Golden Globe Nominations 2017

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has reached its diamond anniversary. Alfre Woodard and Sharon Stone announced the nominations. Here are the Globe nominations in all their glory and folly (it's always a combo of the two with any awards body... though people tend to be harsher on the Globes in this perception matter). The biggest surprise was the big love for Ridley Scott's All the Money in the World (which no other awards group had screened to date) but the Golden Globes do like to be first as is always evident in their TV nominations which are generally quite favorable to new series (note the love for The Handmaid's Tale, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, and more). As is also their habit they embraced a musical for their comedy/musical category giving a Best Picture nomination to The Greatest Showman.
Among the saddest snubs (discussed in fuller detail here) were Jake Gyllenhaal for Stronger (though sister Maggie was nominated again for her amazing work on The Deuce), Regina Hall for Comedy Actress (somehow they needed Helen Mirren again), and a complete shutout for three high profile Comedies or Musicals: Girls Trip, Beauty and the Beast, and The Big Sick.

These results are as to be expected too. The HFPA rarely pass up the chance to honor a musical in the category so it was either The Greatest Showman or Beauty and the Beast. They opted for the more recent watch (and also the better movie, if you ask me, but I am a known B&B hater -- a stiff awkward gawdy copy of the classic animated feature).
The film that has to be hurting from this lineup is The Big Sick which was tailor-made for this kind of honor and has been campaigning a lot (something the Globes usually respond to) and was somehow passed over. I blame the recency effect of I Tonya and The Disaster Artist.

Three cheers for Emma Stone's best work since Easy A getting at least one awards season honor. What is Helen Mirren doing here for a film no one cares about? Well the HFPA are known Mirren obsessives with 15 nominations and 3 wins over the years. The big conspicuous miss here is Emma Watson (Beauty and the Beast) who seemed right up their alley celebrity-wise but we were rooting for Regina Hall (Girls Trip)

Ansel Elgort is the surprise (though we did predict him for fun) since people like Baby Driver a lot and the only reason it isn't competing for bigger prizes (given the fanfare for it this year) is that it's neither "serious" nor brand new. It'll be interesting to see if Franco takes this with ease or if the Globes (which have known to be surprising with Comedy winners) go in a different direction.

Michelle Williams arrives as a last moment spoiler. Does she deliver in the film or is this just the Globes being their 'we like whatever we just watched!' selves? This lineup is, alas, not good news for Annette Bening in Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool who probably needed it to boost her not opening till the very last second profile.

Where is Jake Gyllenhaal for Stronger? Why did people skip that movie? If you're curious about the lack of public response to Roman Israel Esq though Denzel is usually so bankable, I'd read this review from Pajiba. I haven't yet seen the film but this seems as astute a call as anyone as to why no one seemed to care when the film arrived.

This list is 60% women of color despite the fact that Tiffany Haddish who has been rising in Oscar nomination buzz for Girls Trip missed out. Holly Hunter, long expected to show at the Oscar nominations for The Big Sick, was also pushed out. But then the HFPA clearly didn't respond to The Big Sick. It seems remarkable that Hong Chau, who is not yet a celebrity in the way the Globes prefer, has been able to maintain buzz given the huge downward buzz turn on Downsizing. The movie is far more interesting as a movie that people are prepared to admit for whatever reason. For what it's worth these cold shoulders happen every year. Critics and the public and awards bodies need to be in just the right mood for anything divisive.

Hammer was a shoo-in given the Globes love of glamorous stars but this is still quite a disappointing result for Michael Stuhlbarg who is even better than Hammer in the film (and a true supporting player unlike the film's top billed star). If SAG matches these results Wednesday that's your Oscar lineup. But we think we'll see a bit more variation and thus more suspense for Oscar nomination morning.

