Streaming Tops: Top Gun, The Sea Beast, RRR, House of Gucci, etc...

by Nathaniel R

The original Top Gun (1986) has been popular on streaming all summer

We heard your response that adding streaming charts to the weekend box office was too much / too confusing so we'll do them separately. It's interesting to know what people are watching even if the data is highly questionable with no checks and balances to accuracy; we mostly have to make due with what the streamers themselves release (and who knows what agendas they have when there's no way to verify their figures) or third party services that also have unknown metrics. But we digress.

Charts are for July 12th or thereabouts (hint: there's also no set system of when numbers are reported from service to service as there is with the world of theatrical releases...)

Despite wearing the title of the classic French play, Dangerous Liaisons is actually more of a remake of Cruel Intentions (which was itself a remake of Dangerous Liaisons). As for the rest of the list, we haven't yet seen them except RRR. We are delighted to report that everything you've heard is true. It is ridiculously fun with wonderful action setpieces if not enough musical numbers and it would have had some placements here in our "halfway mark best of 2022 article" -- especially in the "scene" categories -- had we seen it in time.

Do these charts reflected what you're watching or do you tend to forge your own path?

Forge my own path. Being both a teacher and film enthusiast doesn't leave much time to be an avid television show watcher as well. And I usually only watch movies on a streamer if they have some sort of awards buzz/nomination (or, in the case of MUBI, I pick a random year and festival and try to catch up on as many of the contenders listed as possible - given I now no longer have acces to a big annual international fim festival, I have to use other means to keep up with my Hong Sang-Soos, my Apichatpong Weerasethakul and other interesting international filmmakers that my local arthouse doesn't programme (because their audience is predominantly baby boomers who prefer European and European only for their non-mainstream fare). Recently completed as much as I could for Venice 2020, for example.)

Currently pushing through "WandaVision" because apparently you need to have seen it to get a good grip on DOCTOR STRANGE AND THE BLAHBLAHBLAH.

I’m so happy you liked RRR. The action thriller’s joie de vivre is absolutely infectious. Sometimes a movie comes along that grabs its viewers by the eyeballs and reminds us of the exhilaration when terrific visuals are incorporated in dynamic storytelling.

Today was a tad disappointing that film blogger Sasha Stone lost her bid for an Emmy for her short film in the Netflix compilation Voir. Stone’s reminiscing about the summer of Jaws speaks to my passion for RRR. I find myself repeatedly watching the film to appreciate the surprisingly addictive images that defy us to look away for even a moment. The movie is such a force that we fear missing a single frame. RRR is a populist entertainment for the ages.

RRR (finished it yesterday) *** 1/2 / C+

Yes, it is to see to be believed, but it's overlong, too over the top, too hammy on acting - the british actors are mostly mediocre and playing caricaturesque villains - and the film is extremely racist (only ONE british characters is defined as a good person, and not a vicious psychopath). Sorry, I can't pass the simplistic, ultrapatriotic and borderline racist speech of the film, completely unbalanced.

I'm glad to know there's a fan of MUBI here as well. I love the service as I get to discover different shorts and all sorts of things. In fact, they just added some of the films of Alejandro Jodorowsky so I can now finish his filmography.

Definitely forge my own path. My time has been split between being with my man on the weekends, and being by myself during the week. Viewing tastes between both "households" are wildly split.

My guy is Vietnamese and pretty much hates any sort of war movie or anything with violence. We end up watching a LOT of South Korean TV shows which are fantastic in one way - they are almost always a 16 episode series with the entire plot and production wrapped up by the end. We'll also catch pretty much any Asian gay related movie or TV show which can be a real mixed bag. I can get him to watch the occasional western rom-comy type movie.

For me, during the week, I'll watch or at least sample pretty much anything that is well regarded except for superhero or star wars type shows (sorry Disney+).

So in the last month or so, on the weekends we've watched Forecasting Love and Weather, a ho hum Korean TV show, as well as an older one called Reply 1988 which has some charms. I could get my guy to watch The Princess, and Marry Me, and possibly RRR if it isn't too bloody or violent.

As for me, last week I watched No Time To Die, some MTM Show reruns, Death On The Nile, and The White Lotus. I'll probably sample Only Murders In The Building next week.

I am particularly interested in what people recommend from streaming. What are the hidden gems or things that are really worth watching.

I'm struck by how many of these shows I have never heard of, despite logging into Netflix, Hulu, and HBOMax every day. The algorithm is nuts. I should probably watch more than old Arrested Development, Always Sunny, and South Park episodes.

Excited about RRR, truly a masterpiece that everyone should watch every day

Just wanted to say THE BEAR is one of my favorite series I've watched on TV this year. Really hoping it gets a second season.

July 13, 2022 | Registered CommenterLynn Lee

@Lynn Lee. Right? I loved every second. Brilliant writing, cinematography, and cast.

Disappointed by no Emmy noms for two of my favorite actresses, so decided to watch another favorite in Postcards from the Edge tonight on HBO Max. I want THAT Meryl back.
