Oscar Nominations for 2011 (2012 Ceremony)

BEAR WITH ME AS I UPDATE! MORE COMING INCLUDING A PODCAST! ENTIRE OFFICIAL NOMINATION CHART IS COMPLETE (individual category pages will reflect the nominations by end of the day with more intricate updates to come)

We've finally arrived. So many shockers this year in the nominations including nine best pictures. Most people assumed, given the complicated math required to become a Best Picture nominee, that the number would be closer to five than ten. A nine nominee total indicates that there wasn't a ton of consensus. Lots of pictures had passionate bases.

Things I was right off the top of my head: If Mara made it she would bump out Tilda. I got Moneyball exactly right in each category. Supporting Actress perfect score. Chico & Rita for animated film!
Things I was wrong about off the top of my head: I overestimated the nomination tally of The Help and underestimated War Horse, Dragon Tattoo and Extremely Loud (but then didn't everyone?).

BEST PICTURE

  • The Artist Thomas Langmann, Producer
  • The Descendants Jim Burke, Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor,Producers
  • Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close Scott Rudin, Producer
  • The Help Brunson Green, Chris Columbus and Michael Barnathan, Producers
  • Hugo Graham King and Martin Scorsese, Producers
  • Midnight in Paris Letty Aronson and Stephen Tenenbaum, Producers
  • Moneyball Michael De Luca, Rachael Horovitz and Brad Pitt, Producers
  • The Tree of Life Nominees to be determined
  • War Horse Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy

FULL CHART FOR EVERY CATEGORY  -individual pages not yet complete but the chart is fully "official" now.

PODCAST - has been recorded! Waiting for iTunes to receive it.

wow?

Is Jonah Hill > Albert Brooks ??!?! LOL

So happy for Gary Oldman instead of Leo Dicaprio

So happy for Melissa McCarthy!!!!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterWendy Kroy

Never ever ever count out Daldry. Let that be a lesson for the future.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterThe Jack

No Brooks and Extremely Loud are the most shocking to me.

Just like, out of nowhere.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBeau

Does anyone else notice that 4 of the 9 best pic do not have any acting noms?? weird!!!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterWendy Kroy

Rooney Mara, as it should it be, now if she could only win.

Glad to see Malick get a nomination, he fully deserved it.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkatie

When they put up the pic of Chastain from The Tree of Life, I thought, "Ooooh." But then, nada.

Anyway, I'm glad Mara slipped in--I was sick of how predictable Best Actress was turning out. But it's a shame it was at the expense of Tilda and not Glenn.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBia

Extremely happy for The Tree of Life's two big noms, Gary Oldman, A Separation's screenplay nod, and the actually surprising animation field.

Sad for Tilda, Fassbender, Brooks, but at least we got some surprises.

Drive got 1 technical!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSeeking Amy

Albert Brooks was good, but really that performance was just ok in my opinion, other actors have done that type of character much better in the past. It's a surprise he's not in given the predictions, but not a massive one. Jonah Hill was great in Moneyball.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterramification

No Fassy, no glory.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAdriana

I have to say, for the first time watching the nominations read live, it was a pretty thrilling experience. Although I was disappointed with a few of the surprises, at least it keeps things interesting and exciting. The biggest disappointment for me though, has to be the fact that Shailene Woodley missed out on a nomination. I really enjoyed the Descendants, and Woodley was by far the best part about the movie. The underwater scream still stays in my mind as a lasting image. However, I had a feeling this was coming. She's the Mila Kunis of this year.

The nominations that made me the most happy was to see Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig recognized for their hilarious work on Bridesmaids. It's great to see a movie like Bridesmaids do so well commercially and in the awards season. Here's to hoping Kristen Wiig gets to keep making great movies!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMichael

Am I the only one that got slightly confused when they used Chastain's image from 'The Tree if Life' even though she's nominated for 'The Help'? For a couple of seconds I didn't know whether to believe my eyes or my ears!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCarlos

Brad Pitt, please win the Oscar on February 26!!!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBVR

What are the Best Song nominees?

Hoping for an Elton John snub!!! haha

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterWendy Kroy

These noms just...suck.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKevin P. Durkin

Bad nominations or WORST nominations? This obsession with Stephen Daldry films has got to end, seriously. This is like last year on steroids, every feel good, schlocky picture they could possibly nominate, they did.

Also, when did taking a dump in a sink make you worthy of a best supporting nod?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKyle

Well, Tintin got in for Original Score, so not a complete snub?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJohn

And did Transformers 3 really get the same number of nominations as Deathly Hallows?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJohn

I'm happy Malick got in but I wish they'd kicked Jonah Hill from the Supporting Actor and gone 100% old man. And Gary Oldman! I thought Tinker Tailor woulkd be stronger in the crafts- no Art Direction?!

So many thoughts...

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSVG

Kyle, did you not see the rest of Bridesmaids? lol

She did more than deficate in a sink !! ha

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterWendy Kroy

@Kyle, I would rather they start giving comedic performances some recognition, comedy is very hard to pull off and its hardly ever recognized, so I am ok with McCarthy getting in for this.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterramification

WTF!!!! Only TWO Best Song Nominees?????
Where are the songs from The Help, Albert Noobs and Gnomeo & Juliet?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMarcos

WHEEEEEE!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

Sooooo many surprises today!

Just wondering, is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close this year's Blind Side? Sandra Bullock...

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRyan M

OMG my film is an oscar nominee!!!!

Best Costume Design!!! Arianne Phillips!