No Jordan Peele. No Greta Gerwig. No Dee Rees. No Luca Guadagnino. The Globes rejected their opportunities for diversity here which is not typical for them, all told. They've been kinder to female directors, gay directors, and directors of color than Oscar has over the years (in the past they've nominated Ava DuVernay and Spike Lee and Barbra Streisand and Todd Haynes to name some examples who've never had the parallel Oscar honor.)

Looks like Mariah Carey and Mary J Blige will be at the Globes. It's always been hilarious to us that the Globes Song category is so much more celebrity driven than Oscar's parallel category since the stars don't actually perform at the Globes but they do (sometimes) at the Oscars. This category is not historically very predictive of Oscar so don't assume these are the future Oscar nominees.

All high profile films. The only one we knew would happen was First They Killed My Father since the Globes have been in Angelina Jolie's corner since before she was a global sensation (she had her first win there even prior to her breakout in Gia). Don't be surprised if it wins and Jolie nabs her fourth Golden Globe. All of these films are in the running for Oscar's foreign film prize (which is not always the case as the Globes have different eligibility requirements).

The special screening of All The Money In The World for HFPA seems to have paid off. Supporting actor, actress and director nods.
We probably should've seen Helen Mirren's name coming. They are OBSESSED with her. I am pissed off that Salma Hayek was overlooked for her great performance in Beatriz at Dinner.
It's funny how a week or two ago people were saying The Shape of Water is basically DOA and its awards predictions were highly over exaggerated. Now, it's leading the Globes. And the Critics Choice Awards.
I think Jake Gyllenhaal's window is closing. A miss here is not good, particularly since best actor drama was not a particularly competitive category this year.
The Big Sick was completely snubbed. That's the biggest shock of the morning. That and All the Money in the World getting director, actress, and supporting actor nods. Are we underestimating this?

The HFPA broke big for The Post, The Shape of Water, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. (A huge coup as well for All the Money in the World.)
Get Out feels under-rewarded, while Lady Bird is right down the middle.
The TV side is, happily, quite varied. Guess I'll have to watch The Sinner now.

When I saw the previews for All the Money in the World over the weekend, I was really wowed by Michelle Williams (at least the 30 seconds or so that I saw) and I wondered if the only reason she hadn't shown up yet in the various awards was that the critics hadn't seen her. And with all the kerfluffle over Kevin Spacey, it seemed she'd been under the radar. Looks like my hunch had some substance to it. Wouldn't it be great if she came out of (practically) nowhere to get her long overdue Oscar?
I feel like Hong Chau owes Tiffany Haddish and Holly Hunter a gift basket or something. :-(

Looking at the bright side here... that abominable remake of Beauty and the Beast was rightfully snubbed!!!! And I don't have to call Emma Watson a Golden Globe nominee for completely missing the point of Belle (do all of you realize how probable that was? Especially given that the animated film rightfully won the Globe for Picture-Comedy/Musical)...
if you remember, the Globes weren't crazy about BRIDESMAIDS either... No nom for Melissa McCarthy and she got an Oscar nom... I still have faith in GIRLS TRIP.

Am I the only one bummed out that Stuhlbarg missed for the best performance of the year? It's a very Globes thing to do - go with the younger, prettier co-star - but I'm going to need to see a SAG nod now, please.
Maybe I'm wrong but I always think of the Globes as only semi-legit so I have a hard time taking them *too* seriously. Some kind of weird, offbeat noms in here, esp that item known as The Leisure Seeker.
Universal did not commission a screening of Girls Trip for the Hollywood Foreign Press. It was submitted for eligibility but the HFPA want you to go the extra mile when asking them to consider non-prestige bait.
1 - Get Out only get nominations because was considered Comedy to HFPA. Let's be frank everyone that is true!

