We had this conversation in the nick of time yesterday, because I just saw EWS!! and utterly hated it.
Oh no!
No, it's good. As you prove here with Midnight Special, you're better than I am at hating something without becoming a killjoy. You and Joe and our listeners all dodged a bullet.
Well, at least everyone likes Purple Rain.
Thanks for the great podcast, guys!
I get the impression that you're trying to not be so Oscar-focused all of the time, which is great and I'll listen to the podcast whatever... but listening to you guys talking briefly about the Slumdog year made me think that I would love for you guys to a series of podcasts dedicated to individual Oscar years. It would be cool to hear your thoughts on the ceremonies and the seasons and your opinions on the films and everything. Especially from the 90s before the blog began.
Man, this is my favorite podcast. Keep up the good work.
So happy to see the podcast is back, and with 2 movies I've seen!
I like Jeff Nichols, though I wasn't crazy about his latest effort (I love Mud), but he has a tendency to cast excellent actresses - Chastain, Sarah Paulson, Reese Witherspoon, Kirsten Dunst - and not give them much to do. It's also interesting that, though he tends to use the same actors repeatedly (Sam Shepard and Joel Edgerton in addition to his muse Michael Shannon) he's never cast an actress twice. I get the sense that he's a very "male" director. I know there's a lot of optimism for Ruth Negga's performance in Loving, but I wonder if that movie, too, will focus more on the men than on her character. My guess is that Shannon has a bigger role than anyone anticipates.
@Suzanne: I discussed that with my film group; it is kind of odd, the gender imbalance, especially because Chastain and Witherspoon speak so effusively about how much they loved Nichols and the movies that resulted from their collaborations.
Yay I got my wish! Thanks for this podcast Nathaniel.
Two Cate impressions, and an Okonedo mention. Is this heaven? No it's TFE podcast.
Everybody wants some notes on a scandal.

So disappointed in EWS!! So little to care about in the stakes-free existence of these pretty vacant dudes.
@Suzanne - I mostly agree except I do think Chastain, as the co-lead, had quite a good role and did a great job with it. Yes, it was really the husband's story, but she really had to take charge at certain points, especially the end.
How was Blake Jenner in EWS? I felt he always showed signs of promise on Glee (especially in spite of the show was when he arrived,) but the trailers seem to indicate that he is nothing more than a standard everyman in the movie.
MSP -- he was fine though it's a bit of a blank role, all the showy stuff going to the supporting players. He's really our surrogate arriving in this new world (most of the characters are sophomores or juniors or seniors but he's the newbie.
djdeeday & suzanne - Chastain is totally the winner in Nichols actresses thus far. she somehow found a lot to play without there being much there (as is the case we all agree)
Every student at least once in his life asked for help, as he faced the problems of writing an essay. I want to give you an article https://121clicks.com/tutorials/tips-tricks-writing-research-paper-on-photography with tips and tricks for writing a research paper on photography. I found it very interesting to read it because as with any topic you need to write a research paper on, this particular topic has many angles or subtopics to consider.
