A Few Thoughts on the Golden Globes

by Nathaniel R

Screenshot from the Golden Globes

Did you watch the Golden Globes Sunday night? The show was (mostly) bereft of the kind of shocks we got in the pre-reform era but in a year where crystal Oscar balls are still foggy with possibility -- seriously, which film is going to win Best Picture? -- there was still inherent drama in the opening of envelopes. At least on the film side; the TV prizes were a complete snooze fest, merely rubber-stamping September's Emmy wins! Spreading the wealth should not be such a difficult concept for awards voters but we live in an age of monopolies and oligarchs so maybe abundance it's just not a vibe for the entertainment industry these days.

Emilia Perez (4 wins) and The Brutalist (3 wins) were all the rage with Globes voters. But did anyone else get a boost heading toward Oscar nominations?

Highlight of the Night
Demi Moore winning Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical. I think I speak for a lot of Gen Xers when I say that hearing Demi talk about her long career and self-corroding perceptions that she was only a "Popcorn Actress" was hugely moving. I do wonder how deeply this played (or didn't play) with younger viewers who only know Demi from her post-superstar career. I don't have to wonder if this resonated with working actors in Hollywood (particularly the ones with long careers) because it's impossible to imagine that it didn't. That win and her speech bodes very well for her chances with both SAG and Oscar voters. Actors know this struggle, even the most successful ones.

Two Beautiful Surprises
I was overjoyed that Flow managed to win Best Animated Feature since the forthcoming Oscar will surely go to a CGI Big Studio offering since it always does.

Best Actress in a Drama went to Fernanda Torres in the Brazilian Oscar finalist I'm Still Here. By a stroke of good luck I had crossed that Walter Salles picture off my list of "still to see" movies just that morning. Torres gives a wonderful performance but I have to admit I was rooting for my goddess Nicole Kidman who bounced back from a run of bad performances with one of her all-time best! I fully believed that Angelina Jolie would win and now I wonder if people just aren't that jazzed about her work or if I'm projecting since I didn't care for Maria or her star turn myself.

Best Actress on Oscar nomination morning is a nailbiter (as previously discussed). It's almost as if no one at all is locked and the nominated 5 could be literally ANY combination of these 8 talents: Baptiste, Erivo, Gascon, Jolie, Kidman, Madison, Moore, and Torres. Which three will be left out? (Adams, Anderson, Swinton, and Zendaya will probably have to settle for the Globes as the peak of their awards run this time through).

Biggest Bummer
Another way the Globes have been neutered to be more like every other show (sigh) is that they now do the Career Achievement awards off air which robs us of a Viola Davis speech. BOO!

Good Host
Nikki Glaser lost her category "Stand Up Comedy Special" but she emerged as something of a winner anyway; it's not easy hosting awards shows as many many celebrity comics and actors who've face-planted can attest. She wisely kept her jokes inbetween the action as brief levity but they were consistently funny. Best bit? Surely the quickly abandoned "Pope-ular" musical number.

"I was overjoyed that Flow managed to win Best Animated Feature since the forthcoming Oscar will surely go to a CGI Big Studio offering since it always does."

Does it? Just last season, the traditionally animated and non-American THE BOY AND THE HERON won against SPIDER-MAN and nominees from Pixar and Netflix. Yes, I know it's Hayao Miyazaki and Ghibli, titans of animation, but still.

I'm not saying FLOW will win the Oscar as I think THE WILD ROBOT will prevail. But it's not a done deal for Dreamworks (or Disney/Pixar with INSIDE OUT 2).

In other news, while I might have been a Globes voter this season, I can't possibly co-sign the decision to take the Career Achievements from the telecast. How could they rob us of the pleasure of seeing Viola Davis' acceptance speech! Especially after her introduction to Meryl was such a moment in 2017!

I'm curious about your comment about Nicole's run of baf performances since I thought you were a fan of her work in Ricardos and Northman. Am I misremembering?

