Playlist on the complicated issues of "separate the art from the artist" in today's social media court of public opinion and 24/7 news cycles and Birth of a Nation's release
Gold Derby titles their article "OFFICIAL" and then claims to have inside intel on "hints" that Silence is actually opening this year despite no poster, trailer, release date, etcetera. This is not what the word "official" means. It will only be official when Paramount makes a statement. I'm hopeful, as the film has been in post forever, but it's definitely not official yet.

The New Yorker has an interesting take on Bridget Jones's Baby's refusal to engage with some of the elements of the genre it helped define
Variety Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal will co-star in a movie called Wildlife based on the novel by Richard Ford about a boy witnessing his parent's marriage falling apart. The fun (?) part is that it's cowritten by real life couple Zoe Kazan and Paul Dano who we hope aren't falling apart. Dano will also direct

The New Yorker looks back at the obsessive photographer behind iconic 50s magazine Physique Pictorial - was he the early Robert Mapplethorpe or the gay Hugh Hefner?
Boy Culture Madonna reads ageist commenters to filth on her Instagram account. I have loved this woman so much and for so long that I find a kind of regular joy that she's so endlessly superior to all the litte minds that have been trying to bring her down for the past 32 years. But on the other hand, probably best for celebrities not to acknowledge all the people that hate them. Don't give them that power!

All Madonna needs now is a really great album as it's looking likely that GaGa is not Madonna's heir as has been said in the media.
Nat: If Silence doesn't lock down a schedule in a week or two, it's next year.
The Playlist article is very welcome. It correctly identifies the difficulties and complexities in the issue. I count Woody Allen and Roman Polanski among my favourite filmmakers, and I have struggled a fair bit with the degree to which one should or should not separate the art from the artist. This article provides some level-headed analysis.
@ Edward L.
But she kinda lost credibility with me right off the bat, comparing Paris Hilton and her "work" to Wagner and Picasso and their masterpieces...
@ Paul Outlaw: I read that bit as a rather sardonic joke; and the humour in the article helped ease me into what is a very tricky topic.
Paul & Edward - i read that as a joke, too.
I believe that but it's a little clumsy.
Jake should be naked in every movie he makes...the artist's "sins" should no cloud our judgment of their art but sometimes this is not easy.
@Paul Outlaw definitely clumsy, and it seemed to be the only joke in an otherwise very serious article.
Thank you for posting that article. This morning, I was just discussing my consternation regarding Birth of a Nation. I don't take rape lightly as a subject; I've met far too many women (many of those friends) who have been victims of rape to ignore the fact that the accusations are there and he can't deny them. Also, his attempts to skirt the issue just sours my tastes for Nate Parker as a man as well. Even though he was younger when this event occurred, the rape culture is still too prevalent to let him slip past. I just wish his film were not so relevant in regards to race and the similarities with modern America.
I don't want to forgive his actions, but I also don't want to miss a film regarding Nat Turner. I really wish he had directed a film with less cultural significance so I could forget about it. I've been told by one friend that giving money to this movie is morally wrong due to his crimes, but at the same time, what if it were a different crime? If he had gotten away with murder and still made this movie, would we be having this conversation? And what about all of the other people who worked on the movie? The actors and crew who had no link to his history: should they be punished for his past indiscretions.
It's a definite quandry, and I still intend to see it, but I greatly appreciate the last paragraph in the article. I can debate this topic endlessly, but sometimes, you just don't know. Thanks for listening.
