Golden Globe Nominations 2017

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has reached its diamond anniversary. Alfre Woodard and Sharon Stone announced the nominations. Here are the Globe nominations in all their glory and folly (it's always a combo of the two with any awards body... though people tend to be harsher on the Globes in this perception matter). The biggest surprise was the big love for Ridley Scott's All the Money in the World (which no other awards group had screened to date) but the Golden Globes do like to be first as is always evident in their TV nominations which are generally quite favorable to new series (note the love for The Handmaid's Tale, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, and more). As is also their habit they embraced a musical for their comedy/musical category giving a Best Picture nomination to The Greatest Showman.
Among the saddest snubs (discussed in fuller detail here) were Jake Gyllenhaal for Stronger (though sister Maggie was nominated again for her amazing work on The Deuce), Regina Hall for Comedy Actress (somehow they needed Helen Mirren again), and a complete shutout for three high profile Comedies or Musicals: Girls Trip, Beauty and the Beast, and The Big Sick.

These results are as to be expected too. The HFPA rarely pass up the chance to honor a musical in the category so it was either The Greatest Showman or Beauty and the Beast. They opted for the more recent watch (and also the better movie, if you ask me, but I am a known B&B hater -- a stiff awkward gawdy copy of the classic animated feature).
The film that has to be hurting from this lineup is The Big Sick which was tailor-made for this kind of honor and has been campaigning a lot (something the Globes usually respond to) and was somehow passed over. I blame the recency effect of I Tonya and The Disaster Artist.

Three cheers for Emma Stone's best work since Easy A getting at least one awards season honor. What is Helen Mirren doing here for a film no one cares about? Well the HFPA are known Mirren obsessives with 15 nominations and 3 wins over the years. The big conspicuous miss here is Emma Watson (Beauty and the Beast) who seemed right up their alley celebrity-wise but we were rooting for Regina Hall (Girls Trip)

Ansel Elgort is the surprise (though we did predict him for fun) since people like Baby Driver a lot and the only reason it isn't competing for bigger prizes (given the fanfare for it this year) is that it's neither "serious" nor brand new. It'll be interesting to see if Franco takes this with ease or if the Globes (which have known to be surprising with Comedy winners) go in a different direction.

Michelle Williams arrives as a last moment spoiler. Does she deliver in the film or is this just the Globes being their 'we like whatever we just watched!' selves? This lineup is, alas, not good news for Annette Bening in Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool who probably needed it to boost her not opening till the very last second profile.

Where is Jake Gyllenhaal for Stronger? Why did people skip that movie? If you're curious about the lack of public response to Roman Israel Esq though Denzel is usually so bankable, I'd read this review from Pajiba. I haven't yet seen the film but this seems as astute a call as anyone as to why no one seemed to care when the film arrived.

This list is 60% women of color despite the fact that Tiffany Haddish who has been rising in Oscar nomination buzz for Girls Trip missed out. Holly Hunter, long expected to show at the Oscar nominations for The Big Sick, was also pushed out. But then the HFPA clearly didn't respond to The Big Sick. It seems remarkable that Hong Chau, who is not yet a celebrity in the way the Globes prefer, has been able to maintain buzz given the huge downward buzz turn on Downsizing. The movie is far more interesting as a movie that people are prepared to admit for whatever reason. For what it's worth these cold shoulders happen every year. Critics and the public and awards bodies need to be in just the right mood for anything divisive.

Hammer was a shoo-in given the Globes love of glamorous stars but this is still quite a disappointing result for Michael Stuhlbarg who is even better than Hammer in the film (and a true supporting player unlike the film's top billed star). If SAG matches these results Wednesday that's your Oscar lineup. But we think we'll see a bit more variation and thus more suspense for Oscar nomination morning.

No Jordan Peele. No Greta Gerwig. No Dee Rees. No Luca Guadagnino. The Globes rejected their opportunities for diversity here which is not typical for them, all told. They've been kinder to female directors, gay directors, and directors of color than Oscar has over the years (in the past they've nominated Ava DuVernay and Spike Lee and Barbra Streisand and Todd Haynes to name some examples who've never had the parallel Oscar honor.)

Looks like Mariah Carey and Mary J Blige will be at the Globes. It's always been hilarious to us that the Globes Song category is so much more celebrity driven than Oscar's parallel category since the stars don't actually perform at the Globes but they do (sometimes) at the Oscars. This category is not historically very predictive of Oscar so don't assume these are the future Oscar nominees.

