Natalie Portman will join Sally Field as a Best Actress Pet from two wins that causes Nick Davis to question the taste of the consensus. 2/3 with one of their nominations in supporting.
Nick Davis is impossible to predict. He can be very fickle, but I do love his charm.
I am in shock you didn't love Toni Erdmann. It's not a sitcom! It's a deep and beautiful movie about people who discover they love each other by attacking each another. I don't remember having seen a movie digging so deep into the notion of embarassment and exasperation family ties can bring, and, in the same time, highlighting the indelible of connection of two members of the same family, even when they don't connect. This whole thing is made with woderful characterizations, perfect timimg comedy and moving and truly original vision. That hug in the park, oh GOD! And the performances! The screenplay! In my opinion this is truly a gem, and a serious contender for movie of the decade. So sad you didn't connect with it!

Toni Erdmannn definitely not a sitcom. A great drama with cringe comedy elements that could lose 10-20 minutes.
I kind of love that you guys don't have any concensus except Moonlight this year.
But Toni Erdmann as mere sitcom? Girl. Name me a movie that nails corporate culture better since at least Margin Call.
I do wish "Toni Erdmann" had more going on visually, but then again, it's such a performance piece and the performances are beyond superb.
Paul & Euro -- i didn't say "a bad sitcom" -- some sitcoms are pretty great. but it's more sitcom season than movie. sorry.
I know, Nat--but if it were a sitcom, I would never watch it...way too long, and not too funny...
I'm intrigued by Joe Reid's observation that a "best actress" film is a kiss of death on a film's chances to gain a broad range of Oscar nominations. Not sure about this since Room did pretty well across a number of categories last year.
I'm glad that I wasn't the only one underwhelmed by "Jackie".
Brownie points to Nathaniel for carefully pronouncing Denis Villeneuve's name correctly. I would love to see Villeneuve get a best director nomination, I enjoyed Arrival so much.

Love the topic about giving second chances to movies you didn't initially liked. The perfect example for me was Beginners back in 2011, which I barely liked when I first saw it in theaters.However, since it enjoyed such an effusive reception, I felt I owed it a second try. It took me by surprise that I loved it on 2nd viewing, and then 3rd, 4th, 5th, and so on. It was really a 180 degree turn with that movie and me. I now love it and actually watch clips of it every once in a while. Similarly, I went into 20th Century Women wondering if I would have that same reaction to it, and what do you know––I didn't like it. But it's on my rewatch list. Maybe I'm doomed to not like Mike Mills movies on first viewing.
@Ryan: I'm going to take that as a compliment! I always like when I can't guess someone's reaction in advance to a movie. But I will hope to be refreshing-unpredictable, not exasperating-unpredictable.

re: Erdman, my mom hated this movie and I kinds think she was right when she explained why.
Personally, I thought it was OK but long.
No sitcom I know has masterful directing and editing like Toni Erdmann. Really surprised about you putting it down as a movie. The cinematography, directing and editing aren't OH MY GOD SHOWY so I guess that could generate the TV connection, but I still find it very odd.