This crazy revenge against Woody Allen is hurting her chances.
The Globes made it interesting, as they always do. Not surprised at all they went big for Ridley Scott - they were the first awards body to see the refurbished movie so they get to play kingmaker.
Here's my biggest takeaway - Darkest Hour is no longer a threat to win best picture, and Oldman better win here or it's a Chalamet/Hanks/Franco fight to the finish.
I always kind of assumed that Guadagnino would suffer a similar at as Todd Haynes / Carol, though I still suspect CMBYN to get a Best Picture nomination. I see CMBYN getting 4-5 noms -- Picture, Actor, Supporting Actor, Screenplay and maybe song.
I'm sure the SAG noms this week will balance out the mess that the Globes threw at us. Interesting nonetheless!
Really hoping Jordan Peele can at least make it into Best Director. If the Globes are already leaning on Men, Men, Men, I can't imagine Greta Gerwig breaking through at the Oscars.
People have really been sleeping on Denzel because of his film's tepid reception. I've thought this for awhile, but he's officially the closest thing male actors have to Meryl Streep (within the industry). Some people think it's Daniel Day-Lewis, but his fortunes are tied much closer to how well his film is recieved. If it's not a Best Pic contender, no1curr (like The Boxer or Nine or The Ballad Of Jack And Rose). Like Meryl, Denzel can get in as a lone nod repeatedly. He's not as dependant on the reception of his movie.
His film isn't well reviewed, the box office is tepid, but voters are going to watch Roman J Israel screeners regardless because he's Denzel, and he never sucks. And I think they are going to nominate him for the Oscar because he's Denzel and he's doing something different.
Stuhlbarg gives a good performance, but he wouldn't be a part of the conversation without the monologue/thesis dump Aciman wrote for the character in the novel. To me, he's on par with every supporting actress who's been nominated because they were gifted a "big" scene (Richardson in Damages comes to mind almost immediately). I will say this about him and his performance, though: I wish his take had been Chalamet's with Elio. Stuhlbarg brings this earnest, in-awe quality to some of his line deliveries, as if passion is threatening to consume him at any given moment of any given day.
To me, that's Elio. Anyway, I digress...
My opinion, OBVIOUSLY, so no need to stone me on the streets, but the fever-pitch rose-tinted perspective about certain aspects of CMBYN surely has reached its peak, no?
Also, WTF is The Leisure Seeker?!?!?!

The TV Actress - Comedy category is awesome. All terrific performances.
Having binged The Crown S2 this weekend, Claire Foy's nom again is well-deserved, but VANESSA KIRBY is amaze-balls as Princess Margaret.
Shame about The Big Sick. And Dee Rees missing out on Director category.
I need to process it but there are already some things i need to say :

I thought the HFPA might nominate Daniela Vega at least. I guess her best chance is a long-shot nomination at the Oscar.
I won't begrudge Mirren her nomination since I have not seen her film yet. Should we be pleasantly surprised that the HFPA at least throws a curveball in the nominations list rather than the usual suspects? Or should we celebrate the curveballs only when they are in accord with what we want? I, for one thought Michelle Pfeiffer was quite good in Murder on the Orient Express more than in mother! but nothing from both films here. Or even her closing-credits song in MOTOE. I thought there might be a surprise nomination for Claes Bang, but totally zilch. Or Jamie Bell.
I'm beginning to get worried about CMBYN's chances. No screenplay nod, or director, or Stuhlbarg. I'm already hearing from progressives that they're "bothered" by the fact that one of the two lovers in the film is "under age." The #metoo movement, which I support, may lead to some undeserved casualties--Winslet being another one.
Best Supporting Actress is going to break some hearts. And it will only get murkier if SAG reinstates Hunter and Haddish in the lineup.
Just wait for BAFTA to throw a bone to Scott Thomas, Manville or Walters.

