Spirit Awards 2022: My Personal Ballot

by Cláudio Alves

The Film Independent Spirit Awards are upon us! After a few years of hewing concerningly close to the Oscars, this year's slot of nominees feels more connected to the organization's purpose of celebrating independent cinema, even the obscure stuff. Indeed, exploring the many nominated pictures was one of the highlights of this awards season. I discovered some beautiful gems and have new artists to look for in the incoming years. Isn't that the most beautiful part of movie awards – the uncovering of heretofore unknown talents and voices? It seems right, seeing as the Spirit Awards are voted on by cinephiles, all those who become Film Independent members out of their love for the seventh art.

Halfway Mark 2021 - Fav Performances & Characters

Review: Shiva Baby

by Ben Miller

Part cringe-comedy nightmare dripping with passive aggressiveness and part look at the complexity of modern sexuality and relationships, director Emma Seligman's Shiva Baby shows a unique perspective on attending a party from hell. Rachel Sennott stars as Danielle, a college senior who starts her day having sex with her sugar daddy Max (Danny Deferarri) before heading off to a shiva with her parents Joel and Debbie (Fred Melamed and Polly Draper).  Danielle is a college senior with no real prospects after graduation and she knows this will be a frequent topic of conversation among the party-goers.  She trudges on, but sees Maya (Molly Gordon), her high school girlfriend as the belle of the ball being lauded over among the many guests.

Debbie wants Danielle to focus on her future and uses the party as an excuse to try to get her a job.  One of those outlets is Max, who used to work with Joel.  Max and Danielle play dumb and attempt to assuage any suspicions, but things get infinitely more complicated when Max's wife Kim (Dianna  Agron) shows up...

Serbia's "Father" is Amazing. And other Calgary Fest thoughts...

by Nathaniel R

"Father" wins Calgary International Film Festival

We're in an unbelievably overcrowded stretch of festivals -- AFI (a month early this year for some inexplicable reason), Middleburg, Chicago, and NewFest. And with all the movie madness, and our just concluded Montgomery Clift series, I realized with horror this weekend that I had neglected to share thoughts on the recently concluded Calgary International Film Festival.

I had the honor of being on the international narrative jury this year and after the jump, takes on the ten films we watched in ascending order of how much I dug them...
