(Ummm, haven't all these people already made these movies? Why not mix it up with a romantic comedy or a sci-fi picture?)

After the sting of Carol's snub for Best Picture just two years ago, Todd Haynes is coming back, hopefully better than ever. His new film, Wonderstruck, will be premiering at the Cannes Film Festival in a few short weeks, but will also be released through the partnering of Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions. Slotted for a limited release of October 20 with an eventual expasion in November, the studios are giving Haynes' latest effort the awards season push many fans believes he deserves.
As I am sure many of you know by this point, Wonderstruck (based off the book by Brian Selznick) reunites Haynes with Julianne Moore (at long last!) after their collaborations on Safe (1995) and Far From Heaven (2002). It tells two parallel stories-- one taking place in 1927 and the other in 1977. Moore will be joined by Michelle Williams, Amy Hargreaves, Oakes Fegley (the lead of last year's Pete's Dragon), and newcomer Millicent Simmonds.
The last time Amazon and Roadside partnered up, they produced Manchester by the Sea, which led to the biggest box office either company had seen and two Oscars for the film. Clearly, signs are positive for Wonderstruck. While we wait for the film's premiere at Cannes, let's cross our fingers and hope that sins of Carol's merciless snub will not be committed again.

Sandy Powell is always a good bet of course with 12 past nominations and 3 wins and she'll obviously be having a great time with the dual time frames and actressing of Julianne Moore. The other designers are less regular with the Academy but they've all been nominated with the exception of Ellen Mirojnick. But Mirojnick is no slouch having designed iconic pieces seen in films like Basic Instinct, Showgirls, and recently she won the Emmy for Soderbergh's Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra. She's got one of the year's (presumably) showiest gigs : Hugh Jackman's PT Barnum musical The Greatest Showman.

The Cannes lineup was announced very early this morning (time differences, don'cha know) and we're here to give you details, not just film titles. While TFE doesn't attend ($) we do follow from afar and hope to make the trek some day. The 70th Annual Cannes Film Festival runs May 17th through May 28th.

Ismael’s Ghosts (Arnaud Desplechin) French auteur Desplechin's latest will be released in the US by Magnolia. It stars French A-Listers Marion Cotillard, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Mathieu Amalric, and Louis Garrel and revolves around a filmmaker (Amalric) working on a new picture when his long dead lover Carlotta (Cotillard) returns to life sending his life into a tailspin. If you've never seen Desplechin classics Kings and Queen (2004) and A Christmas Tale (2008) get right to that!
