Weekend Box Office: Dragon Balls, Beasts, and Orphans

by Nathaniel R

Despite a roaring rampaging lion's face off with Idris Elba it was a quiet box office weekend. That said both the anime film Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, and the horror flick Orphan First Kill performed above expectations...

There are now only 13 movies since Jurassic Park, Easter Sunday, and The Black Phone all lost hundreds of theaters to the new films

14  RRR (India)  $6k (cum. $13.8)

RRR has also been available to stream for quite a while now but came back to some theaters given its lengthy popularity

WIDE RELEASE NOTES
Beast had a mellow opening, which is not good news since it has a tiny exclusive theatrical window to earn back its budget in

• The leggy Elvis just falling out of the top ten in its 9th week has now surpassed The Great Gatsby to become Baz Luhrmann's biggest US hit (Gatsby is still $84 million ahead in terms of global take, though).

Top Gun Maverick moved up yet another miraculous rung on the all time US box office ladder passing Infinity War. Its next target is Black Panther which is currently the fifth biggest grosser of all time in the US (if you don't adjust for inflation).

• Despite doubling its screen count, Bodies Bodies Bodies was off 22% so it's not going to be a leggy hit.

LIMITED RELEASE NOTES

• Despite a simultaneous debut on Paramount + and a limited theater count of 498, Orphan First Kill managed to gross $1.5 million in its opening weekend, another reminder that there's always a theatrical audience for horror films... at least for the first few days of release.

NEXT WEEKEND
George Miller's fantastical 3000 Years of Longing starring Tilda Swinton as a scholar and Idris Elba as a genie will face off against the horror thriller The Invitation starring Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones, Furious 7) while Sylvester Stallone hits Amazon in a superhero picture called Samaritan that they opted to take straight to streaming. In limited release we're also getting the hostage drama Breaking starring John Boyega (which played festivals as 892), last season's Spanish Oscar finalist The Good Boss starring Javier Bardem, and an erotic thriller Out of the Blue starring Diane Kruger and Hank Azaria.

What did you see this weekend? I've been sick so I stayed in but I did catch up with The Innocents due to its Amanda Awards wins this weekend

I also had a quiet weekend movie-wise. I just caught up with MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU. For some reason, I am always appreciative of more Three-Stooges-like antics of those little yellow rascals, and I hope the lazy, fifth-spot Oscar nominee for Animated Feature is taken by this, instead of something lesser like THE BAD GUYS (ergh.).

Saw and enjoyed v much "Nope". If not quite reaching the heights of Peele's first 2 amazing movies, it did feature a throw away reference to Scott Wolf which I appreciated.

Also saw "Xanadu" for a belated tribute to Olivia Newton-John. Remains an all time fave of mine thanks to listening to the LP a billion times as a young person. So influential.

Also saw "The Blue Veil" for the Smackdown. Let's just say I enjoyed "Detective Story" more :-) Do we know who the panelists for next Monday's Smackdown are yet??

A short film for the band Suede in Autofiction and Flowers of Shanghai plus a re-watch of Now More Than Ever: The History of Chicago.

Because surveys may ask questions in a variety of ways and with differing levels of information, and because questions asked early in a survey may affect how respondents react to questions asked later, designing the questionnaire can be challenging. https://dgcustomerfirstu.shop/

I know that The Good Boss is divisive for some - I guess they don't connect with the satire - but as someone who normally thinks its director - Fernando León de Aranoa - is totally overrated and championed because of his political attitude...

... The Good Boss is a complete masterpiece in satire. Maybe not as impressive as Billy Wilder's (the MASTER) but certainly as good as it has any right to be. I think Parallel Mothers was more deserving of sweeping the Goyas but The Good Boss was an amazing winner nevertheless.

TOTALLY recommended and one of the most fine satires about neoliberalism and capitalism that I have seen in years.

I saw “Emily the Criminal” because of the good recommendations of posters Ben Barton and Charlie G. Thank you both, that was really worth seeing. And so tense, my stomach was in knots.

I saw Bodies Bodies Bodies, Fall, and Orphan: First Kill - a very fun combination. All 3 are clumsy with wasted potential, but their goofy B-movie thrills end the summer rather nicely.

The OFK twist is one of my favourites in a while. Just... LOL.

I saw Everything Everywhere All At Once. I enjoyed the movie but found it to be overly long and repetitive in parts. Also, some of the humor was very puerile, which diminished my enjoyment of the movie.

I saw everything and everyone at the same time. I liked the movie, but it was too long and had some parts that were too similar. Also, some of the jokes were very childish, which made me like the movie less. flagle
