This Big Little Lies thing is a scandal. Reese and Nicole need to (and will) be called to answer for this. The disrespect for Andrea Arnold (and the underlying message it sends to all female filmmakers) is... breathtaking. A clusterfuck big enough to swallow Reese's new venture whole.

I feel bad for Andrea Arnold. It makes me think that Reese and Nicole are not as powerful as one may think. Ultimately, like always, it's the men in suits who are in charge.
it's a little strange that there isn't one person on record speaking in the IndieWire article about Big Little Lies. The writer only talks about "sources close to" all the players. I'm not claiming it's not true, but I wouldn't call that article thorough journalism.

I have stopped to follow all the BLL cast on social media. Part of me say that the "white feminism" is more important to them that "feminism in general". Two of the leading cast are producers and the responsible for airing the first season (Reese and Nicole). We have three female Oscar winners in the cast plus one nominee (Laura), direct by an academy award winner director (Andrea). None of the Oscar lady's come to defend Mrs Arnold? Why? Why everyone is silence about that?
I am really sorry but this group of actress decline on my list of favorite artists today.
I agree with Faye. Reese and Nicole are probably not as powerful as people think. This series needs them, but they need the series as well.
David E. Kelley and Jean Marc Vallee really need to answer for this. David E. Kelley's shows of the '90s were incredibly problematic for women, and as I've said almost every week in the comments, the writing has been the worst this series from the get-go. (It deservedly lost the writing Emmy to Black Mirror: San Junipero - the only top-line Emmy it lost.) And this is the only Vallee project I've ever liked... I credit the actresses, not the director or writer.
Jenifer, you clearly don’t understand how it works if you think the women, particularly the ones who aren’t even producers, could’ve convinced men much more powerful than them otherwise. Also, HBO responded saying Arnold was told she wouldn’t have final cut. You can’t be a feminist and make such accusations with absolutely nothing out there to substantiate them.

An awful lot of people seem to be taking this one anonymous source as fact and then jumping to quite a few conclusions. This is a lot of outrage over the the likeliness that creators of a show just decided they wanted the second season to be more stylistically in sync with the first... I doubt things are as simple as this Andrea Arnold is a victim of mean men narrative suggests, but go off I guess
Kate, there are multiple anonymous sources quoted in the article, not one, and it's obvious why no one with less power than Vallee or Kelley would want to be quoted on the record in the piece. Moreover, the events described in the article have been rumored for months if you follow reputable entertainment journalists like Kris Tapley on twitter, and they explain many questions we fans have had about the season (e.g., the shorter episodes; highly anticipated scenes getting cut; odd editing choices; heck, even Joanna Robinson pointed out yesterday that no one has been able to interview Arnold about the season). Yes, it could all be false, but if it is, it would be an enormous scandal that would be a huge chink in indiewire's armor as a source of entertainment news. Indiewire is not ontd.
Gus Kenworthy is definitely channeling Jon-Erik Hexum.
This seems very meta with Andrea and the themes of the show. Please give her credit for amazing work with actors. Mike Nichols would be proud of her. BLL2 is the zeitgeist moment.

There is not doubt that Holland and Gyllenhal have good chemistry but of course nobody has sex in a Marvel movie so the film was not going there. The only reason "The Lion King" was remade was to make money. Disney is greedy- why replace perfect animation with CGI critters. It made sense in "The Jungle Book" because it was different than the original cartoon. Jack Raynor should be a bigger star

I mean, I think that was always obvious but it made very good awards/publicity narrative sense to make it seem like they did. But I'm also very cynical, so I naturally just assumed...
The thing is, I still think the second season is really good and Arnold should still be proud she got these performances with a storyline that has genuine pathos and power to it (which is more than can be said for a lot of TV that win endless breathless praise). There definitely seems to have been a bad case of bad communication about Arnold's role if they just wanted to reshape it into what they already knew would work (but then that also feels like TV more broadly).
