Awards Leftovers: The Editors, The DPs, The Gays

The Editors
Do you have any thoughts you need to get off your chest about the ACE Eddies? They barely received any play coming as they did on the heels of the Oscar nominations but I wanted to mention them anyway since I love 'the invisible art' and it's what I think I would have done had I gone into filmmaking (if not casting). This year their drama nominees Argo, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty, Skyfall, all received Oscar nominations but for the latter which was bumped to make way for Silver Linings Playbook, the only Comedy recipient to transfer with AMPAS. Also nominated in comedy or musical: Les Misérables, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom, and Ted.

"I know this will sound batshit crazy but your editing is just not as good as the editing in Silver Linings Playbook! which is also better than Skyfall"

This is not meant as a knock on Playbook since I know its fans are sensitive about my generally "meh" reaction to it (and distaste when pushed) but I actually have no problem with its nomination here in comedy. But that it should be the one chosen over the impeccably odd combo of razor sharp pathos and cool comic timing of Moonrise? And then bump out the action stylings of Skyfall? Me no understand.

Likewise I forgot to mention the
American Society of Cinematographers who chose Seamus McGarvey from Ireland  for Anna Karenina, Danny Cohen from Britain for Les Misérables, Claudio Miranda from Chile for Life of Pi, Janusz Kaminski from Poland for Lincoln, and Roger Deakins from Britain for Skyfall. All of these men went on to Oscar nominations but for Cohen who was replaced by Robert Richardson of Massachusetts for Django Unchained.

The Gays
Another group that waited to announce their nominees until Oscar time was The Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association or "GALECA" who hand out the Dorian Awards. Full disclaimer: I became a member this year. I'm happy to be a part of it but, as with my BFCA membership, I don't always want to be associated with the results ;) That said, I joined this group because I like the presence of groups who, by their very nature, are forced to step outside the Oscar pool. You can't exactly nominate Argo and Lincoln for your LGBT FILM OF THE YEAR prize you know? Well... maybe 'Argo Fuck Yourself' and Lincoln. (haha. i'm here all week) But of course they also have a FILM OF THE YEAR prize which finds room for the titles you'll be totally sick of by Oscar night.

LGBT FILM OF THE YEAR

I assume Keep the Lights On can't lose since it's the only LGBT film that's also nominated for Film of the Year but I'm personally trying to decide between Gayby and Perks for my vote. Both are so adorable I just want to cuddle with them.

Complete Gayness after the jump...

The rest of the nominees for the Dorian Awards

FILM OF THE YEAR

I wanted to illustrate this category with a picture of Ben Affleck's chest from Argo but couldn't find one. Instead enjoy the depressive lovers of Keep the Lights On Thure Lindhart and Zachary Booth

  • Argo (Warner Bros.)
  • Beasts of the Southern Wild (Fox Searchlight)
  • Keep the Lights On (Music Box)
  • Les Miserables (Universal)
  • Lincoln (DreamWorks/Touchstone)
  • Moonrise Kingdom (Focus)

Gorgeous lineup! Though my least favorite is the specifically gay one which make me kinda sad.

FILM PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR - ACTOR

  • Alan Cumming / Any Day Now (Music Box)
  • Bradley Cooper / Silver Linings Playbook (Weinstein)
  • Daniel Day-Lewis / Lincoln (DreamWorks/Touchstone)
  • Hugh Jackman / Les Miserables (Universal)
  • Joaquin Phoenix / The Master (Weinstein)
  • John Hawkes / The Sessions (Fox Searchlight)

So close to the Oscar Best Actor Lineup

FILM PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR - ACTRESS

Rust & Bone's scorching hot couple. Oscar didn't want a threesome.

  • Anne Hathaway / Les Miserables (Universal)
  • Emmanuelle Riva / Amour (Sony Pictures Classics)
  • Jennifer Lawrence / Silver Linings Playbook (Weinstein)
  • Jessica Chastain / Zero Dark Thirty (Sony/Columbia)
  • Marion Cotillard / Rust and Bone (Sony Pictures Classics)

This is one way to avoid Category Fraud. Don't make a distinct between "supporting" and "lead". The weird thing here is that the gays stereotypically love actresses and yet this is one of the only categories with only 5 nominees. Not sure what happened.