January 6, 2025 | Registered CommenterMike in Canada

I was surprised they didn't give Demi Moore a standing ovation.
45 years in the business as a household name, she deserved it!

Seeing people like Kathy Bates, Sharon Stone, Nicole Kidman react to Moore's win was so special. Women who have been around long enough to know what it takes to sustain their careers.

January 6, 2025 | Registered CommenterDAVID S

It was great to see 2 of my favourite 90's female box office stars being celebrated,I dont mind someone as great as Jodie sweeping the TV Oscars.

I was skeptical on Moore due to her film's themes but that speech sealed the deal and to win against 2 actresses in critical faves and presumed frontrunner films and one in a huge box office hit was really something and for a horror film,i'll be cheering loudly when she's nominated and even louder if she wins.

It is about time that horror got it's due.

Tilda's reaction to the Torres win.

The other 4 spots I feel are likely in this order Madison Gascon Baptiste Torres Kidman Winslet Jolie Zendaya Swinton Anderson Adams.

Brodys win is likely to take him to Oscar No 2 this was the place to reward Fiennes but I just don't think it's going to happen he has hardly won a thing and the career honours just aren't forthcoming,Bafta will go for Brody also definitely not Chalamet.

The leads in supporting winners will take it all the way to the big night, this was the place to change the shape of the race with a Norton or a Grande.

Stan might grab that 5th slot away from Craig due to the year he's had and I really hope it's for the undervalued The Apprentice but he's great in A Different Man also.

Challengers winning Best Score was one of the most satisfying things of the night.

Host was bland and safe with dull jokes and skits,Gervais is still the supreme host,he pops the pomposity of it all.

It's Emilia Perez vs The Brutalist I am thinking for Best Pic,Wicked would have been such a Globes pic 20 yrs ago.

Demi was best everything.

I haven't liked a Kidman performance since Lion,do tell Nat where you think she's been bad,I really really didn't like her as Lucille Ball or in Destroyer,Boy Erased or Prom.

Corbet helped his cause and I do think the DGA is more likely to respond to his achievement than Baker or Audiard's.

Jeff G was best dressed male with a side order of Adrien Brody.

Timothee is still stuck in that Leo stage of his career and those jokes proved it,they make the pretty boys wait

The Moore thing feels like a mix of Michelle Yeoh and Andrea Riseborough’s 2022 campaigns. On one hand it’s a surprise genre blockbuster elevating a megastar to a serious actress level. On the other, it’s the Hollywood in-group rallying behind someone they like and respect—the A-list grassroots are her corner publicly, enthusiastically. I think she’s locked, and could even win—almost à la Jamie Lee Curtis that same year. (A TON of 2022 parallels running through Moore’s campaign!)

Madison feels locked on the strength of her movie and performance. She could miss, but I think she’s safe.

Looks likely but could easily miss:

Gascon—Given how much the Globes LOVED Emilia Perez, it’s notable that it didn’t help her in Best Actress. If Gomez is the weakest link, she’s second weakest and in the toughest category.
Erivo—If Wicked has peaked and actor passions are elsewhere.
Jolie—If people skip Maria or don’t connect with it, so many other women in the mix.

Looks less likely but maybe:

Kidman—no one campaigns like her, I can’t count her out.

Those critical spoilers:

Jean-Baptiste—could get nothing from here on out and would still be a threat for a surprise nomination.
Torres—also no surprise if she makes the cut now, after a Globe Drama (!) win.

Wildest wildcard I can’t rule out:

Anderson—too bad she’s sharing a narrative with Demi Moore this year!

Probably not:

Swinton (BAFTA nod might be her reward), Adams (nope) and Ronan (nope).

everyone -- my issue with Kidman is because I watch (almost) everything.

