Oscar Morning Jitters and Madness

7:50 Good morning! I woke up with a start. In my dream, which we'll call a nightmare, it was 12:59 PM and I had completely forgotten about the Oscar nominations at 8:30ish and I was already HOURS behind. Bless the clock for talking me down. It was only 6:59 AM. All was well... for the moment.

Things I'm dying to find out: 1) What Supporting Actor will look like since it seems ripe for upheaval. 2) Which of the six Supporting Actresses with major awards traction will be left on the cutting room floor. 3) Whether The Artist or Hugo will lead the nomination count. 4) Whether The Descendants will follow in Previous Payne footsteps and miss some key expected nomination. 5) Whether The Girl With the Fincher Tattoo is really the big deal the guilds positioned it to be. 6) Everything.

You?

8:06 The radio just said "The Artist, Descendants and War Horse are expected to be nominated". Ummmm. I'm not sure Joey the horse is "expected" at this point. And leading with that film? NPR needs help.

8:14 I actually did yoga right when I woke up this morning. That's how much I'm seeking a zen place as this madness begins. Namaste. Etcetera.

8:34 The live comments on this feed from YouTube are crazed. It's all HARRY POTTER for the win. Poor muggles. They'll be so sad in a few minutes.

8:38 THE MUSIC. HERE WE GO. Bring on Jennifer Lawrence, Tom Sherak.

8:45 Holy crap. So many surprises and 9 best picture nominees. I'll update as fast as I can.

Wait, I just had the same exact dream, er.... I mean nightmare

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMatthew

I expect the original score category to be either boring and nearly identical to the golden globes OR filled with worthy nominees. Supporting actress is a going to be interesting. Also looking forward to Cinematography and Foreign Language.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHenry

I'm curious if Pina will manage a double nomination in both Documentary and Foreign Film

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterIvonne

I'm putting this out there right now:

Tate Taylor to be nominated for Best Director (instead of Fincher or Malick or whoever the 5th slot is expected to be)

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterThe Jack

I'm just really, desperately, pathetically hoping that <I>Tree of Life can manage one nomination anywhere other than Cinematography. And I can't wait to find out how Original Screenplay shakes out after the two BP players.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTim

Had a late shift, so I haven't even slept yet! Things I'm DYING to find out:

1) The surprise acting nominee with no precursor support. Who is this year's Bardem/Gyllenhaal/Linney?

2) Original Screenplay

3) How many noms for Tinker Tailor?

and finally....

4) Will Ides of March get more nods than Moneyball? I made a bet with a friend when we first saw them, with myself for Ides and him for Moneyball. I really, really want to win. The prize is ice cream, for Heaven's sake. ICE CREAM!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterWalter L. Hollmann

Walter -- as much as I understand the desire for Ice Cream, I hope you lose ;)

Matthew -- get out of my dreamsssssss

January 24, 2012 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

I had a dream Kristin Wiig got in for Actress, this will never ever ever ever ever happen (although I think she's got more chance than Charlize) but I hope my dream comes true. I also dreamt that Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close got Picture, Director, Supporting Actress, a bit of a sweep. I hope that dream stays a dream.

C'mon Bridesmaids, Drive and Tree Of Life!!!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKeegan

I was also peeking at my watch every 5 minutes to make sure I wasn't gonna miss it!
I'm dying to find out: 1) Like you, which of the supporting ladies is going to fall off the chart. 2) Is there going to be a surprise nominee (what I like to call a 'Gylenhall move'). 3) How many best picture nominees are we getting after all. And 4) As silly as it may be, I want to know how they are going to announce the Best Picture nominees?? (Will they say how they are before or leave us wondering and thinking of possible nominees in alphabetic order as they go on?!)

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCarlos

I think it will be "Drive" day.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterM

P.S. i've added the live feed to the post in case anyone hasn't refreshed their screens.

January 24, 2012 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Desperate for some interesting curveball nominations. Hoping for good showings for Drive, Bridesmaids and Take Shelter - would love Weekend to appear anywhere. Come on Michael Shannon! It was an electrifying performance. Really want Melissa M to make it !

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterChrisD

Betting that Descendants will lose out on a key nomination (probably Woodley, but what if it's Clooney?... what a surprise that would be!) Hoping to see Corey Stoll in Supporting, and 50/50 in Screenplay.