DOCUMENTARY OF THE YEAR

  • Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry (IFC)
  • Bully (Weinstein)
  • Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel (Samuel Goldwyn)
  • How to Survive a Plague (Sundance Selects)
  • The Invisible War (Cinedigm)
  • The Queen of Versailles (Magnolia)

VISUALLY STRIKING FILM OF THE YEAR
(honoring a production of stunning beauty, from art direction to cinematography)

elbow sex!

  • Anna Karenina (Focus)
  • Cloud Atlas (Warner Bros.)
  • Les Miserables (Universal)
  • Life of Pi (Fox)
  • Moonrise Kingdom (Focus)

CAMPY FLICK OF THE YEAR

  • 2016: Obama’s America (Rocky Mountain)
  • Cloud Atlas (Warner Bros.)
  • Magic Mike (Warner Bros.)
  • The Paperboy (Millennium)
  • Pitch Perfect (Universal)
  • Rock of Ages (Warner Bros./New Line)

I object to calling Magic Mike "campy" but I love it so should I vote for it? Conundrum. And now that I know my fellow gay journalists have seen The Paperboy there's absolutely NO excuse for Kidman missing out in their Actress category... especially since they're missing a nominee!

UNSUNG FILM OF THE YEAR

  • Bernie (Millennium)
  • The Cabin in the Woods (Lionsgate)
  • Chronicle (Fox)
  • Holy Motors (Indomina)
  • Looper (Sony)
  • Your Sister’s Sister (IFC)

Define "unsung". Holy Motors is on, like, every top ten list. Bernie was oversung... at least its praises were.

TV DRAMA OF THE YEAR

  • American Horror Story: Asylum (FX)
  • Breaking Bad (AMC)
  • Game of Thrones (HBO)
  • Homeland (Showtime)
  • Mad Men (AMC)

I'm voting for Mad Men -- it's not because I'm redundant (y'all know how I feel about the Emmy tendency to award the same shows endlessly -- but that it really is the best year after year after year. I think it's the only television show I've ever seen that I would vote for each and every year of its existence. Even Buffy had lesser seasons. I'm not sure if Matt Weiner made a deal with the devil or what but every season of that show is pure gold.

TV COMEDY OF THE YEAR

  • The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
  • Girls (HBO)
  • Happy Endings (ABC)
  • Louie (FX)
  • Modern Family (ABC)

Voting Louie or Girls here. Help me decide.

TV PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR - ACTOR

  • Aaron Paul / Breaking Bad (AMC)
  • Damian Lewis / Homeland (Showtime)
  • Jesse Tyler Ferguson / Modern Family (ABC)
  • Jim Parsons / The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
  • Jon Hamm / Mad Men (AMC)

I'm guessing the gays vote for pocket hottie Aaron Paul.

TV PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR - ACTRESS

  • Claire Danes / Homeland (Showtime)
  • Jessica Lange / American Horror Story: Asylum (FX)
  • Julianne Moore / Game Change (HBO)
  • Edie Falco / Nurse Jackie (Showtime)
  • Lena Dunham / Girls (HBO)
  • Sofia Vergara / Modern Family (ABC)

Julianne Moore vs. Claire Danes. Ouch. Julianne is magic in Game Change but Claire Danes on Homeland is... wait are we talking about Season 1 or Season 2. This is important!

TV MUSICAL PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR

the most infamous of all of Smash's musical numbers

  • Darren Criss, “Teenage Dream,” Glee (Fox)
  • De’Borah Garner, The Fray’s “You Found Me,” The Voice (NBC)
  • Jennifer Hudson, Tribute to Whitney Houston, The Grammys (CBS)
  • Megan Hilty and Katharine McPhee, “Let Me Be Your Star,” Smash (NBC)
  • Raza Jaffrey, Katharine McPhee and cast: “A Thousand and One Nights,” Smash (NBC)

I'm voting "Let Me Be Your Star" again.

LGBT TV SHOW OF THE YEAR

  • American Horror Story: Asylum (FX)
  • Happy Endings (ABC)
  • Modern Family (ABC)
  • The New Normal (NBC)
  • Smash (NBC)

I'm voting "Smash" -- duh! --  but I have absolutely no doubt that American Horror Story will win given that the LGBT community is basically erecting Tower of Babel high statues in Jessica Lange's honor. At least virtually.