She is unfortunately terrible in the TV miniseries The Perfect Couple and almost as bad in the romcom she did with Zac Efron and the animated film Spellbound in which she does voicework makes THREE terrible projects in the same year as Babygirl (and all released before it) and the year before she was bad in Aquaman 2 and though she wasn't bad it's hard to rave about her performance in "Expats". So that was 5 projects in a row --- 6 if you count that Tv series Lioness (which no one seems to have watched/cared about) in the past two years that have not remotely been up to her usual level.

I was getting worried!

January 6, 2025 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Nathaniel, agree with all your points.
But I think "Flow" can make its way to the Oscar.

And after losing Honorary Oscar, now we also lose Cecil B. DeMille Award.
They're destroying the world aa we know it! They couldn't make it worse. Bastards!

Demi Moore and Brady Corbet (best picture speech) gave the best speeches of the night: brilliant, sincere, courageous, touching. I almost cried with both.

I'm really upset for Chalamet and Fiennes. Both are brilliant. Does Brody need a second Oscar in a second nomination? I still believe in Timmy and Ralph.

I don't buy Stan, Eisenberg should have won.

"Emilia Pérez" had a incredible night, Best Musical/Comedy AND Best No-English Film. Really impressive. Saldaña is a deserved winner, although I was rooting for Rossellini. But they choose the wrong song: "Mi Camino" is so much better.

In Culkin vs. Norton fight (triple for me with Strong), the youngest boy won.
For me, he's the lock of the year.

But aI was very happy with "Challengers" winning Original Score. For me it would also won Original Song.

Congratulations to Torres. She's terrific and her performance is excellent. People are crazy here in Brazil about her win. To me it looks exactly like Isabelle Huppert's victory in 2016. She's going to be nominated, but will not win. In 2016, everybody knew was the year of Emma Stone and "La La Land".
And in 2024, who will win?
Moore is the frontrunner in this moment, but I still believe in Kidman. She trully deserves it!
SAG noms next Wednesday will dissipate our doubts and put it all in a new light.

"Anora" and "Wicked" (well-done, hahaha) were the great loosers of the night - that stupid award for box-office is the same as nothing.

For now, "The Brutalist" is the frontrunner and it's stronger than ever, but "Conclave" can't be ignored.

January 6, 2025 | Registered CommenterFabio Dantas Flappers

Nat what do you consider bad Kidman, because her high are so high are we being too hard on her,It's a big shame because I loved her since Bangkok Hilton but since Lion i've liked nothing.

I suppose the opposite is true of Demi, her lows are quite low so The Substance seems all that more surprising.

I have never thought Demi was a bad actress though,i've liked her in everything plus along with Sharon Stone Julia Roberts Michelle Pfeiffer and Kate Winslet she's one of sisters favourite Top 5 actresess.

January 6, 2025 | Registered CommenterMr Ripley79

Other than Emilia Perez winning international and comedy/musical (ugh, but at least it wasn't Wicked) these are a really fun group of winners.

I agree with you Nat about Nicole. I'm a Kidmaniac like yourself, so it feels so good to see her delivering what we have known all along that Kidman is capable of once again. So, of course, I was rooting for her. Having said that, it's so nice to see Fernanda Torres winning. Great narrative for the Oscars, too.

Also really great to see Demi win. Such a fun choice. And I hope this means horror movies will be taken more seriously for awards in the future. Justice for Toni and Lupita! Back to Demi, I really think she sealed the deal for the Oscar with that speech. Very smart.

I want Gascon, Erivo and Jolie OUT. Give me Kidman, Torres and Jean-Baptiste.

Sebastian Stan is SO good in A Different Man. He really should take Domingo's spot for the Oscars but it won't happen.

Also happy for Zoe Saldaña. She was one of the few stand outs of Emilia Perez and elevated her thinly written character.

Yay for Challengers winning score. Didn't care much for the film but the score is great and a fun choice.

And even though I'm happy for Flow or any time a non Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks/etc. animated film wins, I do not understand how Memoir of a Snail is not sweeping every single award. I really don't get it.

So, all in all, fun show, fun winners.

