TIFF '24: "The End" of the World is a Marvelous Musical Mess

Ambitious mess will always be more exciting and artistically valuable than cautious mediocrity. The timid filmmaker has their place, but they'll never rise above those whose ideas reach for the sky, the heavens, the likely impossible. Or, in Joshua Oppenheimer's case, those who burrow down below, digging to the center of the Earth, mayhap to hell. The Lead Actor in a Limited Series race has only gotten more competitive throughout the year. Evan Peters performance as the titular character in Netflix's Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story was pegged as the early frontrunner in this race. He now faces off against recent Oscar nominee Steven Yeun for the critically acclaimed Netflix show Beef. Other challengers are also very much in the hunt. Who is going to take home the win? Reviews: "Bullet Train" and "Thirteen Lives"

Whenever we're about to go thumbs down on two movies, we feel the need to reiterate that we genuinely love the cinema. Even when we don't love a movie, we're (usually) glad we went. But sometimes you want to love a movie (Thirteen Lives), and it just isn't worthy. Other times you go in, fully expecting a great love (Bullet Train) but the movie is too narcissistic and cocksure to even notice you're watching it in time to love you back...

Interview: Michael Shannon on his new Hulu series “Nine Perfect Strangers”

Michael Shannon's onscreen career deserves more recognition. Yes, he is a two-time Oscar nominee thanks to Revolutionary Road and Nocturnal Animals, but he wasn’t even nominated for his best roles, including Take Shelter, 99 Homes, The Shape of Water, and The Iceman. He also deserved Emmy recognition for his first regular TV role on Boardwalk Empire, which he strangely didn’t get. 

Now, the talented always busy actor of stage and screen, who at one point debuted a whopping ten films in a single year (2016), is returning to television for the limited series Nine Perfect Strangers, based on the book by Liane Moriarty, author of Big Little Lies...