I'm in charge of my parents Netflix queue - mainly because they have never heard of any of these movies or actors, and don't feel it's incumbent upon them to learn. Occasionally, I get e-mails from them asking why they send me weird stuff about self-indulgent millennials with their crude way of talking and their strange sexual habits (they didn't care for any of the scenes with the young people in the club, who they think were just mean to each other, or the "I have to take a shit" thing) when what they really want is movies like the one with Tom Hanks and the airplane...or was it a boat?
My two most recent "failures" were Frances Ha and The Big Sick, Which made me wonder how much Oscar love we'll see for The Big Sick, given that a large chunk of the Academy membership is probably more like my parents than the people I hang out with in Williamsburg.
I felt before today that Holly Hunter was probably in danger. Metcalf, Janney and Blige feel good to go, Spencer is once again in a big movie with a ton of traction, and Chau and Haddish both have fierce partisans. I'll be very sad if Hunter doesn't make the cut, but again, timing, momentum and the limitations of appeal have a way of tipping the balance.

As good as Hammer is in CMBYN , he is a lead in the film. In fact his is the first title card in the opening credits and it's a shame he is being campaigned in supporting.
No nomination for their darling Jlaw, who they'd previously awarded for three miscast roles. Glad to see she's finally getting cancelled!
Holly Hunter is an American treasure, but she doesn't need another nomination for that role in that movie.
Best Actress and Supporting Actress races seems so dull. I expect a change soon.
Where is Kate Winslet or Annette Bening or Diane Kruger?
What about Kristin Scott Thomas or Lesley Manville or Julie Walters?
We need some real actresses in this game.
C'mon
I really do hope Hong Chau makes the cut for the Oscars. I am by no means an Alexander Payne fan (I haven't particularly cared for any of his films other than Election and Citizen Ruth), but it sure figures that the first time in a long time I'm impressed by his work all the awards bodies suddenly go cold on his film. There's a chance that Chau's performance and what it represents in modern society might be flashy enough for her to still get the Oscar nomination, but I'm not holding my breath.
I'm irritated that Gerwig was left out of the Best Director race, especially for Nolan and McDonagh. McDonagh should not be writing and directing films about Americans at all, and Nolan has the most male-centric viewpoint of any prominent director.
Don't catch out Miranda Richardson being thrown a bone at BAFTA, especially as they seem to love Jake Gyllenhaal so much. Remember Made in Dagenham and that year that Melissa Leo wasn't even nominated, and they opted for Richardson, Manville and Hershey?
I could totally see Richardson, Manville, Scott Thomas, or Walters ALL getting in to that category there.

I don't agree with that review for ROMAN J ISRAEL ESQ that you linked to Nat - i actually liked Denzel's performance a lot specifically because it's so different for him; I had gotten so bored of his usual Denzelisms. I think he's the best thing about a Not Good Movie Otherwise. The script has a terrible last act. But I wouldn't be mad at Denzel getting praise for this film because this is the sort of thing we should be encouraging him to do as an actor - he's got more range than he usually lets on. (Then again I thought he was fairly awful in FENCES so what do I know...)
Jason -- i haven't seen the film so i dont agree or disagree with the review. just thought it was an itneresting peak at why people might not have responded to the film (surely Denzel's biggest flop in aeons) because it doesn't deliver any of the Denzel-isms
Chastain, Hawkins, McDormand, and Streep all seemed pretty locked down, so I thought the wild card might go to a foreign actress, which isn't unusual here (I guessed Diane Kruger), but it seems like the ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD screening paid off and it has a nice narrative to go with its nominations.
Really surprised that THE BIG SICK is completely shut out here. I expected it to get Globe nominations in Picture, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actress, and Screenplay. Yikes. I have faith that Hunter will get a big boost once we get SAG nominations, but I'm nervous about the screenplay...

Once again, the Mirren hate goes on (" What is Helen Mirren doing here for a film no one cares about") while the dubious inclusion of Kidman goes unremarked upon,. Maybe (Kidman)will win and make a pro-Trump speech babbling on how we all need to support our idiot-in -chief. Perhaps when Kidman is over 70 and still receiving GG nods, (She has 12 to Mirren's 15). someone will be outraged and annoyed. And since when does attention for ''a film no one cares about." become a critical objective to be mentioned? Where would so many little seen masterpieces be without early awards attention? I expect the Dench assault to launch momentarily...