January 6, 2025 | Registered CommenterSad Man

The only person I wanted to see win anything last night was Demi Moore and I'm beyond thrilled she got it. I agree with others that her speech sealed the deal and I can't wait for the wildest Best Actress nomination since Ann-Margret in Tommy, despite diametric levels of quality.

I think people are underestimating Kidman for a nomination. I watched her speech at the PSIFF and she gave such a moving tribute to her recently late mother that it was hard to imagine her not gaining traction with her personal struggles. AMPAS has never sprung for her more adventrous work, but they've also never denied her when she was having a clearly diffcult year in her personal life with work in contention (thinking mainly of 2001/2002).

The biggest (happiest) surprise was obviously Fernanda Torres. Does this mean that Jolie is finally out of the loop? I wish she was. I've never seen anything special i n her. But then again, AMPAS put out for Annette Bening in NYAD. So I'm not confident in shutting her out.

Is Emilia Perez really any good? Most reviews are lukewarm at best which makes its record breaking triumphs all the more baffling.

I think Best Actress will go like this, in order of locked status and what I would love to see happen:
Mickey Madison. The most buzzed about breakthrough performance and the most visible nominee in other pizes.
Demi Moore. Another comeback narrartive that is so much more than what we're typically used to seeing. She's also the most frequent nominee in the regional andprecurssor races. She's been cited runner up a lot this season.
Marianne Jean-Baptiste. She's the Emmanuelle Riva, Charlotte Rampling, Marion Cotillard in 2014, Sandra Huller equivalant of their years. Critically lauded performances that missed (mostly) major precurssors but showed up on Oscar nomination day. And she fully deserves it.
Nicole Kidman for afromentioned reasons.
Fernanda Torres. If Jolie lost out to her at the Globes, it's hopefully over.

Having said that, anyone else getting Best Actress 1996 vibes from this slate of nominees? MacDormand won while losing to Madonna for Evita. Something comparable could happen this time around.

Overall one of the most exciting years we've ever seen. Yet they're probably going to stick safe.

Best actress is looking so exciting. Probably Madison is gonna get the CC, Baptiste the Bafta, I wonder where Sag will take us. The race is completely up for grabs right now.

My current 5 are: Madison, Moore, Gascon, Torres, Baptiste

Hopefully Sag goes with Ariana so we can have a little competition there too.

Bad TV awards. Please don't turn into the Emmys Part Two.

Best Supporting Actor. The usual bore.

Amazed by the Fernanda Torres win. I follow lots of Brazilians (for arts purposes only) and I thought they were delusional.

They're going to make Chalamet wait which means I'll be dead when he wins. Not complaining.

Can we get a popcorn actress narrative every year? Its giving me life. Funny how film twitter is so on board with Demi when it was so against Jamie Lee. Same type of actress, same narrative, you guys.

As I sat watching the Golden Globes, I couldn't help but think of the eerie compositions I created on Sprunki Retake, which similarly blended contrasting elements to create a unique experience, much like the awards show's mix of glamour and artistic recognition.

January 7, 2025 | Registered Commenterdove ji

Claudio - while it's true that Miyazaki won last year, he's the only non-english language filmmaker to ever win here. I think my point stands. The percentages are awful for animated feature.

In 23 years of the category we've had

65% of the trophies go to Disney or Disney/Pixar
82% of the trophies going to CG animation

The most depressing stat is surely that no indie animation house has ever won- no Laika, no American Empirical Pictures, no Cartoon Saloon, no Les Armateurs, no Tim Burton Productions. The closest we've come to something feeling outside the Big Hollywood system is Studio Ghibli (a legendary studio of course overseas) but the first time they won they were backed by Disney. So Boy and the Heron was quite a unique winner / feat being released in the US by GKids.

January 7, 2025 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Mr Ripley - uff have to disagree with you on Gervais. I know you are not alone in feeling this but for me Gervais tone is all wrong for awards shows. It's fine to poke a little fun but to display utter contempt for everything in the industry you're making money from is very strange. I'm so surprised he was invited back multiple times.