CAMPY TV SHOW OF THE YEAR

  • 666 Park Avenue (ABC)
  • American Horror Story: Asylum (FX)
  • GCB (ABC)
  • Here Comes Honey Boo Boo (TLC)
  • Liz & Dick (Lifetime)
  • Smash (NBC)

I guess "American Horror" wins both?

UNSUNG TV SHOW OF THE YEAR

  • Bunheads (ABC Family)
  • Catfish (MTV)
  • Fringe (Fox)
  • GCB (ABC)
  • Happy Endings (ABC)
  • Parenthood (NBC)

I love Bunheads. That is all.

TV OR MOVIE TITLE OF THE YEAR

  • Don’t Trust the B—— in Apt. 23 (ABC)
  • GCB (ABC)
  • I Was Impaled (Discovery Fit & Health)
  • I’m Having Their Baby (Oxygen)
  • It’s Christmas, Carol! (Hallmark Channel)

 This category. LOL.

The Perks of Being Ezra MillerWE’RE WILDE ABOUT YOU (NEWCOMER AWARD)

  • Andrew Rannells
  • Anna Camp
  • Ben Whishaw
  • Eddie Redmayne
  • Ezra Miller

Eddie Redmayne isn't a newcomer to me but is newly coming on strong.

I have no idea who might win this though... perhaps Ezra Miller?

WILDE WIT OF THE YEAR
(honoring a performer, writer or commentator whose observations both challenge and amuse)

  • Bill Maher
  • Chelsea Handler
  • Jon Stewart
  • Lena Dunham
  • Sarah Silverman
  • Stephen Colbert

WILDE ARTIST OF THE YEAR
(honoring a truly groundbreaking force in the fields of film, theatre and/or television)

  • Lena Dunham
  • Louis C.K.
  • Ryan Murphy
  • Tony Kushner
  • Tig Notaro

TIMELESS AWARD, honoring an actor or performer whose exemplary career has been marked by character, wisdom and wit, goes to …

  • Sir Ian McKellen

I love Sir Ian. I think he'll forgive me for skipping The Hobbit since you know I've actually paid to see him on stage and in some of his non super-powered movies.

Nathaniel, what are your feelings on Happy Endings? I see it was nominated for quite a few categories but since you didn't mention it I'm guessing you never watched it or don't care much about it. For me it's the one comedy that has me constantly laughing out loud, even if I think that Parks and Rec, and Community are better. Anyway, just curious.

And, since you asked, Louie > Girls, imo (though I'd vote for Happy Endings)

Oh, and fun Globes trivia for Sunday, or at least I thought so: 3 of the 5 nominees for Best Actress in Miniseries/TV movie have the distinction of being in the select group of actresses up for two Academy Awards in the same evening (Lange with Frances and Tootsie, SigWeav with Gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl and Julianne Moore with Far from Heaven and The Hours).

Ben Whishaw is a newcomer? He was Bob Dylan five years ago!

'Gayby' was enjoyable enough, but 'Perks' is superior to it in nearly every way.

My favorite thing about SLP was the editing and camera work, which really captured the sort of manic energy of both the screwball genre and the characters themselves, so I was quite pleased with that nomination. I liked Cooper a lot, though my favorite of the performances there was actually Chris Tucker.

It bears repeating that Cotillard and Riva don't make sense without Schoenaerts and Trintignant. I've decided to put the blame on their complicated surnames for the constant snubbing.

I miss Turner in The Perfect Family and Darren Criss ambiguous rendition of Gotye's Somebody That I Used to Know".

PS Girls

January 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

I'd vote for Louie and Julianne. And I think the Oscars should add "Visually Stunning Film of the Year" as a category (though they'd probably just give that to the Lincoln of the year).

January 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

+1 for happy endings

January 12, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterpar3182

Wait! I thought you had issues with Smash and the internalized homophobia of the main gay storyline...

PS Vote for Julianne.

January 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Peggy Sue: I 100% agree - the attention for Riva, Cotillard and their movies is earned and gratifying, but it's absurd that they're consistently nominated for things without their male counterparts.
I don't think I can help you with the Louie/Girls. I think Girls is more consistently excellent, but Louie has higher highs, if that helps.

January 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMike in Canada

I would barely nominate SLP for anything, what an overhyped movie. Say what you will about Anna Karenina, the film had impeccable production values.

January 12, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGabriel Oak

It better be Season 2, cuz she was extraordinary in that yo! Honestly.
