Though they didn't hit the top five among limited releases both Olivier Assayas's Non-Fiction and Zhang Yimou's Shadow opened with decent per screen averages in very limited release so expect them to expand a bit soon. Meanwhile Claire Denis's High Life just crossed the million dollar mark making it her biggest hit in the US since Chocolate back in 1989.
Avengers Endgame is already the 2nd biggest film of all time globally (not adjusted for inflation) having beaten Titanic's total gross this weekend by just a single million at this writing. Only Avatar remains to be conquered.

I saw endgame this weekend but I felt it was infinity war redux. Not a bad film, but not great either.
I miss the time when Titanic was the undisputed nummer one.
The Magnificent Ambersons on Netflix. My first Agnes Moorehead — that breakdown scene was great!
I miss the time when it was almost impossible to cross $500 mil domestic. Before the Disney/Marvel takeover. Sigh.
I saw "Kalank", an epic period melodrama from Bollywood. It's a sweeping family saga set in 1940's India just before the partition. To me it seemed like an Indian "Gone with the Wind". The romance is swoon-worthy, music out of this world, performances (especially by leading lady Alia Bhatt) tremendous. Sets are colossal, costumes stunning. It's just a shame that Oscar continues to ignore Bollywood films. Certainly in the visual and musical categories Hollywood will have to go some to surpass "Kalank" this year.

A couple of re-watches of Honeymoon in Vegas and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and first-timers in an episode of 30 for 30 in The Dominican Dream, At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastic Scandal (fuck you Larry Nasar), and just now, Queen of the Desert by Werner Herzog (it's alright).

Moorehead was terrific in Ambersons, wasn't she? I know Oscars are not everything, but she deserved the damn thing that year.

Thanks for letting us know about Kalank. The trailer promises something Western critics would hate and I would absolutely love. Cannot wait to see it.
Not surprised Long Shot tanked. It’s premise and leads are unappealing.
I saw "Avengers: Endgame" which is a long satisfying film which tries to be more than just a super hero movie. Chris Hemsworth is a true movie star he is appealing no matter what shape he is in- and Chris Pratt better watch out he is not just on the same star level. Ms Marvel is not only a dull character but Brie Larsen does not have the star charisma to pull it off. And I guess gay and Latino characters are not part of the Marvel universe unless they are minor supporting characters- "Shazam" the real Captain Marvel movie felt more inclusive.
A Chorus Line (1985) - dancing is great but the singing wasn’t and the acting very so so. Why did Richard Attenborough (or anyone else) think that he was suited to direct this?
I finally caught High Tide starring Judy Davis. She has three teary monologues and a striptease scene, but I don't get her National Film Critics Award in such a crowded year as 88.
It's inflation plus Disney hegemony, not just one or the other.
Endgame was at best watchable...nothing terribly exciting....and Brie Larson has zero charisma in that role. Zero.
High Life. Mesmerizing.
I watched Zac Efron's Ted Bundy Netflix movie. Probably his best performance. Film was ok. Not terrible. Not great.
Ducked the movie theater this weekend and saw Anthony Chen's Ilo Ilo (2013). Singapore's entry to the Oscar's best foreign language film. I like domestic dramas that can hold your attention despite (or because of) the cramped spaces of home. Though not like The Scent of Green Papaya, the intimate depiction of the dwelling has the magic of Tran Anh Hung's film. Yann Yann Yeo is wonderful as the house's matriarch who has to navigate the complicated spaces of home and work and her relationship with the lived-in maid.
Next in my cue is Edward Yang's modern classic Yi Yi.
I've been watching and rewatching the George Cukor movies featured on Criterion Channel, including Dinner at 8, which I saw for the first time in almost 30 years. Despite that time lapse, I remembered quite a bit from it pretty vividly. Its parts work a lot better than its whole (I kind of wish it were just a straight comedy because it's so funny at times), but it has some great performances from Jean Harlow, Billie Burke, and Marie Dressler - a murderer's row of supporting actressing.
I also watched Knock Down the House on Netflix, which is interesting if you want a behind-the-scenes view of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The filmmakers were lucky to follow her campaign from its beginning.
Amazing Grace is not to be missed. Aretha at her peak--and those are some lofty heights.
I, Daniel Blake - jeez, could it be more depressing? I was hoping for A Man Like Ove vibe, but no. Ken Loach film, after all.
Calendar Girls - because I needed more Yorkshire.. Amazing that all those actresses are still working regularly.
Couple episodes of Dead to Me on Netflix. Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini are such reliable TV actors; I always appreciate their performances.
Line of Duty Season 5 finale. Ugh, so unsatisfying. It's no Happy Valley.
"Ask Dr. Ruth" - nothing innovative about the documentary, but she's a wonderful subject. I would have liked more info about her actual career - I felt it went in-depth into her personal history and short-handed various controversies or events in her career, such as her response to the AIDS crisis, and would have preferred more detail.
If any movie musical should be remade is the awful "A Chorus Line" nothing in it works well ok maybe some of the dancers- but everything else from casting to choreography to direction stinks
Jaragon -- totally. On the other hand maybe it wasn't meant to be a film. It works so much beter as a stage show being about the theater and using the audience as kind of like producers/unseen director/future audience.
I finally saw Vice as it was the last major Oscar nominee I hadn't seen. I had low expectations and it was...fine? Some parts were funny and well-done, other parts were boring or self-indulgent. As for the actors, Bale's performance seems to consist of 3 things: talk out the side of your mouth, take a breath in the middle of every sentence, use your Batman voice. And that's it. The script doesn't dive very deep so neither does Bale, but an Oscar nom? I think the credit really goes to the amazing makeup work.
And Adams was fine. Totally serviceable. Nothing special. A lazy nomination.