All high profile films. The only one we knew would happen was First They Killed My Father since the Globes have been in Angelina Jolie's corner since before she was a global sensation (she had her first win there even prior to her breakout in Gia). Don't be surprised if it wins and Jolie nabs her fourth Golden Globe. All of these films are in the running for Oscar's foreign film prize (which is not always the case as the Globes have different eligibility requirements).

So long to the Oscar chances of Michelle Pfeiffer, Jennifer Lawrence, Annette Bening, and Jake Gylenhaal. Better luck next year but I don't expect to see you.
I personally blame the lack of turnout for Roman J Esq. Israel to 1) The title--one of the worst I can think of. Erin Brockavich this is not. 2) The distribution. It went limited release in the beginning, like Fences, trying to repeat that magic. They should have released it on 3 K screens opening weekend and trusted in Denzel to fill the seats.
It's not his best movie, but it's a lot better than the reviews suggest. Same with 'Wonder Wheel' I'd add.

Wait. You've seen Greatest Showman? I'd heard questionable buzz so are you saying it's actually good or just better than B&B?
Politics aside, Patryk, Kidman was great in Big Little Lies, as she always is. I'm not saying that Mirren is not, but Mirren does have an odd history of being nominated for work in second rate films and Kidman tends to only make it in if her project has been fairly popular. (Did she even get nods for "Birth" and "Dogville"? Based on the work alone, she absolutely should have.)
What torpedoed Roman J Israel's box office potential was 2 months of mediocre buzz from the TIFF screening, before the actual release date. The way this film was platformed (as a festival/awards season/prestige movie) it needed reviews and critics on it's side. Look at how films like Surburbicon performmed (which had the starpower of Damon, Clooney and Julianne Moore to promote it). Weak festival response can kill these types of films, even for Denzel.
Had Sony marketed Roman J.Isreal as just another wide release Denzel thriller (no festival screenings. Throw it out on 2.5k screens) then it probably would have performed way better. But they were banking on prestige and great reviews based on Dan Gilroy's work on Nightcrawler, and it never came.
It was foolish and risky. Gilroy has not got a long enough track record as a director to more or less guarantee great reviews. Criticas aren't attached to him likes he's PTA or Tarantino. Sony just misjudged how to release this. They should have just trusted in Denzel's popularity and thrown it out wide.

As others have pointed out, what the hell are you talking about. There's absolutely nothing "dubious" about Kidman's nomination. She's the friggin favorite to WIN! She's already won the Emmy for that category. You don't seem to have much clue as to what's actually going on
You picked the wrong year to go on a Kidman being nominated by the Globes shaming rant. Big Little Lies is a beloved televison phenomenon, and Kidman has one of the most acclaimed TV performances of the year. The Globes actually could have given her way more nominations (considering her movie acclaim for The Beguiled and The Killing Of A Sacred Deer), but they didn't. So there's no indulgence this year.
I'm not even a Kidman fan, but I think it's a shame she's not in the Oscar conversation for The Beguiled. It's one of the best lead performances of the year. Kidman in the Beguiled, Stewart in Personal Shopper, Florence Pugh in Lady Macbeth were all as good as the nominees, but their films were all too weird or small to be considered by Oscar.
Also, I hate Trump but I am sick of reading about comments she made a year ago. Move on.
Favorite nominations of the day: Michelle Pfeiffer for Best Supporting Actress in TV, Mary J. Blige in Best Supporting Actress in Film, and "Battle of the Sexes" getting two nominations (Best Actress/Actor in Comedy). I hope BOTS can surprise and get some Oscar noms, especially for Best Actress and Best Original Song (I see you Sara Bareilles, I see you).
Why on earth are people expecting Kate Winslet to get a nod for Wonder Wheel? The movie was panned and is tanking with audiences.
Haven’t seen The Sinner, but the cynic in me thinks Jessica Biel was nominated as a way of ensuring JT will be present.
@James - The Sinner actually hasn’t gotten good WOM notices. I was surprised as USA doesn’t scream quality as cable networks go.

