Missy Elliott hasn't released an album in 10 years. 10 YEARS. She proves she's still got it in spades with this track WTF (Where They From).It's got everything: Hot dancing, inspired hair and makeup, best supporting visual fx, Charlie Kaufman like puppets, and boxes of people wrapped in plastic. I've watched this video a scary amount of times this week. Join me in obsessiveness.
Oscar Movements
The Oscar charts were updated before yours truly headed to Los Angeles for the AFI, the last festival stop that can significantly change things (the next festivals like Santa Barbara for example are just glorified campaigning & warm up acceptance speeches for actors who are already real contenders). But, in a minor twist, AFI didn't change things - no Selma or American Sniper bows to be seen. There were a few players getting little boosts: Will Smith has an outside shot at Best Actor if they a) don't like their current options and b) Concussion is a big hit at Christmas; The Big Short could be a Globe Comedy contender (given that meager field); and quite a few Foreign Oscar Submissions attracted more devout fans since AFI is the single best festival at which to see them. Why you may ask? Well, it plays a lot of the titles each year and it's also the only big festival that takes place between when the official submission list is announced and when the Academy members start voting towards the finalist list of nine, so it's ideally positioned to make a difference. Mustang (France's submission) won the Audience Award but several other notable contenders, Denmark's A War among them, also had filmmakers and/or actors in town for promotional (hint: Oscar courting) purposes.
And in news that you know warmed Nathaniel's heart, The HFPA has vetoed Category Fraud attempts by Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander in supporting. They'll have to compete in Lead Actress, Drama where they both 100% belong. This doesn't necessarily mean anything to the Oscar race where they've been pushed supporting thus far -- Oscar voters have never been required to vote in a specific way for a performance they like (unlike SAG & The Globes where the specific categories are decided for the voters before they nominate) and we've seen in the past that the media and (most shamefully) critics groups generally support / encourage Oscar to accept the fraudulent placement by the studios. But hopefully this is a bellwether for the future. Category Fraud has reached critical mass in the past dozen years and it's time to break it down.

When I saw that Missy Elliott video for the first time a few days ago, the first person I thought about was you Nathaniel lol. I agree that it's been way too long since we've heard some new Missy, but the song itself is a little underwhelming; here's hoping it grows on me.
The video though, is absolutely bananas (in a good way). I'm glad she's back to elevate the artform.
The Missy video is terrific. But more importantly, the Missy song is SICK!
And I have a ton of respect for the Globes (never thought I'd say that) for putting Mara and Vikander where they belong. Even if it doesn't change their categorization at the Oscars, at the very least there will be more names in play on Oscar nom morning. Could be great news for Joan Allen and Elizabeth Banks.
One of my big takeaways from AFI - and I'll happily admit I'm totally biased - is that Cynthia Nixon is getting serious buzz for James White. I really hope critics groups step up for her. I honestly think it's possible, and I'll be banging that drum til nomination morning, hopefully.
That Vogue interview of J-Law is so fun yet quite sad.

I am very glad that category fraud is being addressed,even if it may be at the expense of a Tomlin,Rampling or Blanchett not getting a nom,if it makes people rethink how campaigns are done then good stuff,Nat someone was reading.
I'm right there with you on Missy. The video is so in sync with her previous visual kookiness and I was so happy that her absence hasn't diluted that. My first reaction was that the song wasn't very catchy, but I was wrong and it's been stuck in my head since!

I just saw Youth and I really can't understand why Jane Fonda is considered a front-runner. Harvey Keitel I liked, and it was only in the last scenes that Michael Caine convinced me that he is nomination material.
Fonda is great,Caine also let me down,loved Weisz'smonologue.
I predict Vikander doesn't get nominated for an Oscar. Because of the end-of-the-year dump, this seems like one of those years, like 2013, that voters aren't going to watch a lot of films for a single performance, especially if the film looks dreary and it doesn't have significant critical or box office support. (I said the same thing about Mulligan.) The Danish Girl is getting lukewarm to mediocre reviews, and I don't see Redmayne making it at this point.
HPFA is a better awards body than they get credit for - just look at their best director nominees and winners over the past 15 years.
Wow, now I can count 10 legitimate contenders for Best Actress: Ronan, Rampling, Blanchett, Mulligan, Larson, Tomlin, Danner and Lawrence with Mara and Vikander adding to the race if/when they push others for the Golden Globe nominations and they start generating more real talk for the leading category

Blanchett is a Streep-level lock for a nomination. I don't believe Tomlin will make the final five. And Rampling deserves the fucking Oscar above every single actress competing for the award this year.
Nope, Blanchett is no lock. Maybe you wish she were but she ain't. One lock at this point - Larson who's terrific. Maybe Ronan as well. To me Mara is the more interesting player in Carol, the film's soul. And Cannes responded to that. I believe the Academy and Globe voters will, too. Vikander isn't in a bad position. She has a terrific year and maybe critics won't go crazy about the film but it's your The Reader. Which leaves Rampling who's legendary and overdue. Even Tomlin who's terrific in Grandma. Blanchett could very well miss.
The Reader got nominated for Best Picture (in a field of 5), Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography, in addition to Best Actress. It was a Weinstein power player that had the additional emotional punch of being the last film jointly produced by Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella before they died, and it starred two very respected long-time veteran actors in Winslet and Fiennes The Danish Girl isn't The Reader.
Actresses with big years sometimes don't get nominated. Chastain missed a nomination last year.
I really think that Blanchett is lock for a nomination. The heart of "Carol" are both women, so one without the other doesn't really work, at least in the novel.. So if Mara goes supporting she' ll win.

At least from anecdotal conversations from academy voters in Los Angeles this week, CAROL seems underseen actually. thus far. People keep talking about Brie Larson and Saoirse Ronan and everyone loves their movies. I'd say those two are in the best position right now both because of performance and widely seen widely loved films.
Does Roan have an advantage over Larson because she's a previous nominee in a softer prestige vehicle?
Wow, this is exciting!! The drama cat in GG is getting more competitive. If both Mara & Vikander are nom, Blanchett, Larson, Mulligan, JJL, Ronan & Rampling would be fighting for the final 3 spots...who'll prevail???
I believe now that Joy is shifted to drama cat, Tomlin is likely the winner in the com cat.
As for Oscar, they might likely follow GG's lead and not swayed by the cat fraud
That Variet story also says the Globes accepted The Martian as a comedy which ...what ? It had some funny bits I guess but in what world is it a comedy ?

Oh man, Tremblay's idea for the ending of "Room" is quite brilliant, actually, but I don't know if I could've handled it. I was practically bawling through that movie as it was.
