2022 Emmy Category Analysis: Drama Guest Acting Categories

"Succession" added an Emmy winner and an Oscar winner to its cast this year. Will it pay off with a Guest Actor Emmy win?

It’s no secret that the Guest Acting categories often reward big names and buzzy actors, rather than actual performances. The awards can often go to beloved actors, even if they only appear in one or two moments of their submission. Take for example wins for Margo Martindale (The Americans) and Ron Cephas Jones (This Is Us) for seasons and episodes that are far from their best work. While past years have trended towards the biggest names possible, this year’s crop doesn’t necessarily skew towards major celebrities. Instead, it’s more consolidated around a small number of shows. Only five shows make up all twelve slots (the same number as in the Comedy Guest Acting races).

Succession fever has swept the guest acting drama categories. The HBO drama makes up seven of the twelve possible guest acting slots, or nearly 60% of the honors. Does this mean the show is unbeatable or could this pave the way for an underdog prevailing?

Emmy Review: Guest Actress in a Drama

For the last three years, The Handmaid’s Tale has dominated this category with wins for Alexis Bledel (2017), Samira Wiley (2018), and Cherry Jones (2019). This year, Bledel is poised for a victory lap in this category after competing in Supporting last season. Last year’s winner Jones is also back, but for a different show. She even pulled off a surprise win last year over Phylicia Rashad, who reappears in this category. Aside from Jones, Succession gets another nomination for Harriet Walter. Meanwhile, category mainstays Cox and Tyson are in for the fourth and fifth time, respectively, for their characters in their final seasons (though neither has won for these roles).

Interview: Ritesh Batra on "The Sense of an Ending"

Ritesh Batra, a 37 year old director from Mumbai, is in New York when we speak, not far from the editing room. He's just finished a shoot in Colorado for what will be his third feature in four years (Our Souls at Night). He hasn't yet decided where he'll be next but he has a lot of options. His debut film The Lunchbox (2013), a bittersweet romance set in Mumbai starring Irrfan Khan, put him on the map. For his follow up, a somewhat surprising move: the British literary adaptation of Julian Barnes bestseller "The Sense of an Ending," which just opened in limited release. 

The Sense of an Ending concerns a divorced shop owner Tony (Jim Broadbent / Billy Howle) who is suddenly preoccupied with memories of his youth and his first love Veronica (Charlotte Rampling / Freya Mavor) after receiving news that her mother (Emily Mortimer) has died. His ex-wife and confidante Margaret (Harriet Walter) can't understand what's throwing him so much about this news as Tony turns the memories over and over again in his head.
