Dorian Awards doubles up on its winners and 'Flee' takes four prizes

The Society for LGBTQ Entertainment Journalists (a few of us at Team Experience are members) have voted. The society has chosen the following films, marked with a ★ as the best of 2021. Unfortunately, there was a LOT of doubling up on prizes rather than spreading the wealth: Ariana deBose, Jane Campion, and Pedro Almodóvar each won two awards and Flee won four times. Argh. You know how your host here feels about spreading the wealth. Anyway, can you feel the season wrapping up? Voting is underway and the last burst of awardage is over the next few days with the Oscars on the 27th. The winners are after the jump...

"Minari" leads the Dorian Award nominees but LGBT films underperform

The Society for LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, to which I and a few of our writers here belong, have revealed their nominations for the film year with Ammonite, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, I Carry You With Me, Supernova, and Uncle Frank up for best LGBTQ Film though only one of them (Ma Rainey) secured any other nominations. Minari leads with the overall nominations with six and Nomadland is just behind with five.

TCA and Dorian Awards go all in for the Emmy frontrunners

The Television Academy has already begun their week long awards handout. The Creative Arts Emmys will run until the 17th and the Primetime Emmys wrap things up on the 20th.  With the Emmys upon us, the precursors have also come out to play. The TCA (Television Critics Association) and The Society for LGBTQ Entertainment Journalists, which hold the "Dorian Awards", have both recently announced their winners for the year and both loved on the Emmy frontrunners Watchmen and Schitt's Creek. Both organizations are stingy with acting honors, though, offering only two (in TCA's case) and four (at the Dorians), as opposed to Emmys 16 regular acting categories (barring voice and narration which would bring the number even higher). Couldn't there be a happy medium between 2-4 and 16+

Beauty vs Beast: Lesbian Love Song

Jason Adams from MNPP here -- at the Tribeca Film Fest last year I weirdly reviewed two movies involving Alessandro Nivola and Orthodox Judaism. The first one is called To Dust and Nivola (along with his wife actress Emily Mortimer) produced it -- it stars Son of Saul's Géza Röhrig and Matthew Broderick as an extremely odd couple grappling with the afterlife. Here is my review, and you can watch the trailer over here. To Dust is finally hitting some theaters this weekend, and I highly recommend seeking it out. I really dig it.

The other movie I reviewed at Tribeca 2018 was Sebastian Lelio's Disobedience, which came out last year and which in a just world we'd be celebrating its several Oscar nominations just about now. Hey I did my part -- Disobedience got mentions in both end-of-year polls I have a say in, The Team Experience Awards here on this site as well as the Dorian Awards for the GALECA guild of LGBT critics. But being a great film is its own reward, and Disobedience will be remembered for a very long time as such. Now let's face off its Rachels -- McAdams is Esti, the one who stayed, and Weisz is Ronit, the one who went away...

PREVIOUSLY Last week's Can You Ever Forgive Me poll was as close as two friends sweeping up cat turds could be, but Melissa McCarthy got the best of Richard E Grant in the end with 53% of the vote. Said /3rtful:

"Unprepared for how emotionally affected I would be by this movie. I think the casting of McCarthy and those initial cut trailers gave no clue of the emotional wallop this movie carries."

Dorian Awards Favor 'The Favourite'

The Favourite lived up to its title with GALECA’s Dorian Award voters, who named the audacious historical romp Film of the Year and bestowed its star, Olivia Colman, with the Film Performance of the Year—Actress tiara for her funny and heartbreaking turn as Queen Anne. Two results that we suspect will be popular with The Film Experience community. The movie talso scored Screenplay of the Year honors for Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara.

However for the three other acting awards for film, The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics followed the critical consensus. Ethan Hawke in First Reformed, Regina King in If Beale Street Could Talk and Richard E Grant in Can You Ever Forgive Me?, added another award to their heavy mantles. Roma and Alfonso Cuaron continued their dominance of the critics awards by winning Foreign Language Film of the Year and Best Director.
