Thursday, July 31, 2014 at 12:13PM Well, this is unexpected. Just one day after releasing 10 new images, and an hour after posting about them, there's a teaser, too.
You'd think they'd want to space out the media attention since Christmas is still a long way away but we'll take it. As per usual, they're not quite admitting it's a musical yet in advertising. You hear the opening words "I wish..." of the prologue chorale number over and over again but nobody quite sings it as if the spirit of Rex Harrison has taken over. Anna Kendrick comes closest to sounding melodic while just speaking. But the teaser is enticing.
Come what may, for better and we-hope-not worse, it will be an event to see this musical on big screens during the holidays.

This teaser trailer does a real good job of actually teasing... Hope it's a big gift this Xmas and not a dud - but again it all looks and feels beautiful!

She's not in much of this teaser but #1 reason I'm excited about this is Emily Blunt.
So excited, looks beautiful. I hope Meryl slays but I'm nervous.
I am 1000% ok with their withholding of Johnny Depp. It gives (perhaps foolish) hope that they've actually got something worth a big reveal, and also I need a loooong break from him if I'm ever going to be excited to see him again.

I noticed they didn't add "and Nine" in the "from the director of" part.
Looks dark and spooky. Perfect.
I started dry heaving when the mention of Wicked came up. Wicked should never be mentioned around a Sondheim masterpiece.
It's a teaser, but I wished it teased us also with more of the music and the humor. It looks too serious based on this.
I think those orchestrations are pretty great. The singing will come in a full length trailer. Gotta tease with the design and cast first to get those "non-musical" people interested.

The stills look beautiful. But then Marshall films always look beautiful, that is one of his strong points, conception. He fails in execution.
The stills all look like those "decorator collector plates" that are meant to be hung on walls. Beautiful to look at, but pretty worthless. I also don't get Kendrick. The original Broadway Cinderella (Kim Crosby) had such a round, naturally beautiful voice--she looked and sounded like the perfect cream puff with a surprising spicy center--and I only get strident from Kendrick. The step-mother and daughters are worth the price of admission however. Lucy Punch is a dream in everything she does.
And it's worrying that they are removing the sexual undertones (a neutered wolf?). That was the entire point of the show. It's not meant for children.

I dunno, but I'm getting a serious Alice in Burtonland vibe. Not from the design of things itself (it's just the woods, really), but from the wholly artificial color scheme and the way that every surface seems coated in a thick layer of digital Vaseline. I've been down on this project from the very beginning, so maybe I'm just reading my own reservations into it. But I would at any rate absolutely not use the word "beautiful".
I'm not entirely convinced by this teaser, BUT so far it does appear to be a step up from Nine, so...

I'm incredibly excited! I'm digging everybody in the cast (even Depp's nails). It looks like it will be an event to experience, indeed.

How has no one commented on those orchestrations?! So lush, so full, so glorious! God I love Sondheim.
Tim Brayton, I'm actually okay with the stylized color scheme - it is meant to be a storybook adaptation, after all. My chief concern is with the singing and maintaining the darker edges of the story.
Disney better not screw this up. I still have scars from Sweeney Todd (which I still liked much more than most people did)
are you thinking about "Yes, No, Maybe So"ing this or shall we wait for the full trailer?
I can't help but get a little excited, the design is striking and I'm hoping that this film works as a whole. I may be in the minority here, but Nine did have a few good numbers.

@Tim Brayton--Thanks for the link. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I agree with your use of "Digital Vaseline" as a description.
I'm not convinced by this teaser that this will work. I think they are scared of the film, scared of calling it a musical (Weird. Especially after the success of Les Miz and the TV live events.) and scared of showing anything more than a couple of seconds per scene. The orchestrations are beautiful, but.............
Maleficent Part 2
I know everyone here is excited about this, but I don't know the original material (It is possible) and quite honestly I'm getting tired of having a Rob Marshall Oscar hopeful movie, he's just like the Christopher Nolan of musicals :), trying to repeat past glories. I like both of them enough, but I'd like to see them doing something different. Marshall gets good/great performances from his actors, why not a "regular" movie (=not musical, not a franchise) just a movie with real, next door people? It can't be so difficult to refrain the actors from bursting into singing ;)

It had everything I expected. (okay, I MIGHT have expected some singing, but I'm sure that will come soon)
Great colors, costumes, visual effects and score. Can't wait to see and hear more.
