Nathaniel's "Extra" Prizes: Musical Moments, Action Sequences, and Best Endings

As the Oscar aftermath is just about over, we return you to the in-progress Film Bitch Awards. We hate to not be done with these before the Oscars - argh - but these things happen. We'll finish up soon as there's now just 5 (gulp) categories left.

Scene Awards
Musical moments, thrilling action sequences, opening scenes and great endings, and the like. There's lots to reminisce about but obviously there are spoilers for some 2018 scenes, particularly given the "endings" category. Films honored include but are not limited to: Ant-Man and the Wasp, The Children Act, Cold War, Eighth Grade, Isle of Dogs, Old Man and the Gun, Paddington 2, Vice, and You Were Never Really Here. Check it out.

No scenes from Annihilation? The mutated bear in the house, Tessa Thompson and the flowers, the fight with the humanoid at the end??

I know there's a bad tendency on the internet to just mention the things you disagree with rather than complimenting the overall work, but: wow the ending to "First Reformed" was awful.

I'm sorry but how do you talk about best action scenes and not have READY PLAYER ONE? The opening race/demolition derby is one of the most thrilling things Spielberg has ever orchestrated. And we're talking about SPIELBERG here.

Yesss! Can’t wait for your Top 10!

Omg, when ever I see a gif or screenshot of that Rose scene from ASIB i keep thinking "You're in a room full of gays and drag queens! Why do you have those brows?! Why are they LETTING you have those brows, sis?!?"

Love LOVE the description of Shallow: Supernova indeed.

Small correction: That's Joe in the court dance with Rachel in The Favourite.

Finally, some love for How to Talk to Girls at Parties.

February 28, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterthevoid99

That song is my favorite moment in How to Talk to Girls at Parties. So good.

Jonathan -- i hated Ready Player One. I couldn't follow anything visually it was so chaotic.

February 28, 2019 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Wow, I'm surprised. Did you see it in 3D? I found it fully coherent in regular 2D projection. In fact I don't think I've ever had issues with Spielberg's action choreography - it's always so lucid.

Chris - She's channeling Piaf

I love that you have Solo v. Chewie in the action sequences. Despite all the hate piled upon SOLO, I thought it was super fun, and Chewie was one of the main reasons. (Plus, it should have won the Visual Effects Oscar...!).

Oof, how do you choose between the dance scene in The Favourite and the I've Never Been to Me scene? Both were so good. These extra awards pick up some great moments.

That said, and I also hate to be that guy, but I'm with Dave S. on the ending of First Reformed.

The dance scene in The Favourite is my favorite scene of the year. It's hilarious and beautiful and mesmerising to start with and then quite moving at the end. Plus it tells you so much about the characters, their psychologies and dynamics... AND it even manages to advance the political side of the plot a bit. That's how you do it!

February 28, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterCarlos

Dave S.: I loved it! Heaven welling up on earth. Don't think about story sense - think about the swoon of it, after what Toller was just going through.

SanFran Cinema: Agreed! I liked Solo a lot!

Nathaniel: That BlacKkKlansman dance sequence is a wonderful choice.

Wow! Not a single nomination for Green Book!

February 28, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMarcos

remy—and doing a fabulous job! Killing it!

The Shallow song performance is the scene of the year for me, followed closely by the escape sequence in The Old Man & the Gun. I also really liked Regina King taking off her wig before the big confrontation scene in If Beale Street Could Talk.

What do you think of the shopping-for-crib scene?

February 28, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterRicopolo

Shoplifters' beach scene > Roma's beach scene

Also, Nobuyo and Shota's interviews!*

I'm waiting for the top 10 and acting Film Bitch Awards.

Specially i am curious how will happened with the 3 women of The Favourite.

Personally i would just put Weisz and Colman (in that order) both in the leading category and Toni Collette as #1 for Hereditary

Blindspotting

So happy to see the great escapes scene on here. Redord went out in a blaze of movie star fun, and I'm glad this scene was recognized. Such a great choice!

I would have included the Majong scene from Crazy Rich Asians and the Nobel being awarded scenes as well. Those two scenes have yet to leave my mind.

March 1, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

Yay - some love for Paddington 2 - best opening and closing scenes, as judged by my tears. (I've watched this movie at least 1x a week in 2019).

March 1, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterRebecca

Arlo -- i did like ANNIHILATION and those are good scenes yes. Probably should have included the bear scene which absolutely terrified me. But at last Annihilation got 3 nominations: Visual Effects, Production Design, and Best Credit Sequence Design

March 1, 2019 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Just adding that Can You Ever Forgive Me had really great scenes—it's just great scene after great scene so I'd have trouble picking one. Heller/Holofcenter do "scenes" very well.

The literary party was great. The literary office scene was great. The courtroom. The reunion feat. Anna Deavere Smith. The final meeting at Julius's.
