Streaming Roulette: Monstrous Kaitlyn, Shifty William H, and Ubiquitous Sharon
After the jump you'll find a listing of everything that's new to streaming this month (October 2020). But first we pick two handfuls of titles and we just randomly freeze them with the scroll bar. Whatever comes up is what we share. Do these images make you want to see (or rewatch) the movie?

Dick Johnson is Dead (2020) on Netflix
Filmmaker Kirsten Johnson dramatizes her father's death in multiple ways to help them both prepare for it. Glenn reviewed this buzzy new documentary for us in his weekly column.
Nononononononono. That's not how we're going to talk to one another. I will not be that guy. You cannot put me in that category: the biological father I spend every other week with and I make polite conversation while he drives me places and buys me shit."
Boyhood (2014) on Criterion Channel
Uff Ethan Hawke is so great in this movie, don't you think? What an interesting career he's had, all told. Much more interesting than it looked like it was going to be in the 90s.
...Mister Lundegaard?
Fargo (1996) on Netflix
William H Macy's best performance. A deserved Oscar nomination but, alas, in the wrong category.
When I first auditioned I had a big monologue on being anorexic. And then I think once they decided to cast me, that is when they made race her issue. But for me I was like. 'I don't have an issue' I didn't think it was a big enough problem for her to have although in retrospect, I actually think it's fantastic they had it in.
Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror (2019) on Prime
Documentary on black people in horror films. Glenn wrote about this film in Doc Corner earlier this year.

Monsterland (2020) season 1 on Hulu
Kaitlyn Dever is in this? Sold. Don't need anything else to sample it. 1996 is proving to be a ridiculous vintage for actors. We already have Florence Pugh, Zendaya, and Dever staking legitimate claims on the "Most Talented Actor Born in 1996" crown. Plus Lucas Hedges, Tom Holland, Harris Dickinson, Anya-Taylor Joy, Hailee Steinfeld. Who knows who else might turn up since none of these people are even 25 years old yet and lots of great actors don't show themselves until their late 20s or early 30s...
Four shootings in five years. All accidents?
Basic Instinct (1992) on Netflix
Do you ever get the feeling looking at streaming lists that the major services only have a rotation of like 200 movies from a a century plus of cinema, even though there are thousands upon thousands per decade available to them. Point being: this one is ALWAYS on somewhere. Sharon Stone did that.
But he that hath the steerage of my course, direct my sail.
Romeo + Juliet (1996) on Hulu
The Film Experience didn't exist in 1996 so y'all don't know how hopelessly obsessed I was with this movie at the time. o-b-s-e-s-s-e-d. In many ways, in retrospect, it's a blatantly obvious warm-up to Moulin Rouge! (2001) for director Baz Luhrmann. This drug to party to falling in instant love sequence in particular with its hyperactive cutting and medley of songs.
James. Tell me you don't think I did this. Tell me you know that.
The Invisible Man (2020) on HBO Max
This was a fairly effective film, but I wish Twitter would cool it on the occassional 'Elisabeth Moss for Best Actress' stuff because we need Oscars to take horror seriously when people are 100% deserving like Toni Collette in Hereditary or Lupita Nyong'o in Us but if you overpraise every horror performance who will take the genius horror work seriously? Elisabeth Moss for Best Actress in Shirley... now that we can get behind.
I like our photograph. I can see you in it.
Her (2013) on Netflix
I like this movie but am nowhere close to loving it which makes me feel so alone in the world. Perhaps I should give it another chance since it seems like everyone worships it.

Sounds like we need a 1996 retrospective.
Also thanks for reminding me about HORROR NOIRE. Perfect viewing for spooky season!
From this angle, in the image, Michael Douglas looks like Willem Dafoe. Dafoe made a similar film with Madonna and Julianne Moore. Here Sharon gives everything and more, she knew it was her big opportunity; pitty she had no other great roles/movies with one exception or another. Haven't seen it in a long time. 🥟
I remember Sharon Stone was everywhere: cinema, tv, video stores, magazine covers ... It seemed that if you looked under the bed or inside the closet you could find the actress ... Great time to be a fan. Those who haven't lived through that time will never know what the Sharon Stone phenomenon was.
Nathaniel - I completely disagree, I think that The Invisible Man was a very effective film and that Moss is up there (slightly) below Collette, Nyong’o and Pugh... a great performance is a great performance...
Gwen - I’d argue that Stone has multiple great movies in her canon (Total Recall, Alpha Dog, Broken Flowers... I’d even include Sliver as the ultimate erotic thriller trash). She really should work more - hell, she almost made Ratched bearable...
Yeah, Basic Instinct is such a modern classic and we can thank Verhoeven and Sharon Stone for it; Sharon was the Diva Hollywood was waiting for and she more than fulfiledl the bombshell role. She's a great actress, people should give her way more credit, love her nineties run and I think she's amazing in Diabolique and Intersection; also she deserved to win that Oscar for Casino (of all people, losing to Sarandon that year was ridiculous, Bates, Kidman or Moore should've been nominated instead of Sarandon and Thompson) and also deserved nods for BI, The Mighty and Bobby. I've been watching some interviews with her promoting Ratched and the woman is still as magnetic and luminous as always. Plus, THAT voice...
Rafaello, Eder, Kermit -- great to see Sharon Stone fans here. I really don't get why Hollywood lost interest. She is so charismatic.
Gwen -- omg. Body of Evidence. That movie is so horrible. haha. But I do love Julianne Moore's indignation at Madonna's sexuality and the slap scene.
Ryan -- well it's really only a born in 1996 retrospective haha. I'm not sure the film year was that great.
I want to stick up for Elisabeth Moss in The Invisible Man! It's a performance that's stuck with me more than what she's doing in Shirley, in part because of the tension between The Invisible Man and the kinds of films Moss often stars in. I don't think the movie is great, and I don't think the performance is at the same level as Nyong'o or Collette. But I think that's a bar that would exclude most performances in any genre, and I really do enjoy seeing Moss bring her intensity to a more mainstream movie.
Stone would have been on my Supporting Actress ballot for Bobby. She was wonderful in it.
Ethan was my absolute favourite '14 (although the thorny Whiplash is such a fantastic movie and well deserved win) - you're so right what an interesting career Hawke had. I'm pretty sure he will pick up another nomination ! I just watched Before Sunrise & Sunset again - you can't help but fall in love with these 2 and the whole team behind this amazing idea !!!
Those parents in Boyhood were really terrific. Both of them. Their performances could have been so uneven so easily given the shooting schedule, but no. The continuity was 100% there throughout the whole film. Their chemistry with each other and with their onscreen kids felt right, too. That movie was a small miracle. It's also my favorite Ethan Hawke performance.
@Nathaniel - I was also going off from your comment about your obsession with ROMEO+JULIET. I do think 1996 would be an interesting film year to look back on...
The #1 film that year stars the guy in the #1 film THIS year. The first MISSION IMPOSSIBLE film came out (with that franchise's next entry coming out next year!). FARGO is still in the mainstream with the TV series with THE CRAFT getting its own TV remake soon. Underrated Disney films were box office hits (HUNCHBACK, DALMATIANS). Madonna (EVITA) is back in the headlines with her possible new movie about herself. We were all just talking about THE BIRDCAGE. And a few other noteworthy films: TRAINSPOTTING, MATILDA, THE FIRST WIVES CLUB, BOUND, THAT THING YOU DO, SPACE JAM, ENGLISH PATIENT, MARVIN'S ROOM, ONE FINE DAY, SCREAM, etc.
I swear I didn't mean to go down a 1996 hole just now. Wikipedia is a fun resource!
