Globe Predictions? Let's Go Out on a Few Limbs...
Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 7:16AM This Monday morning very bright and early Don Cheadle, Laura Dern, and Anna Kendrick will announce the 74th annual Golden Globe Predictions. Though the media likes to take easy shots at the Globes each year, if you look through their history of awardage their ratios of great decisions to bad ones is about the same as any organizations. What's more they definitely afford themselves the opportunity to be more daring than Oscar does with their doubled categories. The Comedy/Musical categories are sometimes wasted on star-f***ing it's true (The Tourist anyone?) but more often than not it allows for "lighter" fare which, let's face it, can age better than biopics or message movies to have its day in the sun.
Don Cheadle (Miles Ahead), Laura Dern (The Founder), and Anna Kendrick (Mike & Dave...) will announce. Only Cheadle might show up as a nominee...
What might be nominated this year? We've never claimed to be good at predicting the Globes but let's all ponder the possibilities together after the jump...

Why should lead actors have all the Drama OR Comedy fun. They really should have two more acting categories if they're going to have such bifurcated pleasures. After all there are far more performances by supporting players each year than by leads. If the Globes did that wouldn't it be fun to see lists like so...?

I predict Anna Kendrick will look super-awake and perky at that early hour, and that Laura Dern will be described as "bold" and "fearless" just for standing next to her.
I predict that they will come up with the best nominees of the season (of course they seem like the only group capable of thinking outside the box enough to nominate Ralph Fiennes in Supporting Actor). Despite this, a select group of awards pundits will still spend tomorrow making dated Pia Zadora jokes at their expense.
I think The Lobster is going to surprise. I have it for Picture (C/M), Actor, Supporting Actress (Weisz), and Screenplay.
Has HFPA declared Viola a leading actress for Fences? They made that call for Alicia Vikander and Rooney Mara before the nominations were announced last year.
There are so many possibilities for Best Pixture Drama. If this were 2010, I could even see Allied making it in despite its middling reviews. But the Globes have been much more discerning in the past few years (remember Greta Gerwig's nom for Frances Ha? Even the freaking Spirit Awards snubbed her) since The Tourist embarrassment, so I have Arrival/Jackie/Manchester/Moonlight/Silence. If six nominees, Lion will squeeze in. You know Harvey will find a way.
Pretty sure Davis was accepted in supporting by the HFPA.
Erik -- whatever. i like to have fun with these things.
Volvagia -- Critics Choice is so fucked up that they don't even categorize things so it's just whatever you want. and there are also no "drama" categories making the "comedy" and other categories especially suspicious i.e. meaning regular "best film" just means "best drama" which sucks. so no, Captain Fantastic is not a comedy. It's not a comedy at all. I can't even fathom that nomination unless people didn't actually see the movie but were like "i heard Viggo was good in that movie where he wears the funny red suit"

I understand Michael Keaton is up for Best Comedy/Musical Actor. And yes, as far as I'm concerned Viggo Mortensen is up for Best Drama Actor.
Keaton is officially competing in Drama.
Nathaniel - do you find this an especially difficult year to predict the Globes in some categories? I am having a crazy hard time with Motion Picture Drama. There are so many possible scenarios that could happen this year, more than normal.
At the moment I have: Fences, Hell or High Water, Lion, Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight. But Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, Hidden Figures, Loving, Silence or Sully could easily crash that.
I totally agree that Captain Fantastic is a drama... but I expect them to nominate him in the comedy category on account of the colorfulness of the movie... the should call it best performance by an actor in a comedy or musical or quirky drama? lol
Sally Field getting nominated would be a God ordianed miracle, I think they would probably go with Hailee Stienfeld or perhaps Zellweger, since they've been more than welcoming to her and the threequel did get really good reviews and was a huge foreign success and that would make her 3 for 3.
I would be shocked by any "Deadpool" nominations, but it would be worth it just for all the confusion that would cause at Marvel. (Like, of all the superhero movies in recent years, this is the one that could break through with awards?)

The Globes aren't fans of Viola Davis despite nominating her multiple times. It's only natural for them to deny her the category upgrade.
Rizz -- they aren't actually kind to actresses in high school comedies though (which is why i dont think Steinfeld is happening) -- the place they llike the young starlets is on TV dramas.
Although I's certain it won't happen, I'd like to see Chris Pine grab a nod. I'd put him ahead of Garfield.
I still am looking for Ben Foster in supporting. And Jesse Eisenberg in comedy for 'Café Society."
Is there any precedent for an actor to go leading at the Globes and supporting at the Oscars the way Hugh Grant is being pushed? It's a worthy performance that should be recognized by the Academy but I fear category confusion leaving him out of the top five in both categories at the Oscars.
@Ready - Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago, Jamie Lee Curtis in True Lies, Maggie Smith in California Suite. I'm sure this has happened to a male in Comedy before but who knows. This isn't that big of a tactic in the Drama categories.

I've long wished that the Golden Globes would double their supporting for the exact reasons Nathaniel stated. It was the one aspect that I liked about the Golden Satellite awards.

Supporting Actress - Drama: Joan Allen "Room", Amber Heard "The Danish Girl", Rachel McAdams "Spotlight" (WINNER), Sarah Paulson "Carol", and Yolandi Visser "Chappie." I can't get down with the category fraud placements of JJL, Mara, and Vikander.
Supporting Actor - Comedy/Musical: Richard Kind "Inside Out" (WINNER), Kevin Kline "Ricki and the Flash", Jude Law "Spy", Michael Peña "Ant-Man", and Michael Shannon "The Night Before."
Supporting Actor - Drama: Kyle Chandler "Carol", Emory Cohen "Brooklyn" (WINNER), Paul Giamatti "Straight Outta Compton", Sean Harris "Macbeth", and Liev Schreiber "Spotlight." Personally, Mark Ruffalo felt like more of a lead character in "Spotlight" so he's on my personal Lead Actor ballot.
Nathaniel- That's true, I guess the teen comedy would be to be a pretty big box office success ala Easy A but I guess Edge of Seventeen stumbled there.

I think Sing Street will make its way into Comedy-Musical, and in my dreams, Walsh-Peelo gets in too. Tom Bennett in Love & Friendship, Alden Ehrenrich in Hail Caesar, and Ralph Fiennes in A Bigger Splash are the most deserving male supporting performances of the year, and I am already preparing myself to calm the outrage their constant snubbing will provoke inside me.
PLEASE someone tell me if there is any conceivable way Viola could be seen as Supporting in Fences. From what I remember of the stage version it was borderline, but definitely more on the co-lead side than the Supporting side. And yet critic's groups keep bending to the damn campaign! WHY don't they listen to their own hearts and minds and put her where she belongs?!?
Dave S: 1. Globe Comedy nods aren't big, though, and 2. Marvel doesn't really make full comedies. They're funnier than the Distinguished Competition's movies, sure, but that's not hard and doesn't really make them comedies.
I don't have predictions for the movie categories, more wants for the TV categories lol.
I want The Crown nominated, especially John Lithgow. I want OITNB to be recognized for what was a truly devastating (in a good way) fourth season. I want Paulson to win for the OJ mini-series. And there are probably other wants I want too. But I can't remember then right now.