January 7, 2025 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

It's wild that not only did they push the DeMille and Burnett recipients off air, but they also didn't give them top prizes to present. It just seems a bit disrespectful. I suspect if they gave each a time limit for their speeches they would keep to it. While the speeches aren't always barnburners, when they are they're quite good and they capture zeitgeist in a way that's good for the show. But I wonder if CBS and producers feared things might get too political? I still think Streep's speech in 2017 was a massive cultural and political moment that pushed people to question where they stand.

Moore gave a great speech and I appreciate how she discussed the ways that she shrunk herself. Cynically, when she mentioned being a popcorn actress I immediately thought of her failed performance in The Scarlet Letter. But she's right - even the biggest stars should be given chances to show what they can do. Since GI Jane, she has done that in a ton of supporting roles. Now she gets to do that as a lead. May Sharon Stone have the same chances in the coming years.

The Zoe Saldana win was great. I think she could sweep. I do wonder, however, if her hopping on stage with the songwriters will rub the larger academy the wrong way. I suspect she'll be a bit more polished at CC and SAG to keep her campaign going well.

On Nicole being not great in previous projects: As a big Kidman fan I agree. But, I tend to see her treating a lot of her recent TV projects and the Efron film like popcorn films/blockbusters. She gives them just enough, but saves her full characterization and powers for the scripts that really matter.

January 7, 2025 | Registered CommenterJoe G.

Why does the Golden Globe award now look like a prop from Flesh Gordon?

January 7, 2025 | Registered CommenterDavid Feldman

The Golden Globe winners on the film side were fantastic. Every single one of them a talented actor giving a smart, interesting, nuanced performance. And the speeches were terrific.

The GGs get a lot of grief, but I think on the whole their choices are often far better than Oscars. Several of their Best Picture winners over the last 20 years (Brokeback Mountain, Babel, Atonement, The Social Network, The Power of the Dog) were far superior than the movies that won the Oscar.

Even though I was personally fine with missing another humorless speech from Viola, it's atrocious that they moved that award out of the show itself. Hopefully they will restore it next year.

January 7, 2025 | Registered CommenterEricB

Emilia Perez is going to go down as bad a winner as Crash. That film is gross on a number of levels that are being hammered home by far greater critics than me every chance they get.

At least Demi Moore is on the rise and has the "finally celebrate her career" narrative to help her for The Substance. Also looking forward to Challengers always being labeled "Academy Award Winner" thanks to that magnificent score.

January 7, 2025 | Registered CommenterRobert G

Such an unexpected and deserved victory for Emilia Perez, the Mulholland Dr. of this decade!

Extremely happy also for Wicked (at least this stupid category worth it a prize) and Flow. In general it's a lovely bunch of winners except one (looks like I'm the only who can't stand Conclave anyway, uff) and I agree with EricB. The globes have been more satisfying than the Oscars in recent years.

The best actress race is going towards Demi and is deserved. It's a brave performance and is the the kind I love: not much talking, a lot of face.
Anyway I continue to substain that the most interesting leading actress race is in the supporting category.

January 7, 2025 | Registered CommenterGallavich

@MrRipley 79

If by "safe" you mean enjoyable and funny, Poehler and Fey were safe. But if you rewatch some of their hosting gigs, they had the right amount of bite and edge...and class.

The thing is, "insufferable" means just that: unbearable. Gervais could be the boldest comic in the universe, but if I mute him or go for a bathroom break during his bits, what's the point? If a tree falls etc etc.

January 7, 2025 | Registered CommenterFrank Zappa

I haven't watched awards shows for years at this point and I must say I was pleasantly surprised and how funny Nikki was and how little I cringed.

"not a fan of zoe saldanas's neediness and microphone hogging" - Agreed.

"...I was personally fine with missing another humorless speech from Viola..." - Agreed.

-

I was rooting for Demi to win and was thrilled. She NAILED the speech and I hope she takes it all the way.