I echo the first comment. "Three Billboards" over "Wonderstruck" is such bullshit! And where is Michael Giacchino in all this? It's like he fell off the end of the earth fro awards voters after "Up".
By FAR the most baffling things about these is "Three Billboards" as a Drama. I can't recall too many instances of straight-up comedies being shoved into the Drama category - usually it's the other way around.
Hong Chau deserves an Oscar nomination. A shame about The Big Sick, but it's the Globes who cares.
@Patryk Also, take a look at the response to "The Leisure Seeker" on MetaScore (55/100), Rotten Tomatoes (42%), and IMDb (5.9/10). It's looks like a pretty mediocre non-entity. One critic (London Evening Standard), even slams Mirren's "dodgy accent," so I'm thinking, yeah... just more crazy Mirren infatuation at the Globes.
I echo other commenter's delight that Emma Watson was ignored for BEAUTY AND THE BEAST; she was awful. Her delivery of 'I will never marry you, Gaston!' actually made me laugh out loud.
Mirren endures the same criticism as Streep, in the sense that both are incredibly gifted actresses who frequently star in films unworthy of their talents. I'm sympathetic because I'm just glad they're working, but quite often their nominations seem like a recognition of their status rather than their performance.
Mike in Canada, considering Winslet is also receiving toxic buzz and really mediocre reviews, the HFPA wouldn't risk at the edge of controversy. Personally, i'm glad that dreadful performance didn't make it.

All the Money in the World will certainly be a non-factor in the SAG awards. I'm also wondering about Phantom Thread and The Post. Did they send out screeners? If not, that may be a way for Jake Gyllenhaal to return to the conversation, replacing Daniel Day Lewis and/or Tom Hanks.

Golden Globes suck. It's just a crappy awards show where they nominate bad movies and give awards that are bought by morons. Voted by assholes who don't know shit about film and have the ceremony be in some shit hotel room with tables serving expensive and crap food you know you can get a better quality for much less.
Thevoid99 -- somebody got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Yikes! Hugs from afar. The Globes aren't that bad. Despite the frequent media pile up on them they're really no more dubious than any number of precursor prizes... nearly all of which have some embarrassing or questionable backstory or tactics to get attention. They're just more famous is all. So i guess a bigger target.
Leon -- not doing that yet. There's still a chance with SAG. I am not one of those people who takes every single awards announcement like it's going to repeat at Oscar. These things ebb and flow from prize to prize... but yes he is looking less likely. Which is sad. If they have to dump one or their only three traditional "bait" roles this year why not Gary Oldman instead who is hammier or Tom Hanks who has less to do. I think Gyllenhaal is more deserving than either this year. But then I have been aware of his gift for years and not taking it for granted like Oscar does. (still mortified by the Nightcrawler snub for lesser performances)

I guess I'm dumb because I actually thought Gal Gadot would get nominated. Huge film, good will, new attractive/popular actress. Not saying it's the best performance of the year but she did fine work and it would've been kind of fun to see the movie get nominated for something. Oh well.

The Big Sick, obviously, probably the most thoroughly enjoyable movie I saw this year that wasn't pure popcorn.
Gyllenhaal for Stronger. Hopefully he still gets in at the Oscars. They owe him after the Nightcrawler snub.
Wind River for picture or best actor Jeremy Renner. Guess it was too long ago/not liked enough.
Detroit was gut wrenching. Though I wasn't expecting it to be in the best picture - drama nominees, it is deserving.
Haven't seen Call Me By Your Name Yet but Stuhlbarg is terribly underrated. Haven't seen Leisure Seeker yet either, but thought it could allow for Sutherland to FINALLY get an Oscar nomination.
Also I sit hoping (in vain it seems) for Annette Bening to get her much deserved and delayed Oscar. Haven't had the chance to see Film Stars ... yet, but she lost out last year for 20th Century Women and didn't get nominations she deserved in other years (Running with Scissors, Bugsy) and lost three Oscars she arguably should have won or would have won if not for exceptionally strong competition.
It only seems that the Globes nominate Mirren for everything , but they ignored her last year for Collateral Beauty :-)
In my opinion, as regards the Best Supporting Actor SAG: Plummer will be out, Stuhlbarg will be in.

I'm bummed that The Big Sick was completely overlooked! It's so deserving of love. And Greta Gerwig! What will it take to acknowledge female directors who aren't making war movies? Also I'm annoyed that they passed on Alexis Bledel - she was phenomenel in The Handmaid's Tale.
Oh and I don't know what the reaction to The Sinner has been but I couldm't get past the first episode. It was painfully bad.
