's okay.

Penny Dreadful: I'm enjoying it. It's not a top tier show, or even a second tier show (yet). But it's hugely atmospheric, wonderfully lush, and quite well acted - Eva Green may be recessive in the most recent episode, but it's still a hugely witty performance (that opening scene outside the church). Reeve Carney does the bored, vacuous beauty thing quite well and giving Rory Kinnear this language?? Glorious.

I LOVE Eva Green. You think the combination of her beauty and that fantastic performance in James Bond years ago would have made her a bigger star by now.

Instead she's starting in showtime shows (two(!) since Casino Royale), and unneeded and unwanted prequels/sequels to ok films like 300 & Sin City. What the hell happened?! I really don't get it - at least she is shining regardless.

The Dreamers was such a complete letdown apart from every second Eva Green was onscreen and my mind just couldn't process any thoughts.

I quite liked The Dreamers despite its flaws and Eva was dazzling in it. She was also great in Casino Royale and simply amazing in Dark Shadows - she almost makes my Oscar ballot.

I loved The Dreamers but, hey, any chance to stare at that comely trio, I'll take. Forget Eva, whatever happened to Louis Garrell?

I think Eva is beautiful in just a slightly odd way. It makes her far more interesting looking that just another CW starlet.
