Let the new "Girls Trip" teaser be a salve for your weary spirit
Robert here! Boy, these are some trying times to be alive and conscious in the world. Luckily no matter what shenanigans are going on in Washington, Hollywood continues to churn out entertainment to allow us a few hours of blissful ignorance to the outside world. In the spirit of that I present to you the first teaser trailer for Girls Trip, in theathers July 21st. The film is a raunchy R-rated comedy starring Queen Latifah and front woman of the nu metal band Wicked Wisdom, Jada Pinkett Smith, along with criminally underused comedians Regina Hall and Tiffany Haddish. Check out the trailer and more details about the film after the jump...
Girls Trip centers on a group of four friends traveling to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival, and from the look of the teaser, things get fairly wild! There are hot men, there are day-glo wigs, there is lots of alcohol, zip lining over Bourbon Street, and "Hennessy and booty sweat." The teaser refreshingly holds its cards close to its chest unlike some that just rattle of the film's seven good jokes. Just based on what we've seen, though, it definitely has the possibility to be a perfect summer Saturday afternoon sitting in an air conditioned movie theater cackling at the screen and throwing Thin Mints in your mouth. The last time I experienced this unbridled pleasure was with The Heat. I'm due for a re-up!
In addition to the pedigree of the four main actresses, the film is directed by Malcolm D. Lee who recently had critical and huge commercial success with The Best Man Holiday and directed one of my favorite films of the early-aughts, Undercover Brother. Blackish creator Kenya Barris co-wrote the script with Karen McCullah, Racy Oliver, and Erica Rivinoja.
The movie will serve as a cinematic reunion of Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith, who co-starred in the '90s classic Set It Off, which I watched twenty minute chunks of on Starz several times when I was akid. It is also the the fourth collaboration between director Malcom D. Lee and Regina Hall. Strange fact: Lee directed the commedia dell'arte classic Scary Movie 5, which is the only film in the Scary Movie franchise that Hall did not star in.
Please save us Girls Trip, you're our only hope!

I reminisce about Set It Off FREQUENTLY... four true movie stars, yet arguably only one (Latifah) ever succeeded in the way they all should have.
I miss Kimberly Elise (surely a Top 50 contender for Best Working Actress without an Oscar nomination)
I unashamedly love Jada Pinkett Smith (after Boyz In The Hood I can forgive her almost any questionable choices)
I didn't realise I missed Vivica A. Fox until she popped up on Empire (she has such PRESENCE on the screen and it never fully translated into stardom like it should have).
I'm a "yes" for this, by the way...
In fact, Kimberly Elise missing a nomination for Beloved (and for that matter, it missing in Best Picture, Actress, Supporting Actress for Newton, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography... I could go on and on. Much maligned masterpiece and a true companion to the novel)

Smith was in Menace II Society. Regina King and Nina Long are in Boyz N The Hood.
Elise is owed two nominations. One for Beloved and one for For Colored Girls. But this looks fun.
Regina King is 46 years old, something I had to remind myself repeatedly when I watched People Places Things in which she plays the mother of a college student portrayed by Jessica Williams.
Queen Latifah took such risks early in her career before she became a brand name. I do wish she'd regularly return to that Set It Off level of commitment to the craft.

She was topless in Bessie. How much further could she go? Remember, Set It Off is atypical of material commissioned for nonwhite actresses.
I thought I was the only one that loved Regina Hall! She and Anna Faris were the only great thing of those Scary Movie franchises... it did hold on whenever these two actresses were still in the films, but after they both left, in number V, it became unfunny and frankly unwatchable. The continuous resurrections of Hall's character were a quite nice running joke.
3rtful - of course, I was picturing Jada in Menace II Society but was also daydreaming about Tyra Ferrell in Empire, hence the mix-up... I am an idiot...
Set It Off is such a classic, ugh
