This Film Year, I'm Thankful for...

by Cláudio Alves

Happy Thanksgiving!

The world is burning and everything sucks, principled people are few and far between, with depression and bad news always waiting 'round the corner. And yet, even now, there are things to be thankful for. As a cinephile, I've found that films often represent a reprieve from doom, including when they catalyze one's anger and throw it back at the audience. Indeed, it's difficult to imagine life without those moving pictures. From a personal perspective, it's impossible to conceive of the past months without these screen-bound pleasures. So far, 2023 has been a fantastic year for my journey as a film fanatic, from stellar pictures to unprecedented opportunities.

It only seems fair to share some of that joy in a day that, for my American friends, is all about celebrating gratitude. Sure, I'm Portuguese, but the sentiment persists beyond borders. Without further ado, this film year, I'm thankful for…

Happy Thanksgiving!

Dear readers, I have COVID for the second time which has spoiled my holiday (great timing!) but hopefully yours is going great! Thank you for your patience of late -- so grateful for any of you still with us or rooting for us. Coverage will be revving back up for the final festive month of the year. We'll have several "Oscar Volleys" (we started with editing), more reviews (here's everything for this year), plus interviews with a few directors and actors for you very soon. Also here are all the updated Oscar charts... and of course those updates won't last long before the winds shift. 'Tis the season'.

xo, Nathaniel

a big final round of thanks...

Hey all. Nathaniel here. We've been quiet this weekend for offscreen life (remember that?) with friends and family for the holidays. But soon I'll try to have some words on Sondheim. And next week should be ultra busy: interviews, new reviews, precursor season, etcetera

But one last heaping of gratitude. THANK YOU TO ALL OUR READERS! Thank you for sticking with us for years and supporting and sharing in our actressexuality as well as our more niche interests like oh costume design, cinematography, international cinema, and love of sudden retrospectives...

Thankful for... Christopher James

This year for our "thankful for" column we're interviewing our contributors so you can get to know them better. Yes, Thanksgiving is technically over but we're still grateful. Here's one more for you. A big hug and thank you to CHRISTOPHER JAMES!

Chris has been with for TFE for just over a year but we've known him much longer online, first meeting him in the flesh on a trip to Los Angeles. In the short time he's been with us he's completed the popular "Gay Best Friend" series (one more wrap-up episode is coming!) and is about to launch a new series. He also kept things lively with fun personal anecdotes and important questions, and has been a powerhouse when it comes to our Emmy coverage

Our short interview follows...

When did you first fall in love with the movies?

Thankful for... Cláudio Alves!

This year for our "thankful for" column we're mixing it up a bit. Instead of asking our contributors to share a brief list of favourite things, I'm interviewing them so you can get to know them a bit better. We love them all, here, at TFE HQ and hope you do too. On Thanksgiving's Eve let's talk to our most frequent contributor, CLÁUDIO ALVES

Cláudio first joined us two and a half years ago and it makes all kind of sense that his first piece was on the potential of Oscar's costume design race of 2019. He blesses us with his expressive writing so often it's hard to choose favourites or even know where to point you but if you're just joining us but our most popular series, currently, is his "Almost There" column on performances that didn't quite win Oscar favor so start there! Other passions of his include film festivals and International Cinema and Hollywood History. Any links in this interview go to related beautiful pieces of his, too.

Here's our short interview...
