by Nathaniel R

Isabelle Huppert as "Madame Hyde"

The Locarno Film Festival wrapped up today in Switzerland and guess who's back for yet more film honors? Isabelle Huppert, that's who! In the new French film Madame Hyde she plays an eccentric teacher who is struck by lightning. When she wakes she, well, the title will probably cue you in to her sudden split personality. I just heard about Madame Hyde with NYFF, but Isabelle Huppert as a female version of that character feels like the best casting ever.

I've never heard about this project before, but the mere idea of Huppert playing this role feels like heaven.

Could she ever be stopped? The fact that she's already winning prizes AGAIN indicates that it may crossover? Only Adjani, Loren and Cotillard got two nominations in foreign language movies, right? Back to back nominations for Huppert may seem impossible, but Huppert as Ms Hyde already sounds like it's own reward.

Huppert for Oscar gets my vote:)

So happy to hear of Huppert's win for Serge Bozon's Madame Hyde. Early buzz of the film was a bit mixed: Bozon's idiosyncratic storytelling approach and deconstruction of genre had critics divided. But the one undisputed consensus is la reine Isabelle's slayage as the title character.

Although her name in the film is Marie Géquil which rhymes with Jekyll, a lot of reviews mentioned that Bozon's adaptation of R L Stevenson's story was loose. Very loose. But imagining Huppert doing this role is already mindblowing. Hope this film gets attention everywhere (and she frankly does not need an Oscar nomination for validation, yes?). But if not, I like that Huppert just continues to perform excellently and prolifically and with a different film collaborator each time.

@cal roth .. Liv Ullmann also received two foreign language noms.. wish Huppert gets another nod this year for this or happy end.
