Reviews: "Bullet Train" and "Thirteen Lives"

Whenever we're about to go thumbs down on two movies, we feel the need to reiterate that we genuinely love the cinema. Even when we don't love a movie, we're (usually) glad we went. But sometimes you want to love a movie (Thirteen Lives), and it just isn't worthy. Other times you go in, fully expecting a great love (Bullet Train) but the movie is too narcissistic and cocksure to even notice you're watching it in time to love you back...

Doc Corner: Andrea Arnold's 'Cow' and more at Hot Spring Documentary Film Festival

I recently ‘visited’ Arkansas of all places (virtually, of course) to sit on a jury for America’s longest-running documentary film festival. I got to judge on the 2021 Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival’s international jury with Andria Wilson Mirza and Jesse Knight and the three of us awarded the International Documentary Feature Grand Jury Prize (phew!) to Andrea Arnold’s Cow with an honourable mention to Ali El Arabi’s Captains of Zataari. The U.S. Documentary Feature Grand Jury Prize went to Angelo Madsen Minax's excellent North by Current, which we looked at earlier in the year.

So for this week’s column I wanted to look at a selection of the titles from songstresses in Cuba, professional wrestlers in Mexico and, yup, that damn cow.

"Belfast" is TIFF's choice. How far can it go with Oscar?

It's been strange to have gone without TIFF, my once favourite festival, for two years running. As a result i have yet to see Kenneth Branagh's Belfast which did not play at Venice though its Oscar buzz is now quite loud. It recently won TIFF's People's Choice Award which has long been a strong Oscar bellwether. We'd argue that that connection is less causal than reflective of a "similar taste profile", though. The type of people who go to huge and accessible film festivals are not unlike Oscar voters in that their tastes lean mainstream but mainstream under the now niche umbrella (sigh) of "also art"...
