Yes No Maybe So: "Gemini Man"

Let's do a Yes No Maybe So on a strangely under the radar film (given the names involved). When Nathaniel put out the call for more trailer coverage, I though I'd give the Gemini Man trailer a second look because honestly, when I saw the trailer in theaters I was completely confused. This is not what I expected as a next step for either Ang Lee or Will Smith, two names none of us might have ever thought to link. If I had predicted them working together, I would not have pictured a somber sci-fi action film.

Ang Lee. Listen, Billy Lynn aside, Lee has a remarkable track record. He’s actually my favorite living director and one thing he consistently manages to tease out from his films – whether it’s flying over the trees practicing martial arts, staring at the lonely Wyoming hills or buzzing through a 70s swingers party in the suburbs – is a palpable sense of soul within the characters. I wouldn’t have expected him to take on Jane Austen or Woodstock with the same flair, but he did. No director has a perfect filmography, but more than most, Lee finds a way to hit his emotional mark. Can he find a way to do that here?

Isn't the concept a bit been there /done that? Looper did a fine job with a similar concept, and this looks like a mix of that film with a bit of I, Robot and Bourne Identity thrown in. With a theme like this you need lots of creativity, but from what's on view in the trailer it looks more derivative than original.

Will Smith honestly doesn’t look that old. Was CGI Will Smith necessary? It’s hard to focus on a plot when you can’t stop staring to see what they did to him.

Speaking of our leading man, I personally prefer wise-cracking blockbuster Will Smith over serious-faced, brow-furrowed Will Smith in his action films. He’s certainly had solid moments in serious roles, but hopefully the film takes advantage of the joy he's often been able to bring to audiences. We only see extreme self-seriousness here. Here’s hoping they have some fun with the doubled-up concept.

Looks like something Bruce Willis would have done in 1997.
Will Smith has aged so well that I wouldn't understand the concept by just watching the trailer, so I doubt those who don't know about the movie beforehad will. I'm disinterested.
Nothing on Mary Elizabeth Winstead? Her casting in this film (and the opportunity to work with a top-tier director like Ang Lee) got me really excited. Hope it leads to bigger, better things.

The trailer reminds most of Arnold Schwarzenegger's "The 6th Day"... so... no.
Love Ang Lee , but cannot deal with Will Smith.
I'm going with a maybe for this one as I do like Ang Lee a lot though I think we can all agree that Billy Lynn was shit. I would say it's Lee's worst film.

I'm a maybe. I never saw Billy Lynn, but it cannot possibly be worse than Hulk.
The horrible CGI turns me off this movie completely. Doesn't the director or the producers realize we know what Will Smith looked like when he was younger, we have the theme song to "Fresh Prince" memorized, we still believe parents just don't understand? The title is generic, the story is generic, but the special effects are memorably horrible. I watched the trailer a week or so ago and kep thinking, couldn't they at least make "younger" Will Smith look like a human being?
I really think that Billy Lynn is one of Lee's best movie. It was second on my best of the year list that year.
How lucky we are as a filmgoing audience to get two bad CG versions of Will Smith in one year between this and Aladdin.
I might have been a yes had the trailer not given away what looks to be the major plot point (his being hunted by his younger clone), but now I'm like, "eh."
No. Nope. Uh-uh.
What’s the image of Will Smith that I can’t shake?
Will Smith lobbied hard for his dramatic breakthrough in “Six Degrees of Separation”. But after he finally won the role (presumably over actors with more talent, artistic integrity, originality, but less of “a name”), Smith refused to do the scene where he kissed another man. This was on the advice of Denzel Washington, who told him it would damage his career. Shouldn’t have taken the job if you weren’t going to do it, Will!
This has made me always look askance at both these actors, and eye-roll when they try to talk about their artistic commitment.
But it’s “Men in Black” that finally killed any tolerance in me for Will Smith. These are fun movies (Linda Fiorentino, Rosario Dawson, Tommy Lee Jones!). I’ve seen these over and over, they’re always playing.
But suddenly I hit a point where I couldn’t stand to look at Will Smith and his immense self-satisfaction for even a minute. It’s like that moment that you look at your ridiculous, entitled, mediocre boss and realize that you’re quitting your job.
Kill it with fire.