Thank you academy...
xoxo Madonna

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMADONNA

Wendy - "Man or Muppets" from The Muppets and "Really Rio" from Rio (which movie was that?)

nat I assume you're pleased that A Separation also snagged Best Original Screenplay even if it didn't get the Best Pic award you were hoping for.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanice

Replace Clooney with Fassbender and I'd be happy to see any of those guys go home with the Oscar. Only two nominees for best song should make for a shorter cermony, hopefully.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMaeve

Proof that there is no stopping John Williams, even though he won't win for either film. This is also the first time I've missed seeing a Best Picture nominee prior to the announcement since Letters from Iwo Jima. I guess I'll be seeing Extremely Loud this weekend.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

WTF @ Only *2* Best Song nominees!!!

They really need to change the rules in this category or ELIMINATE it altogether.

It's becoming a joke!!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDavid

The nine BP nominees thing is very interesting. Evidently Academy voters are generous with their #1s, and if we can get 9 in a year like this I think it should be achievable most years.

Clear sailing for Christopher Plummer.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSean C.

No one seems to have noticed that THE HELP was snubbed for Adapted Screenplay! Isn't that huge? That's the second biggest shocker after Extremely Loud's Best Picture nomination. It shows that support for THE HELP is weaker than we all thought. In fact outside of the acting categories, THE HELP received no other nominations than Best Picture.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJon

Surprised Glenn Close and Mary J Blige didn't get in for Best Song. So weird.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterramification

Also Oscar's official website is funky. It only lists four nominations for Art Direction, forgetting Midnight in Paris (that film's total is 4 nominations as a result, not 3).

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJon

it's time to show off people!

my March 2011 Best Actress Predictions:

1) Meryl Streep
2) Glenn Close
3) Michelle Williams
4) Rooney Mara
5 Jodie Foster

Yayyyy I'm so good!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterYavor

How does DRIVE have the same number of nominations as W./E. ??!!

shame shame shame lol

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDavid

@ramification - I'm sure "screenplay" is a "safe" catagory, but I was also glad to see the love for Kristen Wiig's "Bridesmaids" screenplay. (How many graduates of SNL have the words "Oscar nominee" next to their names? Does Bill Murray even have that, for at least one of his amazing performances? I forget.) It'd be nice to see Wiig continuing to do more major work (her turn in Rollerball was very memorable and one of my favorite things about that movie, so underplayed).

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanice

Hopefully Rooney Mara can start cracking a smile now. Seriously, has there been a more miserable presence on the red carpet in the last few years?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterramification

Young Adult was shut out. No Diablo Cody even?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDavid

Janice - Bill Murray was nominated (and should have won) for Lost In Translation. Eddie Murphy is the other SNL alum that comes to mind right away that is part of the club.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterramification

@Janice

You mean Wiig in Whip It, right? But I love the idea of her in a terrible John McTiernan sports thriller with Chris Klein and LL Cool J.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJasper

Janice-Murray got in for Lost in Translation.

Ramification-Have you met Kristen Stewart? :)

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

Wendy,
Yes, I saw the movie, it was cute at best. The performance was no better than say...Zach Galifinakis in the Hangover. Comedy should be awarded, but only if its warranted. We're not exactly talking about Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein here.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKyle

Joan Cusack and Dan Aykroyd are also SNL alumni that have Oscar nominations.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

Well, you called it with the Fassbender snub (though, just like in the live chat last Sunday, I'm still not very pleased about it). However, it's partly made up to me by the fact that Tree of Life got three big nominations, and A Separation got the screenplay nod! I mean, hey, knowing the academy, it won't win, but at least it's been recognized for being the phenomenal screenplay that it is. I was also hoping for it to take a Best Picture spot, but hey, this is better than nothing!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRob

JASPER- that literally made me LOL at work. too funny!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDavid

@ramification and John T : thank you both - clearly I'm too lazy to do the research on my own :)
(And Murray definitely deserved that nom. He probably should have been nommed Best Supporting for The Royal Tennebaums, IMO. Too bad he seems to have retired from acting? He had such a fantastic run for a while.)

@Jasper - oops. Yeah. I meant Whip It. Just checking to see if everyone's awake. (Clearly I am not.)

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanice

I don't know whether to be happy or sad with these nominations. Loved the surprises, but really upset that Drive only got 1. And I know I was getting my hopes up with Melancholia but it's still a bummer to not see it get any.

Most Disgusting Snub goes to Jonah Hill in replacement of Albert Brooks. Totally just absurd. Jonah Hill? Over a phonemenal actor in an even better film? I can't continue typing or I will just throw my computer against the wall.

Best Actress looks nice! Best Actor is still missing Gosling. He gets the award in my eyes.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJohn

Does this mean that Elton John's husband is going to go on another rant ??? This time being subbed for Oscar? lol we shall see.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVictoria Grayson

@Janice: SNL alumni with Oscar nominations, in addition to Kristen Wiig:

Dan Aykroyd (Best Supporting Actor, Driving Miss Daisy)
Robert Downey Jr. (Best Actor, Chaplin, Best Supporting Actor, Tropic Thunder)
Joan Cusack (Best Supporting Actress twice, Working Girl and In & Out)
Bill Murray (Best Actor, Lost In Translation)
Michael McKean (Best Song, "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" from A Mighty Wind)
Eddie Murphy (Best Supporting Actor, Dreamgirls)
Randy Quaid (Best Supporting Actor, The Last Detail)

None of them has won.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJ.P.

Other than ignoring Young Adult, I'm quite happy with these nominees. How can you hate on surprise nominations for Bichir, Oldman, Sydow, Mara, Jane Eyre, and "Man or Muppet," among others?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRobert G

17 is a magic number! =)

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTerris

I knew the Descendants would get lots of love I don't share. Shocked about Extremely Loud and Von Sydow, but pleased to know the Oscars can still surprise me.
