ITA Nathaniel, Batman Returns is still the best Batman movie I've ever seen and I even prefer Batman Forever to the current state of joyless comic book films. Also, even though she's totally a lead in Batman Returns, I think Pfeiffer should have EASILY won Best Supporting Actress in 1992 given 1) there's been much worse category fraud 2) villains are almost always campaigned as supporting and 3) Marisa Tomei.

Sadfleck.... I wanna give Ben Affleck a hug as I think he's just going through a tough time now w/ his split with Jennifer Garner and the pressures in delivering a big hit for DC. Besides, I'm sure this isn't the worst thing he's done. The worst thing he done is Pearl Harbor.

Steph: There's been great movies with Batman's name or nickname in the title (Returns, The Dark Knight), but there's not really been a fully on-point film adaptation. (Let's take Batman Returns for an example: In an even close to on-point adaptation of Batman 5 things, 1. Everything about Penguin would become Killer Croc. 2. The Max Schreck stuff would be pretty much eliminated, because 3. This is so far off point that Catwoman's motivation is murder and mayhem. 4. Batman shouldn't kill people, especially not smiling about it (And, yes, that includes the central villain) and 5. Bad freaking costume, so stiff that it forces a near exclusive focus on gadgetry.) The closest, and best, adaptation is still the 90s Animated Series. ("Good night, humanitarian.")

10 of 18 re: Lee Pace's filmography. The Fall and Soldier's Girl are both immensely impressive, and Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day is the kind of thing that I'm always delighted to watch when I remember it.

Lee Pace posterized: I've seen 9.
But there are at least a dozen movies where I've mentally recast Lee Pace in the role. I don't understand why he isn't at the top of every casting director's list. So gorgeous, so talented, so interesting.

Batman Returns meh. Just never really bought into the Burton-verse, especially the villains. Sorry.

March 27, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

Paul Outlaw: I can buy that. All of the Burton-Schumacher era villains are, in some way, BAD adaptations of those villains. Of the 7, four are let down by how massively inaccurate they portray core concepts (Riddler is mostly Mad Hatter and Hugo Strange in a blender and should have been one of those two, Penguin is Killer Croc, Two-Face flips his coin multiple times to get his result and Catwoman is motivated by murder and psychosis) and the other three (Joker, Freeze, Ivy) are at the core accurate, but they're still disappointing-bad versions of those characters.

March 27, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Truth be told, Batman Returns is actually a Catwoman movie. And more importantly it's a Michelle Pfeiffer movie.

March 27, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterKL

KL: It's only a Penguin/Catwoman movie in the sense that characters called that are onscreen. Definitely a DeVito/Pfeiffer movie, though.

Exactly, Volvagia.