Yay for best morning of the year!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTravis

Thanks Nat! It's weird that I've seen nearly none of these films but I'm still curious about what's going to be nominated (perhaps the lack of attachment is a good thing); it does seem like a strange year, so many very good and possibly great performances, an embarrassment of riches in the acting department from the women as well as the men (for once!), but were there really any great films this year, ones we'll still be talking about in ten years?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanice

Most hoping for a wildcard (like Kirsten Dunst) in the Best Actress lineup!! fingers crossed. also.. this is so exciting, I live in the west coast and I've never gotten up this early just to see Oscar nominations. I feel like a kid waking up to see Santa Claus at 5 in the morning LOL

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBVR

I've convinced myself that Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is going to Babel its way into a Best Picture nomination. A very polarizing film that's well-executed, beautiful, and filled with strong performances could easily break the 5% threshold.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRobert G

This is the most exciting nomination morning , and so many things still up in the air. How many Best Pic nominees? I am guessing 6 ? Will Fassbender make it for Best Actor. Can Melissa McCarthy and Jonah Hill really become Oscar nominees? Is Pitt a surprise in Best Supporting Actor ?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterramification

I'm totally hoping for a Kirsten Dunst wildcard as well this morning. If Whale Rider could win a surprise nom...

also... it is 8:31!!! It needs to starts already~~~!!!!~!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJohn Ryan

@ JohnRyan - and I thought maybe it was just my computer; I've got 8:34. Step it up, AMPAS! No wonder your awards shows run behind.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanice

The critic on BBC thinks Berenice will get a Best Actress nomination. How wrong could he be!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterramification

Waiting for the nominations, one of the E! News idiots on why The Artist is such a hot Best Picture contender: "A lot of members of the Academy remember silent films."

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJ.P.

Don't they know foreign language actresses are all supporting if there's a leading male, ramification?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRobert G

@ J.P. Thanks for sharing that. That made me laugh. Damn...

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTravis

@J.P. - there is no cogent response to that idiocy, at least that I can come up with.

"Three minutes to air"? Are they still tallying the nominations?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanice

Oh SH*T y'all one minute to air!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJohn Ryan

WOW @ Best Actor...

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJohn Ryan

Can't see live from youtube in china.
Any other link?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterr

Von Sydow what a shocking nomination. And NINE best picture nominees!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterramification

Gary Oldman!!!! YES!!!!! So deserved!!!

No Tilda????? WTF?????

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

WOW at BEST ACTOR! Hurt with no Fassbender but HEY até GARY OLDMAN e DEMIAN B!

Albert Brooks out??????????????

Extremely Sh** in?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commentertony fernando

What the what?!?!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBrianZ

No Tilda :( She hit every precursor. What does this woman need to do for a lead actress nom?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterfbh

Jonah Hill? I think it's sort of cool that McCarthy got in but I suspect for the wrong reasons.

The acting catagories (esp actress) already feel disappointing in that there were so many great perfs this year.

"Extremely Loud" gets a Best Pic nod, with NO other major nominations except Best Supporting Actor? I guess enough people liked it?

Clever the way they did Best Pic, though - there was no way to tell how many until they were done.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanice

NO Tin Tin???

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

WAR HORSE?!?? I guess NPR knew something the rest of us didn't!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBrian Mullin

Oh. Em. Gee. Jonah Hill is an Academy Award nominee. In the words of Miranda Priestly, "That's all."

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

No Pina... :(

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteranna

OMG so many surprises!! NO LEONARDO DICAPRIO FOR J EDGAR!!!!!! YESSSSSS LOL

and GARY OLDMAN!!! WOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDavid

Dragon Tattoo got an editing nod and best actress, surprised it didn't sneak into Best Picture. Mara over Swinton? Really ? Albert Brooks missing is the biggest surprise but he missed out on a couple of precursors. Only 2 songs in the Best Song category, has that ever happened before?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterramification

WHile I loved the suspense of the Best Picture nominee readings...9?! Seriously??? WHy not just go with 10 for a round number lol

Best Actor whoa...and supporting actor...no brooks or stoll?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTerence

@Anna, Pina got documentary.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDominique

Say it with me now people-Oscar nominee Gary Oldman. It's about time-I'll just pretend Clooney beat out Fassy rather than Oldman and I'll feel better.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

No Michael Shannon :-( The best performance in my opinion

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterChrisD

Well, I felt surprised. I'm thrilled Brad Pitt was nominated. I didn't think he was going to make it.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterErin in Flagstaff

And not to be shallow but - Jennifer, honey, who let you out of the house wearing THAT?

I feel like I need another few minutes to go over and digest the acting noms. It doesn't really feel like too many surprises, and the surprises that were there are of the disappointing sort.

So they did throw one at the pretty young thing (Rooney Mara) after all. I'm surprised about Glenn Close, actually. I'm sure it's one of those "the nomination is the reward" kinds of things.

I'm pleased about Damien BIcher, not because I've seen the performance (I haven't) but I've read good things about him here - and he was the drug lord on Weeds, so I like him from that and I love that it's a completely different type of character.

Best Supporting Actor - so we have 2 veteran contenders? I'm assuming more people have seen Beginners, but ELAIC is more recent.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanice

I cant believe Tilda was snubbed AGAIN!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

Surprising animated category nominees am I right, Un vie de chat, Chico e Rita!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNina

@ramification - only 2 songs? Did everything really suck that badly this year?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanice

Biggest surprise of the morning?? No Michaels in Best Actor? No Albert Brooks? No 50/50? Rooney? So many?!?!?!?!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBrianZ

@ Dominique
Thanks for letting me know, that's at least something.
Do you have a link for a complete list of nominations? I haven't been able to find one yet.
