Waiting For Link Man

efilmcritic Erik Childress's wonderful annual list of Blurb Whores of the Year
THR August Osage County wins big at the Capri festival in Italy, winning four prizes. Harvey Weinstein and Chris Cooper were also honored at the festival. In non Weinstein awards they honored 12 Years a Slave, Saving Mr Banks, and The Great Beauty as well as Valeria Golino (remember her?) as European actress of the year
EW Downton Abbey on the cover. Can't wait for its return this weekend
Variety 3 time Oscar winning producer Saul Zaentz (Amadeus, Cuckoo's Nest and The English Patient) has passed away
i09 Disney Princess themed lingerie from Japan!

MNPP vicious but true takedown of Ron Howard's Rush
Cinema Blend The Rock for a new iteration of Green Lantern? There are worse ideas, casting-wise I suppose but DC movies are so hopeless!
The Guardian finds that The Wolf of Wall Street uses the naughty F word 506 times, which "breaks down to Scorsese giving 2.81 fucks a minute." LOL. But who spent the three hours counting? That's what I want to know.
USA Today Character actor Joseph Ruskin (Prizzi's Honor, The Magnificent Seven) has passed away
The Wire as we move into the dumping ground of each film year (that'd be new January releases, not platformed holdovers) Joe Reid looks back at ten January releases that didn't suck
Vanity Fair funny Proust questionnaire with T Bone Burnett whose latest movie music work I can't stop listening to. That'd be Inside Llewyn Davis

Hitchcock with Barbara Harris on "Family Plot"Finally...
My friend Matthew Rettenmund who writes Boy Culture has compiled a list of all of Hitchcock's leading ladies who are still alive. (Make sure to note the punny captions). I found this list of ten surprising even though I recently made that oldest 100 screen actors of note list. He's right though that at least two of the major leading ladies (Doris Day & Julie Andrews) don't seem like Hitchcock heroines at all. I forget every time that they headlined one. Those moments were just so atypical in their careers, don't you think?

Strong Lex For Second Steel

JA from MNPP here with today's rumor going around that Man of Steel director Zack Snyder and the powers that be at Warner Brothers have narrowed the search for their sequel's Lex Luthor to one fella you probably recognize - Mr. Mark Strong. Although the source giving this info up says the sequel's going to shoot next year I still think it's way way early to be speculating on this... ahhhh but speculation's what the internet does. And I'd wager that Lex is, as a villain or at least as an important character that will be introduced, a given as far as the second film is concerned - he's arguably as important to the world of Clark Kent as Lois is.
.
Mark Strong is probably a great pick, too - he's older than Cavill, but as we saw in Man of Steel Lex is already an established force in the world to be reckoned with; his company's name is all over the place. So making him older make sense. The thing that gives me pause is...
.
.
... Mark Strong has already played a DC character. He was Sinestro in Green Lantern. Granted he looked a little different. And he was probably the best thing going on in that movie. (Not counting Ryan Reynolds' muscles.) Of course Green Lantern was a bit of a disaster for the studio, and sweeping all of that under the rug is probably where DC are going slash have already long gone, so I should get over this.
.
It just makes the field for these roles seem small though, doesn't it? I'm not knocking Mark Strong by any means, I like him, but there are lots of actors out there in the world with access to a razor blade and a nice shaped head who might be interesting and unexpected and haven't already played the bad guy in a DC movie, you know? Any suggestions, folks?

Learning to Love the Lantern Again

I'm pretty sure I've told y'all at some point or another that Green Lantern was a childhood favorite as superheroes go. I wore a Green Lantern t-shirt proudly. Before the shitty movie was a reality, that is. Recently I've taken to only wearing it on laundry days. My beloved worn shirt mutated into a Tee of Shame.

Last week, wanting something comfortable for a long days travel to Utah, I wore it. As I was walking through the Phoenix airport on layover an adorable little toddler pointed right at me while yanking on his father's pant leg and squealed:

IT'S GWEEN LANTEUHN!"

I smiled and for the first time in ages didn't think 'Person on Street thinks I have terrible taste in movies!". I suddenly felt warmly toward the power ringed hero again.

I returned from Utah to discover that Green Lantern had come out of the closet (see liplock above). No, not Silver Age brunette Hal Jordan but Golden Age blonde lantern Alan Scott. He wears the ring in "Earth 2" a parallel universe. (For those of you who are unfamiliar with comic books, the ring of power changes owners periodically, and comic books are all fucked up with alternate realities anyways since heroes never age and their histories keep changing).

As much as a gay superhero movie would be a fun novelty, I hope they never make a Green Lantern sequel or reboot. Not that it wouldn't also be fun to see Ryan Reynolds making it with another man, even a ringed projection of another Green Lantern

Sorrry. My mind is its own power ring. It manifests my wishes...but even if Ryan Reynolds were Alan Scott and not Hal Jordan, if he's smart he'll never reprise the role.

On an unrelated but perfectly symmetrical note, please enjoy the awesome comic strip by the talented Anthony Holden which is embedded after the jump. It's a dance party!

Random Thought I Had While Watching 'Green Lantern':

Don't even get me started about all the sartorial fantasies I kept having involving Blake Lively...

Have you ever been so bored at a movie that your mind suddenly took you to such weird places?

This 'n' That: Girlz 'N' Games, Depp 'n' Tonto, Kevin 'n' Tilda

Many many years ago I became online friends with Noelle Adams due to our obsessive mutual Pfandom. Now she writes "Girlz 'N' Games". We've heard 2011 described as "Year of the Superhero" and "Year of the Sequel" or the "Year of the Raunchy Comedy".

But Noelle has another idea...

She goes on to explain herself  and it's a persuasive case, right? Or maybe Hal Jordan was such an A-hole that he makes the whole summer douchey?

Your Movie Buddy interviews Miranda July currently in theaters with The Future
Ultra Culture is covering a huge event in London 'Empire Big Screen'. I guess the magazine is hosting a big event? I don't know. I'm confused. But I like this blog and I love a subway getting saloon doors to celebrate Cowboys and Aliens.
Deadline reports that Disney has pulled the plug on the Johnny Depp Lone Ranger movie due to cost. Didn't see that coming, Depp being the billion dollar franchise guy o' choice.

I Need To Talk About Kevin...
In that... I realize it's weird that I haven't. What blog should be more excited for this movie than The Film Experience? I mean Tilda being a frequent topic and gold medalist and all. And now the movie has got this awesome Rosemary's Baby hued poster that dares to make "Kevin" the big face, and shove Tilda in the corner!? [P.S. I love that he's transparent so that you can see her.]

But as I was thinking about the weirdness of me never talking about this movie last night, I realized that somewhere in the back of the brain I had logged this as 'will read book before seeing movie or watching any clips' And now time is running out.

Must read it. I'm between books anyway. Keep hearing it's great.