As of now, I see Best Actress looking like this...

- Demi Moore
- Mikey Madison (I've always seen her as a lock for the nomination, but never competitive for the win)
- Fernanda Torres
- Marianne Jean-Baptiste
- Cynthia Erivo

Alt: 1. Gascon, 2. Kidman, 3. Jolie.

Pamela Anderson is the dark horse wildcard, but as others have stated, Moore sucked all the oxygen up for that narrative, with a buzzy movie that has traction in other categories to boot.

I think Zoe Saldana is the safest bet for Emilia Perez all around, along with Song nomination(s) and International Feature. Other than that, I think it's shakier than what the Globes indicated.

Cynthia Erivo is shaky and will depend on how the Academy is feeling on Wicked overall.

Kidman has a shot but they can be iffy on Nicole, especially when she's in more subversive roles (and this film has no traction anywhere else).

Jolie is dropping fast. It was already tough for Kristen Stewart to get in for Spencer. But never say never, huge star, previous winner, returning to form, in a biopic from a director whose previous two similarly themed biopics received Best Actress nominations... But they may be getting tired of this theme of his.

SAG and BAFTA might clear some things up... Or it might make it more confusing. Best Actress nominations will be a nail biter for sure!

I'm also sick of acceptance speeches that are like...

"LET ME LEAVE YOU WITH TWO WORDS: RE-SHOOT APPROVAL."

Honestly, take it up with your agent...the viewing public is not interested in byzantine Hollywood contract law. Frances McDormand gets a pass because it was 2018 and that was a TIME and PLACE in the industry. I think it's tacky to use an acceptance speech to score passive-aggressive points against your studio, producers, whoever?

January 7, 2025 | Registered CommenterDK

@DK

I agree with this sentiment 100% but whose speech are you talking about? Admittedly I only watched a handful of speeches. Was there another person this year who over-sold their moment in the spotlight?

I'd also disagree that McDormand should automoatically get a pass because the TimesUp/MeToo era was built upon shakey, to say the least, evidence. Plus, there's been so much corruption within the TIMESUP fiasco that has come to light recently that I'd caution further praise upon industry stars 'finally speaking truth to power'. It all rings so hollow.

January 7, 2025 | Registered CommenterChase

@ DK

On one hand, I understand what you're saying, but I think this is a pressing issue and I applauded Corbet's sentiment.

The film (and music) industry is largely dead... Heck, I saw an interview of Ellen Burstyn talking about this in the 2000s, regarding independent film vs the mainstream industry, so you can only imagine how bad it is now. Films used to be made by filmmakers, but now they're being made by businessmen. They only care about profit and making money. For the most part, they are only investing money into ideas with already established audiences... This is why we see so many comic book movies / reboots / remakes / origin stories / sequels / spin-offs, etc. Original ideas are few and far between. Movies like The Holdovers feel like a miracle in this day and age.

So I feel like what he's saying is important. He was basically told because his movie isn't a mainstream spectacle that falls into one of those categories, it wasn't profitable or marketable, and it sounds like they were trying to alter it for that reason, rather than trust and respect the filmmaker that was hired for the job.

As an artist in the industry myself, I think it's extremely important and I'm glad he used that moment to speak on that because I'm sure lots of directors feel this way.

P.S. I hope this is the comment you were referring to, otherwise please disregard. Lol. :)

Wow, an anti-MeToo commenter on TFE.

That's new.

January 7, 2025 | Registered CommenterJuan Carlos Ojano

@JCO

The Metoo movement set out with laudible aims in the beginning. It quickly lost its way. Plus, the dispraortionate power in the industry is due to a small group of people abusing their standing. It's not controversial to point this out. Unless you feel that any and all criticism of feminist movements equals condemnation of all women? If that's the case then I can't endorse. The TimesUp movement also lost it's way as an IndieWire article correctly pointed out almost four years ago. I am not antimetoo, I am anti corruption and unfortunately both movements failed.
